It's crazy what a rebellion can do in their world. Tokiyuki still has a lot to learn but I think Yorishige can be a good guide for him. Their relationship is interesting and in a way, I do find Yorishigae likable with his charisma.

Something else I noticed is the unique art style that balances between the usual look and more edgy style art. An unique take in this show imo. Good stuff, more character personalities, lore, etc. This anime continues to impress.

The journey begins.

On their journey to Shinano, Tokiyuki, Yorishige, Shizuku, Ayako, and Kojirou find themselves stranded in an abandoned house for several days due to heavy guard at the city exits. While Tokiyuki sleeps, Yorishige keeps watch and tries to kiss him on the cheek, but Tokiyuki avoids it by leaping onto a beam, surprising the others. Tokiyuki voices his worries about leaving Kamakura for Shinano, but Shizuku reassures him that they can pose as refugees from a shrine that recently burned down, using their attire as cover.

Ffs, Tokiyuki's uncle is that type of character that I despise and find annoying. His design doesn't help either, dude looks like a whole titan. Really wish that they didn't give the budget to that scene of him running through the woods. He doesn't deserve it. But I would be lying if I said I didn't like seeing the absolute spectacle that was him using his sword. Entire B part of the episode was such a spectacle. Espeically that final attack on Tokiyuki's uncle.

Tokiyuki's first battle was a success!

This episode once again leaves extremely conflicted. I'm not really a fan of the cast so far besides some potential maybe being there with Tokiyuki's character to grow, but Suwa's character and the comedy involved with the cast is fucking terrible and insufferable to the point of me not caring for the rest of the cast so far. The animation efforts with the comedy are definitely there and I can admire that, even if it makes everything feel a lot more insufferable and overexaggerated as a result. Even the antagonist for this episode, Godaiin was so over-the-top and corny where the animation and his overexpressiveness made me more annoyed with the actual show itself than just celebrating its animation with him particularly. But the actual episode did deal a bit with Tokiyuki's trauma a little and the fact that his brother was also screwed and betrayed, alongside his willingness to kill and take a step forward to getting revenge was really good and the actual action scenes looked absolutely sublime and some parts were even better than the high bar that the first episode set.

The series and its brutality and certain themes for Tokiyuki to overcome are cliche but have high potential here but the tonal shifts and the overall overexaggerated, comedic nature of a lot of the scenes, cast and villains seemingly are so dreadful to watch and sort of ruin the amount of fun I'm watching with the action here. It's easily the most conflicting start I've felt with a show this year, made even more conflicting since Yuusei Matsui did write one of my favorite series of all time and the comedy there I found more than tolerable and even liked in comparison to this. There is so much animation gold here and I'm glad that the second episode kept up with the quality but man, if the cast and comedy was better and had more to offer, this might be a contender for best anime of the season for me. Sadly, the faults are very, very hard to ignore with how 'in-my-face' they are so am not feeling that way so far. Epitome of love and hate so far lol.

I’m LOVING this one so far and as we’ve all seen the animation tip top. I’m just hoping beyond hope that he grows up some. Not so much his mind but I’d like him to age to 15-16 at the very least. Having a literal child take revenge on battle hardened ruthless killers only works (for me anyway) if the mc is perhaps reincarnated or even a regressor. 10 year old little boys with other regular children at his side makes his taking revenge just about silly… please grow up soon Tokiyuki! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Once again an amazing episode with breathtaking animation. Literally. It's such a great anime and absolutely loved Tokiyuki's little "lalala" moment when he was evading his uncle's sword. Laughed so hard and loved it so much. Gosh, so proud to have be here from the very beginning to see this grow and hurt my heart so many times. It's worth it <3

@acidbart He is currently 12 in the manga. You will most likely see him at that age in about 2-3 seasons.

It's just so peak omgggg. Love the way they did the animation and the artwork, and I've never thought this show to be this funny while having a quite a dark theme. Tokiyuki is undoubtedly going to be my most favorite character this season!

First half was dragged out comedy is kinda over the top, didn't land many times (wtf was the board game even meant to be I get why uncle has reference to dice and chances but out of context and time board games)
Also comedy doesn't really suit well with seriousness sometimes. But the fight and animation is great. Not a fan of Suwa but these kids are fine.

Also brilliant end.
Revenge is best served cold

" This head might not be enough to avenge all of them but atleast it's a nice souvenir "

Well done Tokiyuki

Not just visually stellar but the story is also well-thought. Now we all know where the ball in the first episode fall from, from the head of their uncle, the gift from the future, send to the past, send to the next world.

sorry to kill the animation hype but this ep was very confusing and over the place. the little gang they have is cute and wholesome but in just 1 ep they got introduced and already are fighting alongside him, kinda meh for now.

again, this had some of the best animation I've ever seen (some well known animators on this ep) but the whole ep was really fast-paced fr. rn i remember this as the shota femboy anime with great colors and animation.

