Is that so? When has KyoAni used Kyou no hi wa Sayonara in their work? I'm not recalling it at least. |

No, I didn't mean that they were both used in K-On, just that they were both Japanese folks' songs Anno decided to use in the movie. Kyou no Hi wa Sayonara has, as far as I know, never appeared in any KyoAni-series. |

ah finally got around to watching this, a good movie to say the least, top quality animation and great music, a bit slow on the first half but definitely picked up later on. A very high 8/10 which I'll round to 9/10 for now, I prob wont say I liked it more than the first movie but I'd say I enjoyed them both about the same. Now then movie 3 f'cking when? |

Vegard_Aune said: That song isn't from K-On. It's a Japanese folk's song from the 70s, and it just so happens that both Anno and KyoAni decided to use it in their anime. Incidentally, this is also the case with the other insert song they used when Unit 01 destroyed Unit 03. It's also the case for the song Mari is singing at the beginning of the movie. |

It could be another two year wait for all we know. To think all four Rebuild movies were originally supposed to be completed and released by 2008, haha. |

Loved the use of music in this movie, especially where it was used to juxtapose some of the fighting scenes. The climax of this movie was great! Shinji manned up considerably compared to the original series. Tsubasa wo Kudasai was an excellent choice as the OST when he rescued Rei. Also, ending made me rage. Kaworu never fails to piss me off. |

LagannBuster said: Needs more BLU-REI! Hahaha yeah. I agree. Kind of late to the party since i waited for my Blu-Rei version but here goes. Anyway i have to say am not sure what to say. On one side this movie was thrilling and exciting, as just a movie it would be an awesome movie but as a part of the Evangelion franchise these whole remake leaves me with a sense of small disappointment. Why is that? Because i loved the first Evangelion for very solid reasons. Not for the mecha action or the girls but for that psychological feeling. That depressive mood the sense of desperation, confusion those feelings that confused you inside making you wanting to hit your head on the wall or not leave your home for the next few days. That feeling unfortunately seems diminished. It's seems like Evangelion is starting to become a high quality action fanservise series for the more relaxed modern fans instead of trying to be what made Evangelion so special. Rei is not a confused mystery doll anymore that tries to find her humanity but more like the nice girl next door. Asuka is a lot more relaxed and honest instead of baring the heavy burden in her soul. Shinji isn't as depressed and hopeless as he was. Yeah many hated his way but i liked that he wasn't another guy "believing" he can do it like all the other lame anime. Yes he was a pussy, emo, faggot and he was perfect because he was human and a teenage boy with a huge burden. And people hated him but he still fought. And his father. Oh my god he actually tries to be a little fatherly and doesn't look like a complete asshole. What is this? Where is my Evangelion? Why have i watched a 2 hour Evangelion movie and don't feel like cutting my veins but instead am happy hearing Misato promising me more harem fanservise with a cute voice in the end and remembering the cool special effects? Of course this is still only the second movie so i can't say its a full picture but i got these kind of feel. Hell in this Evangelion i can't even imagine scenes likes Rei's monologue fitting with the spirit of the series or Asuka looking like a dead corpse in that destroyed building's bathtub. And don't get me started with Marin. What does a confided American girl that likes to fight doing in my Evangelion. This ain't a fucking shounen. We don't need stable personalities here. You may be crazy but you don't seem fucked up enough to belong here. There is enough awesomeness and high production values to make me give this movie a 9 but there isn't enough of that special Evangelion feeling that makes something score a perfect ten. Sorry but i get the feeling that they tried to make all the simple minded that didn't find Evangelion to be TTGL enough to give it a good score and push a little away all the guys like me who appreciated its weirdness. When i see people saying that Rei and Asuka look more like girls now and that Shinji and his father are less fagots and that's why they like it better, i know that this is exactly why i don't like it better. |

Well that was...interesting. I must say I'm grateful that this rebuild hasn't simply re-made the original story with better animation but some of the changes were strange to me at first. The visuals and sound were simply stunning and majestic at times so that was perfect. The addition of a new character could have been a jumping the shark moment but I must say it worked out surprisingly well. Asuka being inside the EVA which became an Angel instead of Touji set it up so Makinami could take over as pilot of Unit-02 which was an interesting difference. The best anime film to accompany a series ever? Quite possibly I think. 9/10 |

Gawd, this movie was amazing. Exceeded my expectations, and is less depressing than the original series. I like the new personalities. That's how the anime should have been. But then again, Anno was depressed back when he made it. Other than that, loved the ending song, and the preview at the end definitely lightened up the mood. |

