@Lain2357 As far as I've been told that just has a bad ending, so that's a separate category.
@JaniSIr It's a bad ending that overnight, invalidated the gushing reviews and thinkpieces about how much care and attention it pays towards serious mental health issues. Basically the Game of Thrones effect.

@cavard I don't think 24 episodes of content is in the spirit of bait, that takes commitment to make.
Especially since season 2 wasn't even made by the same studio.

With that logic Attack on Titan would qualify, because season 4 sucked but that's really just a case of the author running out of talent, with a pinch of animation downgrade after studio change.
(Funnily enough both of these went from Wit to MAPPA.)
@JaniSIr oh yea, your first point is valid, but what are you talking about with your second point lol?
the anime adapted the manga basically one-to-one (both vs and aot). i cant see how a studio change would matter in that regard

Takt Op Destiny, Its opener was beautiful and the plot hooked me in. Later to then witness the trash of the last few episodes because the whole show was an advertisement for a trashy upcoming mobile game.

I would say "ONE PIECE"
I thought it was some pirate anime with "fun adventure" but I was wrong ... It is about hidden power in the world, genocide,
Fascism, dictatorship, dark side of government, betrayal , history and so many things

I'm glad it's a bait and switch

@cavard it doesn't matter for the story, but overall it does pull down AoT a lot.

Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO
They took a whole cour to shove us an effing isekai.

Edit: Oh, yes, how to forget Takt Drop Destiny. I'm a big fan of classical music, but that glorified ad for a mobile game was disgusting.

@chaosflame5 I love C3 but yes the Anime' is WAY too short. I wanted to explore that World in much greater detail.
@Sheol01 Same here. Pity that a lot of anime shows ended up to be long ads for the manga/light novels. Sometimes things are better off being an anime than just words or black & white pics with speech bubbles.

These aren't what I consider as absolutely "horrible" shows, but works that were on the top of my head:

Spy Classroom - a series ostensibly about espionage ends up being a mixed bag of a show featuring incompetent spies who were recruited due to each of them having 1 "special ability".

Koi to Uso - set in an alt history Japan where arranged marriages are the norm, only for the show to utterly waste its interesting setting with a generic romance story that can take place in our world with virtually no difference.

It isn't a series, but Inu-Ou. The unconventional musical and dances styles being more modern than I expected might be on me since I didn't pay enough attention, but putting the friendship and fight against tradition plots almost off-screen to use most of the screen time on back to back full performances (that were mostly separated unlike the bait suggested) on the second half is a proper bait and switch. They didn't even performe together most of the time. And I love musicals, but Inu-Ou wasn't like musical films that advance the plot through the performances nor like those that stack a lot of performances on the end to tie the knots and end on a high after using the rest of the film to prep everything.

@GamerM602 much of the yuri bait is people just shipping characters who are just friends, and a neutral observer would never think of yuri.

@Enigma2025 Yeah, I read pretty far ahead in the Manga & it's like the author didn't know what to do with the Romance at all.

Nothing as heavy really. Closest one is Kanojo mo Kanojo. Low budget hitting op, ed and most scenes actually after episode 1. But the standard was already low enough to me.

Kanojo Okarishimasu. Just because the protag becomes such a wimp, worse and worse every episode passing.

@Eldinis Rent-A-Girlfriend is absolutely not a bait and switch, the protagonist was absolutely pathetic in the first and every consequent episodes too!

@JaniSIr I mean.. they usually start weak and improve in that case. Staying pathetic for so long -over multiple seasons- is totally bait to me. He actually managed to have a relation before episode 1.

Probably The Girl Who Leapt Through Time for me, I was expecting a time travel story with some drama whereas what I get is some teenage girl's romance and her stupid actions.

Medaka Box as well but manga only dropped it when it turned into battle shounen.

I heard that it has really bad plot progression because it always go back to the status quo, but I only watched season 1, so idk.
Most romcoms have very little plot progression too, so it's not even surprising.

I once almost watched that thinking it's a time travel plot.

The "worst" one according to popular opinion might be this one:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/32438/Mayoiga

Tho it kinda is bait till the end until you realize it's not what you might have exspected it to be.
I still loved it tho - but it can be very misleading.

Now I have to mention the best one I encountered so far too:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/24765/Gakkougurashi#

PS: Ga-Rei-Zero is really confusing at first, I liked it waaay better on my second watch years later.
The story starts shortly before the end, then switches back to tell the how it all came to be before wrapping it all up nicely with a satisfying conclusion.
