No. From what I see online, there are way more women who are open to reading yuri than men who are open to reading yaoi. If I had to guess the reason, it has to do with masculinity, and women in general have higher EQ. Personally, I read yuri from time to time and my sister does as well. I can't say I'm into it, but I certainly don't hate it. I don't really care about the genders/sexuality of the main characters when it comes to reading romance. As long as the story and art is good, I'll read anything.

Well i know some straight females that watch or read yuri. But i dont know a single straight kan liking yaoi. I mean i dont consider myself a macho and i have absolutly nothing against gay men whatever. But i still find two men kissing hard to look at. I dont know why, it is like it is. But i never saw my wife saying: "two girls kissing? Disgusting"

@fbjim overtones or undertones? because death note can be yaoi bait at most but not a yaoi show heck there are lots of shonen that are yaoi bait especially sports manga like blue lock and kuroko no basket and thats why there are lots of fujoshi fans of them and not just male fans

not really, I never encountered yuri hate from woman, I personally don't mind yuri and I'm not into yaoi, I just watch the genre'a If I think something is interesting [or a pretty guy baits me into watching it]. Plus of course they are man that like yaoi [and not only gay/bi man watch it/read it]. Also I'm pretty sure that woman are more accepting and fluid in their sexuality anyway [at least in my bubble]

Well, as a male, I don't hate either, but both mostly dislike both as far as both being toward the bottom of the list if I were to draw up a list of every recognized genre on MAL from my favorite to least favorite. I'd place them both around equally low near Mecha and Idol-related Music. Sure, if I had to choose, I'd have a slight preference for Yuri, but not by much. I'm just generally not as interested in either of these same-sex relationships (whether male-male or female-female). Only a few outlier exceptions (like Happy Sugar Life).

women like yuri: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=2198003 I don't have the bigger study outside of MAL readily available, but from what I remember about 65% of women like yuri, even more than guys (that are just under 60%). The result is a split demographics of men and women for yuri. Meanwhile only about 5-8% of men like yaoi, where almost the entire demographics is female.

Speaking as a male, I can't say I hate yaoi, BL, or shows with BL elements, but I am indifferent to it, though I can say the same for every genre that isn't CGDCT, which just happens to have a huge overlap with yuri which I also enjoy. As someone who is indifferent, I simply wouldn't look for anime with those elements, but I wouldn't drop an anime that just happened to have those elements if I stumble into it. That being said, I do raise the point of hate not being equal to indifference, which I am not sure many summaries of polling data makes that distinction.

im pretty neutral to yaoi and not interested in it, some western works like The Originals, TLOU even made me respect the gay couple. but those who love old-fashioned fairy-tale stories and seek true love with their own princes, those who love to self-insert into a victim that needs a knight to protect, need a man to rely on, were probably the ones that hate yuri, imo. women like that irl are nothing more than toys for men to play with, when men are bored, they can throw that toy away and get a new one easily. so at the end of the day, that type of girls are but a subject to the male gaze, to their carnal cravings. it makes no difference for any woman who has the ideology of the alpha male superior, which was born from within their fetus, just like the old age, just like in feudalism and patriarchy.

I have meet a lot: from women that are openly against it, women that say they are "ok" but when they see 2 women together they found it gross, and yes, also women that were actually lesbien/bi and didnt have a problem. And they werent many. That idea of "all women are actually bi/lesbian" is one of the most stupid ideas to ever be pushed in the recent years. Probably made by delusional that didn meet a single women outside. And this applies to yuri as well, because of social pressure many will never say "oh yeah, i hated it", they will just silently skip the anime. |

I didn’t realise men HATE yaoi. I’m a woman and I’ll read/watch a yuri series without a second thought. FM, MM, FF, I’m not too picky on the gender or sexuality of the characters so long as the art is nice and the story is interesting. That reminds me. I work in a library and my boss (knowing I like manga) asked me to order more LGBT manga and I had to awkwardly explain what yaoi was to her.

It's less about hating and more about lack of interest. Lesbians or bi women are most likely to have some interest in yuri than a straight women for obvious reasons, even so their interest towards yuri isn't strong as gay or bi guys interest towards Yaoi, meawhile straight males liking Yaoi is very rare. Fujoshis in the other hand -at least from my experience being in the BL fandom for many years- have a strong dislike towards female characters in yaoi stories to the point female characters are almost non-existent or just erased from the show.

There is something interesting I've seen pointed out in a video about the labels we use for queer anime and manga and how there are discrepancies when male and female characters are the main subject. When Achillean (same sex attracted for men) relationships are shown in Japanese media there is a distinction in the terminology used based off the target demographic the media is aimed towards. Yaoi is aimed more towards heterosexual women while Bara is aimed more towards Achillean men. Meanwhile when it comes to the depiction of sapphic relationships, Yuri is the catch all and there is no distinction in the categorization on what is and isn't made for sapphic women as the intended audience. Therefore the more fetishy stuff made for men is also lumped in with the stuff actually made for sapphic women under the same umbrella. I figured this would be an interesting addition to this conversation to make by pointing this out.

Sounds ideal for an introvert and book lover. Jokes aside, but if you don't mind me asking, did the job require you to have a librarian degree?