The overall mood might have been lighter, but I see no problem there. After all, this IS a rewrite. Not to mention the caotic nature of the last events (every fucking thing was ruined in a matter of minutes, what else do you want?). Really, the post-apocalyptic feeling was intact, what changed was the way to do it — which is welcome, since this is, again, a rewrite. I understand the arguments of, for instance, Monad in the post above. But for starters, you can't transfer the original show's essence into such a "short" movie, and at the same time try to inovate and focus on the plot. Shinji didn't seem so emo simply because there was no time to show his slow but notable progress — and the same applies to Rei. About Asuka, the only moment in which she was more open was in her supposed final moments. Although she did seem less annoying to me. And last thing, specifically about this line: Sorry but i get the feeling that they tried to make all the simple minded that didn't find Evangelion to be TTGL enough to give it a good score and push a little away all the guys like me who appreciated its weirdness. I really don't like to talk about Evangelion with my friends exactly because they think that all fans have the same reasoning: "we are too sophisticated and you don't appreciate it because you are a monkey who likes TTGL". It's like boringness was the most absolute value in the world. If that was the case, Evangelion itself wouldn't have any Evas, Angels or awesome battles and intriguing misteries at all. |

I get your argument and truthfully when you have 26 episodes you have more time to built a character but i still get the feeling that they could have done a better job. I have seen series with only 12 or only 6 episodes building a full profile of a character very well. You say you see no problem with the mood changing a little or being more lite. But you see here is the problem. THIS IS EVANGELION! Why is this a problem? Is a known fact that Evangelion was kind of a phenomenon and accumulated many followers. So what is it that all those people found in it? Yeas you guess right. Exactly what this lighter more action oriented movies have diminished. That exact strange heavy atmosphere is what made it what it is. That was the essence of Evangelion. Is like you are removing the most basic element. Is like trying to make a different chicken soup but remove the chicken. The one ingredient that should not be removed because well... it's not chicken soup anymore, is it? Tomah said: And last thing, specifically about this line: Sorry but i get the feeling that they tried to make all the simple minded that didn't find Evangelion to be TTGL enough to give it a good score and push a little away all the guys like me who appreciated its weirdness. Hey i don't have a problem with action shows and all that. They can be awesome. But i just don't see why Evangelion who has it's own spirit has to be turned into one because for you and others it's boringness. I don't think you are an idiot or a monkey if you liked TTGL. Hey i liked it too, just not enough to call it a masterpiece but the "simple minded" comment comes exactly in what you describe as boringness. It's like you decided that other elements are not worthy enough because they just aren't things getting blown-up. It's just something you can't feel, it's not boring at all. It's just not for you. Just because it was something different from what you usually watch, you just decided is boringness instead of trying to feel what is about. You could still say i didn't like the feeling it has so i don't like it but claiming that it's just boring it only shows you just wanted to see more battles and got bored without even trying to feel the show. In the end, you are doing the same you accuse your friends for. While they basically call you brainless just because you like TTGL, You also to the same by calling there thing boring. You are as much of a snob as they are. |

I see it the exact opposite of you, Monad. This is not Evangelion, this is Rebuild. People need to be more open to the fact that this is a reimagining, not a remake. The characters should be expected to change along with the plot. One of the stated intentions for creating the Rebuild tetralogy was 'for it to be more accessible to non-fans than the original TV series and films were', so yes they have departed from the original fans in a way, but there were enough easter eggs and typical Eva-esque themes in there to bring us right back. The film caters for both sides, and quite masterfully so might I add. As for your chicken soup comment, if the reception alone says anything, it's that you are one of the minority. You yourself gave the film a nine, while you gave the first Rebuild installment (which was very similar to the series) an eight, so you really can't be that disappointed with the changes. Also, since when was Rebuild turning into an action show? Have you not been paying attention to the story? The mystery in the tetralogy so far is as prominent as it was in the series. Key of Nebuchadnezzar - what? This time... I will definitely make you happy - come again? Plus as I mentioned before, there are enough easter eggs and typical Eva-esque themes in the movie to keep long time fans happy. Just take a look at this. Can you see it? Do you see Rei? Some almighty fellow even found a hidden message in the automated voice from the Dummy System. Just take a glance at the forums on EvaGeeks and you'll see that Rebuild is keeping the fans just as involved as they were in the series, and not through action but through the usual means of references and hidden messages which Evangelion is so good at. I suggest you take a look at the poster for 3.0 as well, one wouldn't be absurd to assume psychological aspects may be present in the next installment. By no means is Eva discarding its roots and becoming another generic action show - it still, entirely, has it's own spirit. |

I personally like EVA for the crazy humanoid robot action and that didn't disappoint. I didn't like the song name "Today is the Time for Goodbye", I get that they were trying to mix pleasant and unpleasant, but maybe get someone else to sing it. The characters interactions feel so fake to me unlike the TV series that actually made me care, maybe I talking too soon I have high expectations for the next movie. 7/10 4GB's of enjoyment. |

