Well, you could pretty much figure out what the problem was but that didn't prevent this episode from being very enjoyable.

Tough choice but Hanekawa in her cat form is damn cheating. Senjougahara can't touch that.

I am eagerly awaiting to find out what happens next. HOW LONG IS THAT GOING TO TAKE?!

What I meant was that the dialogues lack 'essence and emotions', most if it sounds like it's being read line by line from a piece of paper without any feeling put into it.
The most outstanding thing about this anime, for me is atmosphere. The dialogue in particular is detached and often erratic, but this is actually what distinguishes Bakemonogatari, along with the original art.
I can see how not everybody may like this particular mood created by the show, but i for one am what you call 'enthralled by this show'.

I think the real issue is that you simply don't get this show. I'm sure if I was unable to pick up on the undertones in the dialogue, understand the art direction, or realize the focus of the show, I wouldn't enjoy it either. This isn't some KyoAni romance, it's a bit more complicated than that.

Okay, I don't understand this.

This is the second back-hand I've seen given to KyoAni lately. Didn't they produce Haruhi?

Why use them as the bland and linear romance producer? Just wondering.

On Topic: God, Cat-Hanekawa is... lust incarnate. Cute, sexy, everything. I almost died during that tongue twister part. At the same time, she's not an idiot, either (despite what Araragi thinks). I think this episode perhaps best illustrates the flaw in Araragi's outlook, his "I'm going to save everyone" way of thinking. This outlook effectively makes everyone equal for him, and refuses to acknowledge that they have different roles in his life. He can't save everyone. He can't treat everyone as an equal priority. He started to see that with Nadeko, but this thing with Hanekawa is what's really going to force a change in him.

Edit 2: "I don't meow everything, I just happen to meow this." - I lawled.

Well put. There have been some riveting performances so far in this series. It is wonderful to see Hanekawa step up to the plate and hit one out of the park, for her arc. I wonder if she had to audition for these lines when she was selected for the role.

I wasn't trying to say KyoAni shows are bad. I love everything I've seen by them. However, this is very different from a KyoAni show. You can't treat them the same. KyoAni's shows tend to be much simpler in terms of what's going on. That's not a bad thing by any means. By having one, straightforward problem/situation at a time, it allows for a much more focused look at that problem/situation (e.g. in Clannad, it's one character at a time, but each character and their problem is brought out very well).

With Bakemonogatari, it's a bit more complicated. We've got a new problem each arch, but at the same time, no problem/issue is ever dropped. Each new problem affects and is affected by everything that's been produced before it. This arc isn't just about helping Hanekawa with her stress or her confession. It's going to deal with Araragi maturing and changing the way he looks at and treats other, his relationship with Senjougahara, the way he approaches and treats oddities, etc. Ultimately, it will involve his relationship with everything and everyone in this show.

The result of such an approach is much more complicated interactions and implications. A conversation between Cat-Hanekawa and Araragi isn't just about him and Hanekawa, it reaches out and touches on all the aforementioned issues. The way Araragi handles this issue doesn't affect only him and Hanekawa, but Senjougahara, all the girls he's helped, and the oddities as well.

Thus, whereas a KyoAni anime can be likened to chain were you move from one link to the next, focusing specifically on the emotions and characters of that situation, Bakemonogatari is more like a rope where everything stays intertwined from the start to finish. You might not get to know every character as well through the approach Bakemonogatari uses, but the entire situation will be flushed out much more.

Evaluating them with the same standards simply doesn't work. I felt like EternalDreamer was doing that, as her requirements seemed like something taken right from a KyoAni show.

@EternalDreamer: When I say evidence, I mean cite individual scenes, or pieces of dialogue to explain how dialogue can be "linear" or "emotionless." Such accusations don't mean anything if you don't cite examples to prove your point.

I didn't bluntly disagree with you; I bluntly challenged you to explain how dialogue could be anything BUT linear. It goes one way. You don't redo it. All dialogue is linear.

"Well if that's the case they definitely go at it with the wrong approach, seeing all main characters are girls (Araragi, Meme aside), have a supernatural problem that needs solving, and have a slight crush on Araragi. Plus in my opinion if the show is about character development there are too many of them and to stretched of a focus."

See, this proves my point. You don't understand the show. See above. This show isn't about *focus on one girl* *show her issue* *give her a lot of depth* *move on to the next.* This isn't Kanon or Clannad (note that I'm not saying that approach is bad, it simply isn't being used here). This is building up a web, where each character is related. The relationships between the characters, specifically, the relationships between Araragi and the characters, are far more important than the individual characters themselves (note the use of plural when I said it was "all about the characters"). You're only looking at the half of the show you're accustomed to seeing. You're looking at the side characters, and ignoring the main one. Again, check out my reply to Mockman to see what I'm talking about.

If the girls and their issues were the only thing in this show, I'd agree that it isn't as awesome as people say it is. But you're ignoring half the show, and there's no way you can expect to find it amazing if you can't see that half.

Okay. I agree with you. I just wasn't able to connect that to KyoAni. I don't think Haruhi is a simple linked story. It's more of a knot, turning back on itself.