So Tokiyuki finally avenged his brother by killing the bastard Uncle that betrayed the Hojo clan. To be honest, I didn't think he had it in him to take his uncle's head like that. The fight scene was well animated as we see Tokiyuki elusiveness on full display and he's gain two additional companions to fight for him.

Wow! This was banger of an episode, they made sure they pack in multiple aspects effectively, without hampering the pace. How situation can better mould a character with right people with him is being depicted perfectly.

The artwork during the fight sequence was so beautiful and epic. It transported me back to 1300s era.

The most unserious, "serious show" out there. It looks very good visually, and the brutality is done really well, yet everything is so in-your-face and obnoxious at the same time. I do like loud comedy sometimes, but in this type of atmosphere, it just doesn't mesh well. If all the villains know how to do is scream and make faces, this is not going to turn out well for me. Very conflicted with this one, but you can really make the case for this to be one of the most well animated shows in a while.

Now I'm sure about it but production quality DEFINITELY overshadows the mediocre writing and that's a shame. I had some doubts from the first episode because I thought those severe tone shifts were more a symptoms of shonen tropes than the show itself, kind of similar of how Kimetsu no Yaiba sometimes loses itself inbetween overly dramatic scenes and comedy segments, but the main difference between KNY and the Elusive Samurai is that the first is a completely assumed fantasy show set during the Taisho period and the latter is entirely an historical story during the Edo period.
In the case of this show, the "historical" part of its narrative gets absolutely destroyed the moment you see 3 kids (including a girl) who might barely weight more than 45kg take up a fully grown adult man samurai by themselves. I'm not even bothered by the impossible dodges the main character is able to do, that falls under the suspension of disbelief but, the angry samurai dude who cuts trees with 3 slashes and does lighting fast swings with his sword while running and backflipping like it's fucking Akame Ga Kill, that is just too much.

I definitely see what Cloverworks wanted to do with this project because some of these animation cuts are just gorgeous and so innovative. You could only have this much artistic freedom using very 90s anime, Ninja Scroll-esque style show set during medieval japan that can allow you to go this expressive by using Ukiyo-e or calligraphy in your animation style.
Nevertheless none of those characters seem to have any personality at all for now other than 1 character trait pushed to the limit of what is bearable. I therefore qualify The Elusive Samurai to be the Sakugabooru anime of the season made for sakuga fans on twitter to masturbate endlessly meanwhile others will simply fap to the shota.

Tokiyuki taking down his traitorous uncle! An absolutely brutal scene to start the episode seeing how Tokiyuki older brother had been betrayed by their uncle. Thinking he could trust him only to end up beheaded. Their uncle is a true demon betraying his own family like that. Tokiyuki learning this causing him a great shock. Not only Takauji but the families that had served them for generations and their samurai retainers and even their one family betrayed the Hojo clan. Its truly despicable what has happened to them, Tokiyuki is having to claw his way back up. He does meet two new allies in Kojirou and Ayako, whom serve Yorishige family but will now help Tokiyuki in his journey. A lord needs strength around him after all so I like these two additions to the squad. Their first step being to take down the traitor uncle sounds great to me. Luring him into that field with Tokiyuki as bait was a great idea, uncle is just too strong for something like that and easily repels three kids. The animation looked so damn good during this fight, Tokiyuki ability to be elusive is crazy and fun to see in action. Kojirou and Ayako provided some good backup for him leading to that awesome moment of Tokiyuki cutting off uncle head. The first step to his revenge is complete!

This is so peak bruh idc what anyone says, I thought Tokiyuki would stop short of beheading that piece of shit uncle of his but I'm glad he went all in to kill him. Once again, this episode had sequences with breathtaking animation.

The uncle really got packed up by some children πŸ’€ I kind of wish the kids were several years older cause suspension of disbelief can only go so far, but it's still a fun watch.

Also, those who are calling this shotacon bait are really telling on themselves 😬

First they showed a girl being raped and murdered, now they showed the beheading of a little boy. Almost in detail. Is this show definitely a battle shonen that is aimed at teenagers? Yes, it's still a well-animated and historically accurate (more or less) show, but I'm too unaccustomed to such comedic cynicism. It's as if Takeshi Kitano had a hand in this.