The best of Evangelion. I love rebuild, it gives me the ability to connect to the characters, not only new ones such as Mari but Asuka has also become a favourable character. Shinji is also slowly growing up in comparison of Rebuild of Evangelion 1.1, he is able to feel a link between various characters and other pilots =] Action is also great, willing to say Jaw Dropping standard and plot line is Immense. 5/5 Not just for beating Rebuild of Evangelion 1.1 but truly becoming the masterpiece that is Evangelion |

*Waves to fellow Evageeks I recognize in here* I LOVED this movie and I cannot wait for Q and Final. Studio Kara seems to know what they're doing. For people wondering when Q will be out, going by the release schedule for the films, I'd say that trailers should start appearing late Summer/Fall and the actual film would be out Spring/Summer 2011. But who knows with Kara. >_> I had a very, very, minor issue with the pacing (mainly WHEN exactly did Operation Yashima happen, considering even NGE had a shot of Ramiel clean-up in one or two episodes) and I felt Asuka could have been fleshed out a little bit more, but this still gets a 10/10 from me. (Mari is supposed to be mysterious or at the very least, she's SUPPOSED to feel like a character from another anime, according to Sadamoto, so I'm not too concerned about that.) I can understand where people are coming from with having issues with Asuka or Rei or the pacing, but hopefully Q or Final can rectify things where it'd make "more sense" once you'd go back and watch 2.22 when all the films are complete. It's hard for me personally to say if New Movie Edition is how Eva should be, I'd really need to see all the films before making such a comparison of NGE/EOE versus the new films. ;) |

Finally got around to watching this! It was incredible, any doubts I had about the Rebuild series were completely washed away as I was watching. Hideaki Anno, how could I have ever doubted you ;_; I do like Mari, I can't wait to find out more about her! Especially about how she was able to pilot EVA 02 and access 'beast mode'. There has to be something special going on there, right? Asuka was always my favorite and the character I related to most, I was happy to see they did her justice while making her a bit more upfront with her kindness. Shinji was just great, I never really disliked him in the original series but in this one he's just that much better! The animation was just flawless, the soundtrack was beautiful. I loved the updated EVA designs, too! Can't wait to get figures of some of these Anyway, I am dyyying for 3.0 |

it isn't evangelion. from Liberal's review: Part of what made Evangelion Evangelion, or at least different and refreshing, was that for once the archetypal young mecha pilot wasn’t so archetypal anymore. Contrary to most of the popular mecha heroes before him, Shinji didn’t just get over things and his shitty reality in general in the blink of an eye. Au contraire, Shinji pretty much represented the revolution of the individual who’s been alienated, disoriented and estranged by society. The awakening to the fact that something’s wrong with the way people are taught to just “get over it”. Thus proposing the idea that the very society that’s supposed to integrate us together is the one dividing us in the first place. Which brings us to our problem: nothing of the sort is ever even implied or suggested if Shinji simply grows up and gets on with his life. Turning him into a positive character with a typical "growing up” character arc just makes him utterly generic and cliche and completely destroys what made Evangelion unique. Which is why 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance just makes me feel cheated. It’s like they’re telling us the conflicts represented in the TV series somehow aren't relevant to humanity anymore. Like we've managed to tread over those meager hurdles or something |

Shinji still has A LOT of new problems that sprang up in the course of the film, a major one being his fault, so I'm not sure what that reviewer means by "Shinji, like other mecha leads, got over his problems in the blink of an eye." There was the tragedy of Asuka Shikinami in Eva-03--Shinji left Nerv because of the guilt regarding what happened to Asuka as well as anger towards Gendo--then when Shinji decided to pilot again, in order to save Rei, he and Eva-01/Yui nearly caused 3rd Impact, only Kaworu's intervention stops that. Nerv's on lockdown in Q because of him, and Hakone was nearly destoryed the almost-3I occurring. It wouldn't surprise me if at least one person if not several higher-ups from Nerv blame him for that once he (and Rei?) leave Eva, considering the world almost ended and all. Anyway, here's a thread from a convention (SMASH) where Yuko Miyamura answered some questions. It has some interesting details in it, though I wouldn't put it past Anno/Kara to be BSing us with a few things here and there. :P http://forum.evageeks.org/viewtopic.php?t=9635 |

Yes, Shinji has a lot of (new) problems, like all other shounen boys, but it isn't the one in the series - the one that was asking existential questions, the one that was looking for the very meaning of life. Now, in Evangelion 2.22 our grown up punk Shinji tries to save Rei, and even uses the cliche word 'taskete/ save' like other shounen boys such as Ichigo of Bleach, Naruto, Luffy of One Piece. In this very moment Shinji gets over his problem in a blink of an eye - once depressed Hideaki doesn't touch the original question of the series. Or take Asuka, her conversation with Misato, when she was wearing her new suit (fan service moments); for the Asuka of the series, it was impossible to get over her complicated personality disorder with just people/friends around her. All in all, Evangelion 2.22 is an excellent movie, one of the best, but it is structurally so different from the original series that it cannot even be called rebuilding. |

