Hi, I love anime but I'm much more of a film person than an anime person and I look at anime largely from a cinema lens. Does anyone else do this? Would love to meet other anime fans that are hardcore cinephiles.

I loved watching live action films long before I began watching anime. Though my tastes are usually confined to old school classic films such as Lawrence of Arabia or the 1960's Soviet adaptation of War and Peace.

Its just that nowadays I'm too preoccupied with video games as my primary hobby. I still go out to watch movies in a theater when I find the time. The most recent live action film I watched in a cinema was Conclave, which I enjoyed immensely.

@Alpha-Nine The last new movie I saw was Anora. That was pretty good. I also saw that movie Challengers. That was terrible though. You into Robert Bresson at all?

Sorry man, haven't found time to watch any of Bresson's films. 😔

Hell, the only Akira Kurosawa movies I've seen are his samurai epics. I have yet to see Kurosawa's other works such as Madadayo.

Oh boy, the challenge of being a video gamer, cinephile, book worm, casual otaku all at the same time!

@Alpha-Nine It is hard to juggle it all! I get into brief anime phases every year and otherwise mostly watch movies. As far as reading, I just LOVE Dostoevsky, and I love Cormac McCarthy too but Dostoevsky deserves the all caps love for me. I dont read many books. Kurosawa is cool, I've never seen Madadayo either. I think the only non samurai film of his I've seen is Ikiru.

I wouldn't call myself a "hardcore cinephile," but I do see myself as a movie person first and anime person second.

I admit that I've been focusing on anime for the past year and haven't seen that many movies recently...

Also, a "cinephile" would still check out anime movies. I saw Blue Giant the other day and I thought it was a great movie, anime or not. Pretty sure moviegoers and film critics that don't watch anime can still enjoy and appreciate the movie. Look Back was another wonderful movie.

I used to go to the cinema from time to time, but mostly only if someone invites me to watch something or the latest movie of Fast & Furious has been released, which I have lost interest at. Nowadays, I'm only going to the cinema for only certain anime movies, because it's a different and better experience to watch it with a few other people on a big screen than on the screen of your laptop at home. Furthermore, it often takes a few months until it's available on Crunchyroll, so I don't have to wait a long time until I'm able to watch it.

You know, I am something of a cinephile myself. Or better say I was one before the big fall of cinematography. Now I look at movies from anime perspective since the last one became far superior without even trying to do much on purpose of competition, it's just kept slowly evolving through years while kept somewhat middle quality and variety at least. I cannot say the same about movies though, people are not happy with isekai and it's easy to understand and except but in movies as a whole are no better than worst genre of anime.

I don’t know whether I’d call myself a cinephile, but I’ve been trying to watch more world or non-mainstream cinema over the last few years. Sometimes if I’m burnt out on anime, that’s what I watch. I’ve got a growing DVD collection of foreign movies.

Regarding Japanese cinema, I should probably watch more (especially samurai movies). I’ve seen some classics like Human Centipede Condition trilogy, High and Low, Ran…. also some 90s stuff like Audition, Cure, Love Letter…

I gave up on Hollywood 20 years ago as I have not seen an original idea produced in 30 years. Sadly, I see anime headed in the same direction. And with Sony's take over of Kadakowa I only see that trend accelerating.

@joemaamah There's definitely original ideas coming out but its rare these days. It's much worse now than it was in the 90s. This is the first year in movie history where the top ten highest grossing movies are all sequels :(

@Guilmon1 I'm into that stuff too, especially analyzing archetypes and religious symbolism. Anime has a ton of that stuff very explicitly. I watched the first Naruto movie recently, and it was almost funny how covered it was in symbolism, white horses, rainbows, a prince and princess.

It's impossible to be a "cinephile Anime fan" since most Anime are not films and being a cinephile means you won't watch or won't be interesed in TV shows which most Anime are.

Lol, I meant that modern movies are pure equivalent of isekai, that's it. I don't know what so good you find about modern movies to begin with since they are pathetic in terms of plot and direction.

@Lawgun Modern movies aren't a monolith. The 2010s and 2020s are the worst decades in the history of cinema (and in the history of anime), but nonetheless great films have come out. Even this year we had La Cocina, a very good film.

Well I use to watch a fair bit of cinema, it got lesser as I grew older. But I occasionally watch some good films like 'The Death of Stalin', and some okay to average films like 'Deadpool and Wolverine'. Generally if I had to tier my interests it would go;

  1. Anime
  2. Games
  3. Movies
  4. Tv Shows
  5. Comics/Books
  6. Cosplay

In that order.
Sometimes it takes a real man to be best girl. Gilgamesh is also chad.

@Wyatt I do that with movies too, I just phrased it that way because anime forum.

But that aside, sure I'll give some examples. A recent one would be with Samurai Flamenco. There's this monster that shows up in episode 7 called "Guillotine Gorilla". This monster is, as it sounds, a gorilla with a guillotine right in the middle of it's body. My thought with that was "Ok..were does the food go if that thing eats? There's a guillotine where it's stomach should be"

I've had some thoughts with My Hero Academia quirks too. Like does that one guy who shoots tape out his arms ever run out of tape, and what's the tape even made out of? It comes out of his body so it has to be part of himself.

So yeah, mostly kinda dumb things like that.

@Wyatt I don't really follow/study directors, even though I would like to learn more about them.

You mentioned Mizoguchi somewhere in the thread, and I can say I did see Sansho the Bailiff. I've forgotten a lot of it, but I still remember the final scene. I was left emotionally devastated, and out of the anime that I've seen, only Grave of the Fireflies maybe comes close.

And if we're talking about the 50's, Ozu Yasujiro is pretty much essential viewing, if you haven't already (I've only seen two of his movies myself). I saw Early Spring just a few weeks ago actually, and I was surprised by how much it felt like a slice-of-life, but focusing more on the bitterness of life, rather than the sweetness. It could come across as mind-numbingly boring, but I liked how this movie stubbornly examines many aspects of the mundane everyday lives of (unhappy) regular people and slowly pieces together a dramatic story.

@Wyatt Maybe a bit basic but I'm a big fan of Stanley Kubrick movies (2001, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut). I also quite like Bergman too (Scenes from a Marriage, Persona, Wild Strawberries, Autumn Sonata). Other miscellaneous movies I like are Godfather 1+2, Green Mile, Solaris 1972, Three Colours trilogy...

I've heard of Mizoguchi, I think I have Ugetsu Monogatari on a USB somewhere. I'll watch it when I have the chance.

I dislike the fact that contemporary Western movies and TV shows tend to gravitate towards darker "natural lighting". And it really rubs me the wrong way when this style of cinematography is lauded with awards... while anime is looked down upon despite some shows displaying great use of visual storytelling that can run circles around your run-of-the-mill Hollywood blockbuster.