I don’t know but they’d have to stop going overboard before this becomes a comedy blunder lol. Not saying they go full serious with stiff faces, but yeah, there’s a man who betrayed a kid and that resulted in beheading, so at the very least we shouldn’t be shown his clown faces to kill the mood lol.

That’s the only complain tbh, I mean as far as everything else goes, studio isn’t leaving anything to point a finger at. By the way, really glad that uncle got what he fucking deserved.

Heads are rolling in this week’s elusive samurai. This show’s not shying away from violence and hard to watch scenes at all, feels like Vinland Saga and Shogun. Another masterfully directed and animated episode with a VERY satisfying ending. Uncle Muneshige rest in PISS.

It be ya own people. Imagine selling out your own nephew(s) for some clout and to save your own skin. Disgusting piece of shit, the uncle got off easy if you ask me. Yea his betrayal was repaid in kind, but he needed to suffer the way he made Kunitoki suffer. The same mental anguish he put Tokiyuki thru. In a sense it is poetic justice that he did all of this to be famous and gain respect and now he’s infamous for being a traitor. Be careful what you wish for.

I love how they depicted the fight as a dice game of sorts. The unconventional visuals were so cool leading up to Tokiyuki’s flying decapitation. Ayako and Fujirou are gonna be great additions to the cast and they came in clutch helping buy time for Tokiyuki. May feel like he can’t trust anyone because of all that’s happened, but I think those two will be great allies for him going forward.

As usual Cloverworks cooked with the direction and gorgeous visuals/sakuga, but I’m also glad we didn’t have to wait long to start getting some revenge. It’s a long way to go, but now Tokiyuki has actual combat experience, has killed and has directly avenged his brother all in one episode.

It’s also been funny reading all the down bad shotacons getting horny over Tokiyuki on Twitter the last week πŸ˜‚

This show really excels in terms of animation. I spent a great portion of the fight almost speechless with the level of creativity and fluidity put on screen.

I was also very compelled by the most dramatic moments for the protagonist in this episode, where we can see how the massacre is affecting him, like in the nightmare sequence and when he discover what happened to his brother. This last scene, especially, was so impactful due to his visceral scream of pain. That was an excellent performance from his seiyuu.

However, it's after these same parts where the main problem of this anime shows itself. The huge and abrupt tonal shift accompanied by a, at the most, okayish display of the comedy of this series. We are not given a lot of time to sit with the trauma that the protagonist is going through and his attempts to process it before we are always interrupted by that priest. It's incredible how much the jokes coming from this character feel flat for me and always just kind of ruin the emotional connection that I'm forming with the anime. Knowing that this is from the same creator of Assination Classroom also makes me feel like the character is just a bad Koro-sensei knockoff.

I'm really hoping that they dial down on comedy moments and focus more on the emotional core of the story going forward because what they showed of it so far was strong and can solidify this as a great anime. But, well, at least, it was a good episode.

it's crazy how much sakuga there is and how beautiful the visuals are, they really put a lot of thought into adapting this.

whoever the traitor could be, Kunitoki's fate was truly unfortunate. Yorishige is too cool, he already knows what will happen, and Tokiyuki with his crazy elusiveness can make the traitor die.

The animation is great. The plot is nice but the forced comedy is just annoying. F*cking hell the MC just got news that his brother is dead and the piece of sh*t priest is making a joke. Annoying bloody character he is. I wish the show was serious but looks like the bland comedy will stick around till the end and this will get a 6-7/10 from me. Again the animation is on another level.

The comedy doesn't really land for me IMO, not the jokes themselves nor when they are used, though I think the latter is the result of being a very fast paced episode, or at least it felt that way. I feel as though Assassination Classroom probably had these same shifts, but they not only had more breathing room, but the shifts themselves weren't nearly as extreme, with the show surprisingly not shying away from violence and themes that feel odd for a shonen, but I'm down for it.

The colors, the animation, the overall style - everything is very high quality, but at the same time has a lot of personality and care put into it, and it truly feels like it has its own unique identity. It's downright impressive that this second episode outdid the first one.

I'm definitely going to continue watching this.

Really love this!!!

Now that we already know the true meaning behind the title, I can't help but to adore Tokiyoki for it. The supporting characters were lovable as well, and the addition of the other two characters just made it more fun (there are more though as seen in the opening). I also want to point out how the uncensored beheading and child-abuse made this darker despite the bright animation and colors---and how that contradiction made me fancy this show more as I'm used to anime that usually uses dark theme or night time when the situation is rather brutal or intriguing. Cloverworks is really cooking on this.
Looking forward to the next episode! πŸ–€