I think some viewers are looking at the movie from the wrong angle. You need to stop painfully comparing Rebuild to the original series, because Anno has made it clear that he is going in a completely different direction. I don't understand people who criticize the movie on the basis that it doesn't include some aspects from the series, because it isn't supposed to. The series is the series. Rebuild is Rebuild. This is a reimagining, not a remake. In my opinion the series is perfect as it is and does not need tampering with in any way whatsoever, so rehashing the same story in Rebuild would serve rather pointless. I believe we're getting a lot more out of Rebuild because of the changes and thankfully I am far from alone. Some people need to go in with more of an open mind and we all need to remember that half of the tetralogy still hasn't seen the light of day. There is no telling what might still happen in the Evangelion universe. |

Sure, I don't have a gripe with it being different to the original series, I have a gripe with that they did not change it to make it better but actually worse. I got an open mind enough to accept something different and new but that doesn't mean that everything new is as good as or even better than the original. And this is also the problem with this movie: Different? Yes. Better than the original? Hell no! Ah, it's really a pity. The first movie got me so excited, and now this was such a let down... I'm disappointed. By the way... What's with the awful shitty and unfitting soundtracks when EVA 01 was fighting against the last two angels? If the movie had any good scenes that was them but they were ruined by the soundtrack... Also I hated this Gurren Lagann kind of moments this movie had. They really have no place in the world of Evangelion. Changes are nice but keep them in spirit with the original, please. Don't take a seinen and make a shoujo out of it, for example.... |

I mean, End of Evangelion is practically defined by the Komm Suser Todd-sequence. And I, for one, thought the inclusion of Tsubasa wo Kudasai at the end here was brilliant, due to how the scene itself was simultaneously horrifying and beautiful, and because of this, the music managed to both feel completely out-of-place and perfectly fitting at the same time. |

Re-watch edit: What an execution. Brilliant! The animation was top-notch along with the revamped story: easily 10/10. Continuing from 1.11, this movie outdid the prequel flawlessly in terms of animation and character building. (Felt a lot more like humans) Asuka's tsun-personality has been improved which makes her much more betterfunny somehow. New character is interesting, >dat beast mod thoughaAdding Shinji beast mode too, thx Anno TT--TT and finally the 5th child (yaoi.exe start) |

I can't pick my jaw up after watching this. It's kind of sad, seeing how I'm going to become very cynical towards more forgettable anime now. I was blown away. Especially since 1.0 just felt like a rehash, and now this feels like a totally different route, a la a VN. I didn't think I could love the NGE franchise more, but my eyes have been opened. If this isn't the best I've seen, it's definitely one of the best. I don't really have anything bad to say about it. |

So I've watched it. Not once, not twice... Hell, 2.22 made more replays on my computer than End of Eva. Because this was a lot more entertaining than 1.0, so many twists, so much action, drama, comedy, SERVICE, two brass balls and a spine. As much as I've enjoyed 2.22, honestly I love both versions of the saga, so I have to treat them as separate continuities, rather than comparing their merits. |

I just watched this earlier, and as a fan of the original NGE for a long, long time, I can say that this movie was a masterpiece, it sits up with the original and it does the series justice. I feel like I can sympathize with Asuka's new character more, and her relationship with Shinji is alot better this time around. Rei's character is definitely awesome, she's alot more open and direct. The art was amazing, the music was amazing, hell.... this whole movie surpasses amazing. |

I thought 1.0 was good, and then this just blew me away. Fully agreed with Dcmac12--this movie matches the TV series, and even surpasses it in a number of areas. This time, Anno chose to emphasize character a lot more. Without a doubt, Asuka's and Rei's relationships with Shinji are significantly more fleshed out this time around. Asuka has more of a balance of cold/hot, while Rei has managed to become more expressive. Of course, by building everything up higher, Anno also ensures that the fall will be all the more devastating. And what better way to ensure that than putting Asuka inside Eva-03. Great set-up, great tear down. The final battle has also been re-imagined more intensely--fantastic animation and audio, and on top of that I definitely wasn't expecting the Angel to just eat Rei, and THEN have Shinji pull her out. He sure is looked a lot like a shounen hero in that sequence ^__^ (not that it's a bad thing). Not to mention, Tsubasa wo Kudasai was a pretty nice touch. It's unfortunate though that the movie doesn't give a truly satisfying conclusion :( In the end, amazing doesn't even begin to describe how this movie was put together. 10-ish episodes worth of content packed into 2 hours, and it doesn't even feel rushed in the slightest. Perfect pacing, characters are developed really nicely, and everything falls into place exactly as they should to produce a masterpiece. This movie definitely deserves its stellar score. |
