Damn, felt bad for Joletna here. She has talent, work ethic, and wants to prove herself but her gender prevents her from sucess.

Got more deep dives into Astronomy theories but I think it's even interesting to see how their society views.

Yeah, misogyny was all the rage back in the day, would only make sense the anime would touch on it then. Poor Joletna though, all she wanted was to become a scholar that'll be in the history books, but because of her gender she can't... or can she?

Now that Badeni and Oczy spotted her, it might be the golden opportunity to, now just go in the history book, but as LEGENDS in the history books.

Oczy is a real one for wanting to honor Rafal's wishes from forever ago to pay Potocki back even if it costs him his entire cut.

However Jolenta's interaction with those two goes down, hope it leads her to something better than being forced to go full Metal Gear Solid just to learn something only for all her efforts to get robbed from her. And that distinctive laid back voice of her dad... Could it be?

CALLED IT that the girl would be Novaks daughter.Couldnt tell at first if they were discriminating cuz of gender, age or class, but guess its a mix of all but most of the first one.

Dunno if Potocki deserves the reward, but hopefully Badeni memorized that letter since Oczy couldnt read.Wonder if the count wouldve been cool if it was Jolentas work, but its better this way.

the fact that Novak is Jolenta's dad is shocking, does he think of Rafal when he looks at his daughter? does he somehow feel awful from the fact that he was responsible of Rafal's death then years later his own daughter is pursuing astronomy?

Like that this anime tackles two issues

The first one is most discoveries, especially in modern age, are works of many people, or even many generations. Thus the phrase "standing on the shoulders of giants".

The second is obviously gender barrier. Even nowadays it still exists, in some countries there's ban on women education, even in the developed country like Japan still have scandal where medical schools gave men more admission scores than women, and this scandal is as recent as 2006. And here's their excuse "Many female students who graduate end up leaving the actual medical practice to give birth and raise children". I say "gender barrier" instead of "misogyny" because there's case like Alan Turing as well. He received the apology almost 60 years after he died.

We have a new character, Jolenta who seems like another victim of this show which shows humanity's curiosity and their desire to know about everything. She's so sweet and is very smart but is being used at her workplace, and by Kolbe who's using her observations for his name and fame. Poor girl. I felt her feelings during that scene. It's the testament of that time.

Also, it seems like, she might be the daughter of Nowak, at least from Kenjiro Tsuda's voice, what an irony that your own child might end up being the one to take Rafal's legacy ahead. It's looking so good with each episode. I can't wait to see where things go from here on out. Also, Oczy is a nice guy who wants to give 10% of profits to Potocki because Rafal's letter told him to. What a sweet guy. Our three main characters are finally meeting. Peak.

Man, even in anime misogyny straight pisses me off. Very hard episode to watch. Jolenta is just as talented if not MORE talented than the men at the academy and just gets walked all over and taken advantage of. I can’t believe this bitch Kolbe had the AUDACITY to take her work and publish it as his own. What women have had to go through throughout history in the STEM field just enrages me.

But what’s even more wild is that it’s NOWAK DAUGHTER?!! This is gonna be crazy, is he really gonna have to kill his own child when she inevitably gets involved with the heliocentric theory? I’m lowkey not looking forward to these next few eps because I have a feeling I’m gonna be heartbroken.

Ironically, if Jolenta told the count that it was indeed her treatise, she might not have got involved with the bulletin posting which could ultimately alter the whole trajectory of her life

Didn’t really vibe with how Badeni wanted to screw over Potocki and not honor Rafal’s wishes. Also a 90-10 split is crazy disrespectful to Oczy. If he gonna be an asshole like that I’m lowkey not gonna mourn him if they get caught lmao. Good episode though, again this show just really keeps you on the edge of your seat!

@WhiteTestament How could they have handled it? They hid his face in the manga and the anime. In the manga, there’s no sound so we can’t hear her dad’s voice, but in the anime Tsuda Ken’s voice is instantly recognizable, and I don’t know how they could have gone around that. It’s not like they could have gotten another voice actor for that specific part to hide the reveal lol.

Jolenta is brilliant, but her chance to ascend is blocked...