Having said all that, the use of the other characters in this episode (Kanbaru, Mayoi, Sengoku) sort of does feel linear. I can really only justify their appearances (from a story perspective) as contrasts to Senjougahara. Her refusal to help needs to stand out starkly. Otherwise, they didn't need to be here.

True. The cat form is powerfull. Why would anyone want her to go back to normal is beyond me. Cat full the way.

But remember, when Hanekawa's stress goes away, she will revert to the form of Mistress.

By the way, normal Hanekawa is pretty hot too. She looked good in the pajamas too -- I think that's why the cat continues to wear them, because she knows that she'd made an impression on Araragi. She even hugs him the same way on his bicycle, except with intent.

Also, I love the image of her in the OP from the first episode, standing next to the post with her eyes glowing.

I've had these wistful feelings about Hanekawa ever since ep.04, in the scene at the park. Some time after clonking Mayoi on the head, Araragi and her are talking and he tells her that she must have misunderstood how things are between him and Senjougahara. It becomes clear to her that he understands neither Senjougahara nor her.

Tsundere = moe. Moe things are sexy. Senjougahara is servicing Araragi with her intentional tsundereness, trying to make him horny or happy or something. The deadpan delivery (she sounded like she was reading a textbook) made it all questionable though, which is why Araragi didn't appreciate it. Not to mention the fact she called it tsundere service. It's not hot if it's intentional.

First tsundere isn't necessary always moe. Senjougahara isn't exactly what you call typically moe.Second you are wrong about the whole thing.
Araragi very much appreciated it because it was her way of telling him that she cares about him and wants him to come back safe because she loves him.
But being the tsundere she is, saying "i love you please come safe back to me because i can't live with out you" isn't exactly her style and since she is also a person with a sharp tongue that throws obvious truths that normally people avoid (like describing her self as a tsundere), she just described her next words as tsundere service so she can use them to tell him how she cared in her tsundere way and letting him know exactly that is just her tsundere talk at the same time so he can read between the lines of her tsundere words. Something that he obviously did by his smile after he close the phone and the way he looked at the screen that had the "love Hitagi" on.

@Monad: I was describing tsundere service, not their conversation. Obviously Senjougahara wasn't trying to be moe and obviously Araragi didn't think she was trying to tsundere service him. Deadpan delivery and no "moe-reaction" from Araragi are proof enough of that.

And yes, real tsundere is always moe, imho. This simply wasn't tsundere.

Even after such a long wait, I think the episode was worth it.

I'm of the opinnion that the animation and art in this episode were good, especially the 3D renditioning of the backgrounds. The criticism about the lack of colors seems intriguing to me considering night time tends use a lot of black and thus it was supposed to be dark and simplistic, highlighted from time to time with sharp yellows and white contrast. I'm enjoying the artistic approach. Even those dam flash frames give the show a certain feeling of anxiety.

After this episode I'm a little sad that there is only one left, because it seems like the show still has some plot elements that could be developed further, particularly Araragi and Senjōgahara's masochistic relationship and the romantic elements which bonded them together. Of course the last episode of the original season, Tsubasa the cat part two, was brilliant and I'm thinking that episode 15, Tsubasa the cat Part 5, is going to need to pull off a miracle to achieve the beauty and simplicity that episode 12 did. It seems like there is a lot of lose plot holes to tie up in one episode and the character development that had begun in episode 12 with Senjōgahara's father no longer has any space to continue to add depth to her character or even to begin in some character development of Araragi. Of course with the pace that this show is going they seem to have some time to come up with a great ending, it would not surprise me if they pull it off.

It certainly wasn't any mystery that Tsubasa liked Araragi, but man how is he going to get out of this trap? Either face the wrath of the cat or Senjōgahara.

I haven't watched any of the Blu-ray rips yet, I'm curious to see if any of the supposed missing frames where put in. I guess I'll check it out when it's finished. I'd say I can't wait until the next episode comes out, but well that is exactly what we all have to do. Wait.... In comparison with the release schedule of the Gundam UC, this show is moving at lightning speed. If people like Frederik L. Schodt are right and Anime popularity is well into it's decline in Japan, then these release schedules will only become longer as the once abundant production money pit dries up. Lets hope this means that only quality programming will survive. Patients my friends will have to remain a virtue.

So I haven't seen any commentary on Shinobu, the supposed catalyst for the episode.

One of the things that I noticed throughout the series was that Araragi always referred to her as being nothing, or a nothing being.

Was it to deal with this that she, as Oshino put it, 'left to go find herself'?

This was an okay episode. While Hanekawa is obviously an important character in her own arc, the focus on her is less than I thought it'd be. I think the focus that she is getting is entertaining but I find myself more interested in seeing what happens in regards to the situation with Shinobu.

Its been so long. To be honest, I felt a little confused during parts of this episode, which may be because its been so long since the last time I watched, or the fact that I am currently very tired :) I'll have to watch it again when I wake up, or perhaps re-watch some of the earlier episodes.

Its good to have it back though. Looks like Araragi is in a bit of a bind....
