@HOOfan_1 I dunno. Kinda feels like Ayase has been doing the bulk of the butt kicking up to this point. Okarun seems more like a liability since she has to split her spirit power between fighting the aliens and keeping him from going full Turbo Granny.

A few more notes:
  • I love how the Japanese for Turbo Granny is "Turbo oba." So much fun to hear them say it.
  • The sumo alien was clearly CG, but impressively well integrated. The line weight matched perfectly and the kineticism of the regular animation kept the ever-moving CG from feeling out of place.
  • Kind of wish they had animated the sumo alien's demise rather than it being a still image, but it's kind of in keeping with the manga, which is known for its incredibly detailed full spreads pretty much every chapter.

Episode 3

Here comes Momo's granny Seiko, and she's a total badass. And of course, there's something occultic about her seeing that she looks much younger than she really is. And then it becomes a showdown between grannies as Seiko is trying to whip Okarun into shape seeing that he's possessed by a granny as well, and has potential to use it to be strong even though he would rather not deal with her. So after a chaotic start to this show, this one is pretty chill, relatively speaking.

Another great episode with some worldbuilding, and the introduction of the show's co-Best Girl in Momo's grandma Seiko. She's the Obi-Wan Kenobi of the show.

Important translation note at 9:21: It's not "Hundred Kilo Granny," but should have been rendered "Hundred kph (kilometers per hour) Granny" on account of her speed, not weight.

Also, is Momo's mouth supposed to be moving at 20:25?

Metric prefixes can be used anywhere, but yeah, I kind of see where you're going with this. The line should clarify that part better. In fact, the dub line actually mentions "Hundred-kilometer-an-hour Granny."

@boldulysses I read a book about ancient Egypt, and I think it described a guy being made a eunuch, and they cut everything off, and put in a tube to keep the urethra open.

I just assumed Okarun went from a man's to a woman's, um, configuration down there. The anime plays (appropriately) fast and loose with details like that. ;)

Absolutely loving Momo's grandmother. What the heck was she wearing in the morning? Looked like fingerless long gloves, stirrup thigh socks, and a corset. Are those a thing in Japan or just made up by the mangaka?

No idea; I was too distracted by Momo's fluffy outfit and the genuinely enthralling sequence of her being taught how to use her powers.

I like how all the things grandma said about the idol guy turned out to be true.

Momo has it bad if she swoons just hearing the name Ken Takakura. I guess years of idolizing him has given her some uncontrollable responses.

Yeah, this seems nothing like FLCL to me. Much closer to a mix of Mob Psycho, Jujutsu Kaisen, Dark Gathering and a splash of JoJo

@Domvina the thing around her waste is a haramaki, which is kind of seen as old people clothing.

This feels very much like FLCL to me. FLCL was much less straightforward and more metaphorical, but they both have the same hectic pacing and they way a lot of the action scenes are presented is similar. That's kind of what I was talking about with Mecha-Ude too. The story in that is pretty straightforward too, so you might give that a shot. It's not as good as this, but it's been OK so far.

This show has been consistently entertaining and of high-quality so far. I did notice that it was a bit tamer- camera angles and activity-wise- for the recent (3rd) episode but, it was still in very good quality. But I do expect them to have episodes with toned-down qualities for less important parts, and I wouldn't mind it if it means the staff got some load off their work, and as long as the show remain cinematic at its core. Hope it retains its cinematic quality for the future sequels.

Also... Domi-Granmommie.

Now that is a grandma, again not what I was expecting but delightfully surprised by what I got. She is just the thing to cleanse the palate of the horrible stereotypocal grannies of shows like Rent-a-Girlfriend.
Ooh turbo granny a little more powerful than expected. Cool explanation of how all the powers work, always nice when a show actually sets out all the rules.

Once healed the tubw was removed. Yeah unfortunately even now because of disease or accidents many men have no penis. A quick Google search revealed doctors create an opening behind the scrotum.
Not sure how much Turbo granny bit off but its possible he still has a nub. Since this must be magical (otherwise not sure how he survived the blood loss) I will guess he can still go from where it used to be.