Another really good episode. This anime tackles a lot of interesting topics like the thirst for research as well as truth, and now it is tackling the gender divide and its effect on academia. Jolenta works hard and has been very motivated in her work, but to see it getting published in someone else's name just because of her gender must have been very discouraging. It makes sense given the time period for people to have these mindsets around gender, so I'm glad it is being explored. It was very intriguing that she's Nowak's daughter though, it should make for some really dramatic stuff.

The characters overall continue to be a joy to watch, especially Badeni who has made bold choices without even batting an eye, and I love seeing that confidence. Looking forward to Jolenta meeting Badeni and Oczy next time.

After the beautiful explanation and simplification of the heliocentrism theory considering the limited knowledge of the 16th century and taking religion and God as a big factor into account, the focus is now put in a new character. Indeed, it's Jolenta, a prodigy 14 year old girl whose manuscripts and intellect are quite commendable but also can't be shared in a society with such prejudices and sexism that could label it as witchcraft. She so happens to also be the daughter of the inquisitor we've been following for a while (I think it's him, the voice is pretty spot on). So now it's her the one who's gonna join Oczy and Badeni in proving the theory after supplying an answer to a complex astronomy problem?

This is getting quite intriguing.

Jolenta is THE spiritual successor of Rafael. How ironic that Nowak's daughter will now pursue same thing that he executed people for.

Being 15th century Poland it was actually normal that a 14 year old girl is discrenmented. She was so happy and hopeful to get recognition for his work only to be crushed. Kolbe was an ahole but in a sense he did protected her if her work gets to wrong hands she would have been labelled as witch or something and maybe even executed.

Her curiosity and talent did pay off as she solved Badeni's problem

Okay so that's how our inquisitors daughter joins the gang. Pretty solid setup. Badeni is a bit of a dick not honouring Rafal's wish regarding the profits lol, but I'm sure he'll have no qualms working with a young women. The biggest hurdle will be if she backs out and says she wasn't the one who answered it.

WE FINALLY GOT TO MEET NOWAK'S DAUG- I MEAN, JOLENTA! I must say, I really liked her character. From the 3 main characters (at least for now) she is the one I like the most. In a way, she resembles Rafal, which is the least ironic to think about, how Nowak's daughter ended up with the same interests has Rafal. Rafal's inspiration was so great that even his daughter is following his steps. Anyways, I could see from a distance that Kobel was using Jolent to get more praise. I believe he might not be the worst character that is on the show, but he sure knows that what he's doing is not correct. I just hope that Jolenta gets the recognition she deserves, in the future. Also, Nowak as a father is really something else.

Badeni is more of a narcicistic than I thought. Honestly, not respecting the wishes from the previous researchers is just plain imoral, especially because he wasn't the one to come up with that idea in the first place, don't act all almighty Badeni. Can't believe Oczy was the one that had the idea that it was actually something not ethical to do, I'm starting to like him more, and he will certainly be the one to make Badeni get a hold of himself.

Anyways, that end of the episode was chilling, and I can't wait to see the talk they are going to have. The trio is finally formed.

By the way, so the "knight" we kinda see in the opening is a nobel, I wonder if he's going to be involved in this investigation, because in all honesty, he seems to be an important character, but doesn't even appear at the opening or together with the other 3, so I don't know, will Badeni really not be the one publishing the final research?

Didn't think about that, but I suppose that in the manga this mystery would be much easier to hide, but in the anime, it would be pretty hard to do it, I honestly don't know how they could have managed it (only if they cut the dialogue).

And now that I think, with Jolenta working with Oczy, it will be weird, since Nowak knows Oczy and actually kinda needs to kill him if he sees him. So i suppose that reveal would be much more surprising.

And I don’t know how they could have gone around that

For example, by having the daughter do both parts.
She says her line and then a short silence and she retells her dad's reply using indirect speech, then she replies to that, and so on.

It's not even an uncommon trope in anime.
Though it's generally used to just not dub that one person lol
But that would be a neat way to use the trope to hide a character's identity.
It's not like it won't be revealed later so it wouldn't even be overused.

Welp, they missed chance to do that I guess

Once again a masterpiece. I'm glad to finally meet Jolenta. The misogyny she faces is so frustrating and her father being Nowak is really interesting and tense, since we know what she's going to study. The episode construction of showing her and Badeni/Oczy side by side until they finally meet was very clever. I can't wait for next week's episode!!!