I'm gonna guess she's in her 60s and the mangaka has deliberately gone against the stereotypical depiction of an older woman in Japanese fiction as a literal "little old lady" in her design.

Episode 4

It's time to settle the score once and for all with that speedy old hag. While there was no way Momo and Okarun could beat Turbo Granny on foot, they didn't need to as they just hitched a ride on top of a rail car as that thing moves at 120 km/h whereas Turbo Granny, now having turned into a crab, only goes 100 km/h as her former name implies. But there's just one problem in that the train slows around curves and Turbo Granny doesn't. However, Momo planned for that, and with help from her granny that they beat her at her own game, and free the girls who have been violated to death by her. So now, Okarun's junk is back, but it looks like his balls go missing based on the title of the next episode, so only one problem was taken care of while another problem props up.

That was one really wacky run through the city, made even wackier by the use of William Tell and the Can-Can as background music.

Based on the next episode's title, it looks like Turbo Granny didn't return everything it stole from Okarun once it was defeated.

That whole sequence had an intense WB Loony Toons chase feel. Especially with the choice of music. So much so it had to be deliberate. And completely fitting.

I have to say, I'm warming up to the OP. Especially when the melody kicks in. It's a good jam, and the visuals are a lot of fun and fit the show well.

Such a fun episode. To @Domvina's point, I don't know of any other franchise that so effectively walks the tightrope of "that's absolutely random and bonkers" and "but it also makes perfect sense." Some of the cuts were amazing, like the crab erupting through the wall of the mountain road, and the transformation sequences.

Man you feel like you had a workout after an episode of this show. So great, and yeah definitely a Looney Tunes homage with the music. I loved it. Can't get enough of this show. Also the end and the subtleties of the Japanese language and "sayonara, mata ashita/ne" are why I don't watch dubs.

Sometimes the subtitle writers decide to "localize" it and destroy the meaning too. That's why I like when they sometimes put explanatory text on screen

A good localizer could figure out to use "farewell" for sayonara and "see ya tomorrow" for mata ashita but often the botch the localization

FWIW the dub actually did a good job of inflecting "goodbye" in two different ways to convey the possible implications. It was clear and felt natural.

Some unpacking of the motifs and directorial choices of the first episodes. His discussion of the color palette in particular is so obvious it's kind of embarrassing to admit it went over my head. Yep, same guy. He did deep dives into Land of the Lustrous and Darling in the FranXX as well, among others. Did a really good job of unpacking Darling's trainwreck last half-dozen episodes in a way that provided a lot of catharsis to those who had enjoyed the show up until that point. I think he has some professional training or went to film school or something.

Need to use a slightly darker subtitle for this episode, too much white on white. Maybe shift up to a yellow or give it a dark outline

Other than that I'm loving this relationship. These two are a great pair

Episode 5

Here comes the Lucky Cat, and it turns out that while Momo defeated Turbo Granny, she was only weakened and she's still inside Okarun. Had he not noticed that his balls were missing she would have been able sneak up on him. In the end, Seiko managed to get her consciousness out of his body and she ends up inside the Lucky Cat, all while Okarun still gets to use her power of transformation, and only Seiko herself can undo it. So they make a deal to give Turbo Granny her powers back in exchange for Okarun's balls, but there's just one problem in that she doesn't actually have them. Pretty crazy turn of events that all was, but at least this time Turbo Granny won't be threatening anybody anytime soon.

What's the deal with the English subtitles on this episode!? I couldn't make them out at all when light backgrounds were behind them.

The whole sequence of Momo and Okarun passing each other multiple times while trying to find each other was kind of silly, all leading up to that bump in the face. And I KNEW that someone was going to assume it was a kiss the moment it happened. Then Aira tried to make small talk with Okarun, and Momo dropped a washtub on her. But now Turbo Granny's still around and Okarun doesn't have his balls.