Thinking back to when curiosity was reserved for men alone. Countless records are written in the names of thousands—not just men, but women—who, terrified of a world where thinking wasn’t "for women," chose to ignore the oppressive fear that hid behind such ridiculous notions. It's clear that to reach the truths of today, all kinds of people have touched the most delicate fibers of thought, driven by an insatiable curiosity, from the maddest of men to the most "unimportant" woman in a time of horror.

Jolenta solved an astronomical problem at just 14 years old, while here I am barely understanding fractions. With the weight of the world’s fear on her shoulders, Jolenta published her answer. Although she hoped no one would see it, she undoubtedly wanted to be noticed by those who value intellect, curiosity, and imagination above the notion of whether a woman "should" think. And thankfully, the right people came along.

This anime is a masterpiece. I love how the records of knowledge, passed down with hope, connect those who want to continue that legacy against all odds.

Poor Jolenta.. she just wants to do her thing. Guess it is the olden days. But hey, you can't say she isn't driven. She knows her way around the tunnels, and even got clued in on some secret intel right in the opening scene. Probably the gateway into her exploring heretic research. This intro adds another character to the heliocentric legacy.

To think she wouldn't be allowed to be in the talks for "obvious differences", that's the excuse XD. But yeah, different time different standards. Can't push modern standards onto the past people. I would say "at least she has someone in her corner", but that one guy who took her papers will probably get all the credit for her work.

And we get a break from that to go back to the Badeni duo. Not wrong that those who pursue the research need to be bold. It is a life threatening endeavor after all. The fact he planned on burning it if he didn't finish it himself though.. what about all the stepping stones that came before him. Bless Oczy for trying to speak up for the other researcher.

Jolenta is truly a scholar at heart, even if the department tasks her with library work.

Message boards in town square were their rich Twitter of the olden days huh XD suppose that lines up.

Knew the guy would take credit for Jolenta's work :( sad times for her. The BS of academia. And he expects her to make more for him.. wtf. She had a chance to tell the truth to the lord that asked her, and she missed out on it. The pressure was too much.. unfortunately. Once again, poor Jolenta with the tears.

Be like Badeni and peek in the books! Welp hey, at least these two might treat her better than academia.

An episode that made me personally sad and frustrated. I had hoped that she would tell the Professor the truth, but she felt that she was too small and unworthy to do that instead. I hope with her meeting with Oczy and Badeni, Jolenta can prove that she is worthy and deserves to be a scholar.

On the other hand, I think it's sweet to see Oczy who still wants to do Rafal's will.... that he probably doesn't even know how long the will has been there. That might be a normal thing to do, but seeing Badeni's nature in stark contrast walking with him, makes me feel like... oh, Oczy really looks like someone very innocent.

Skipping the scene altogether would have been kinda bad for Jolenta's character growth, but they could have had her retell the scene by itself to mask it better. This is too obvious and gives away too easily who her dad actually is...

Nowak doesnt know oczy's face, he didn't bother to see them when they were boarding the carriage with the heretic and fought him when Oczy had his mask up...

Also , why didn't they show his face when they were talking? Everybody could tell who he was by his voice 😂

WHAT! Jolenta is Nowak's daughter, holy shit, can't fool me with that voice. How the turn tables, she's going to inherit Rafal's principles.

Badeni's a fucking asshole, love him though. I can respect his desire for him and only him to be the one to leave his name in history and prove heliocentrism himself. But I guess Oczy is going to be his voice of reason.

I fucking knew it, Kolbe was going to submit the work for his own. Piast seems like an amiable man, I hope Jolenta meeting Oczy and Badeni will give her the confidence to admit that the Treatise are her own. Though Kolbe is an asshole, it's not entirely impossible that what he was saying wouldn't happen, especially in this time period. So Jolenta's still got to be careful. But it's going to be really interesting once Nowak finds out, he's definitely going to have to make a choice in the future regarding his daughter.

This was the most thrilling episode for me since Rafal's last. Jolenta is a sympathetic and exciting character, I hope she doesn't meet too tragic of an end. The fact that she evolves in such a misogynistic environment AND her dad happens to be the heretic slayer doesn't bode well for her, though... As for Kolbe, I smelt something fishy from the start despite his good looks, and sure enough: he a rat.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the interaction with Jolenta, Oczy, and Badeni goes in the next episode. I felt bad when the latter just burned the paper asking to pay Potocki.
