This had a melancholic OP song with style but very well animated imo. The chereography to character body languages really fit for the theme.

This had heavy dialogues, a mixture of drama, and takes place in a school environment. Not going to lie, I like the quality of this anime in terms of its visuals with a movie-like experience. At the moment, it looks like it's Kobato and Osanai as the main two main leads in charge. Seems Kobato is trying to get away from troubles they can't escape him. There's sense of strange mystery revolving this anime so I'm intrigued to see more.

I really remember loving the author’s well known work Hyouka when watched it for the first time. Though it’s a different thing altogether how we never got a second season to continue fulfilling Chitanda’s curiosities:( Leaving that aside, this series looks very very similar to that one, except the main guy is actually someone who likes to take a bit of initiative lol. The overall atmosphere on the other hand, at least the conversations between Kobato and Osanai feels a lot more familiar as I’d remember from Hyouka.

By the way, any guy shouldn’t be messing with stuff that belongs to a girl, because I mean when you get caught, like that mean looking guy did, it gets really embarrassing lol, and moreover if that something was a way to confess your feelings, it gets uber awkward. Trust the duo though, they’d not let people know about this. Very engaging start despite it being just the introductory stuff. Again, a solid first episode, and hey, credit to the studio as well, very neat work. Looking forward.

Want Hyouka season two? Well take the next best thing from the same author.

Eve's OP might just be my OP of the season as of right now. While ammo's ED is OK.

Really interesting that they picked to make the entire anime in 21:9 aspect ratio. Regardless, this anime still looks beautiful. I'd go as far as to say that this is one the same level as Hyouka. Soundtrack is sounding VERY good as well. Props to the studio and staff. Production aside, this definitely has that Hyouka feel to it. Jougorou and Yuki are legit just Houtarou and Eru, I swear. Similar to Hyouka as well, this is a mystery.

There's many ways to adapt a first-person novel into an anime, but not turning the narration into dialogue at all is really impressive and skillful. And ofc, To create surprising character contrasts, you need a stereotypical girl character. Speaking on character's, I love Jougorou's performance series. His expressions always change. Poor Jougorou at the end though. Dude got his bike stolen lols.

Like Honobu's other series, this one will take time to become great. But when it does, it will be truly great, trust me.

From the author of Hyouka, novelist Honobu Yonezawa is back with the 2nd of his long-standing novel works of the Shoshimin Series: How to Become Ordinary. The novel released in 2004, with the anime finally arrivng this season 2 decades later, adapting the first 2 volumes covering both the Shunki Gentei Ichigo Tart and Kaki Gentei Tropical Parfait cases.

Eve's OP song is good, but alright and nothing too fancy, other than its unique aspect ratio. Same with ammo's ED.

Starting off with Volume 1 of the novel: Haruki Gentei Ichigo Tart Jiken a.k.a The Case of the Springtime Limited Edition Strawberry Tart, both middle school students of Jogoro Kobato and Yuki Osanai got accepted into Funato High, as well as Kobato's childhood friend of Kengo Dojima. As sweet as the confectionaries can be, Osanai wants the strawberry tarts so bad that Kobato would give her the light of day to do so. But Kengo requesting Kobato to help find a stolen pochette from a classmate (Yoshiguchi), it seems like a typical affair of lost-and-found.

Kengo being so serious to help Yoshiguchi find her lost pochette, that left Osanai waiting on Kobato for the while, though Takada being part of the sinister plan that he was the culprit, it had been Osanai secretly working for Kobato all the while, but something feels amiss that they both need to investigate further. And true indeed it does: a letter to Yoshiguchi, addressed from Takada, it's a messy love mystery affair between the 3 that both Kobato and Osanai managed to resolve, and that put their time to purchase the strawberry tarts back...which thankfully, they were able to get the last few from a famous stall.

Kobato witnessing Sakagami's bike being stolen from a gang, not to mention him stealing his bike so that he could get them back, thus spoiling the strawberry cakes...YELP.

Just like Hyouka, the series is rather cinematic in detail, which you rarely get these days. You need to pay CLOSE attention to what is actually happening, because everything is significant.

My heart shattered in pieces when that NPC guy throws their strawberry tarts.

Nice OP song. I'm a little bit surprised with the aspect ratio they use here. The visuals and animations are great. Compared to Hyouka, I think this adaptation might be more heavy in term of overall atmosfer, but the conversations are just the same vibe as Hyouka.

Anyway, did Kobato and that girl really dating? The synopsis doesn't seem it said that though. That guy might've mistaken them, but if they're really dating, damn.

I was wandering on youtube searching for new anime to watch, and found this title which actually made by Hyouka author 😯

First episode, I can feel the nostalgic feelings like back when I watched Hyouka.
Hope it will be as interesting as Hyouka.
Also, RIP Strawberry tart :(

Very beautiful animation quality. Seriously its amazing how animation quality is giving me goosebumps. If the MC was going to be a loner protagonist, It was definitely going to give the feelings of Hyouka. However, I have so much hopes regarding to this anime so yeah im going to give solid 10/10

RIP to those strawberry tarts. Really feel bad for Yuki, she has been waiting for it for a very long time.

And you know what, the location of this series is Gifu. yeah! it's the same Gifu from Hensara.

OP and ED have great visuals.
Looks like they used irl recordings for the ending theme.

I'm guessing the entire anime will be in 21:9 aspect ratio, interesting choice.
I trust Yonezawa's story, but I wonder how this adaptation will play out.

Fuck that random at the end. RIP Osani's strawberry tart. Justice will be served.

The heavy use of 3DCG characters, especially on closer shots, are somewhat awkward. If it were because of budget limits, I would say the result is pretty decent. Maintaining a great overall experience and leaving the money for the more important scenes is always a good idea.

The Konte (storyboard) are exceptional. So is the music. Many emotions are rendered extremely well.
Very expressive screenplay in the scene from 18:09 to 19:53.
The cut at 16:08 briefly includes the other character and then immediately switch back to the cut without in 16:12.
Kobato ran off screen in the cut at 21:12. After a few seconds of freeze, Kobato walked back into the screen.

The relations between Osanai and Kobato are incredible. It is surprising to see that while Osanai hid behind Kobato for most occasions, she chose to stand in front of Kobato and protect him at 15:25. Very impressive relations.

Looks somewhat promising. Pretty slow as an episode but was fairly decent overall with its mystery tones for its premiere. I didn't like Hyouka so my expectations weren't the highest for it but this was an alright episode with some nice cinematic quality to it. It hasn't obviously got the Hyouka expressive animation quality but it still looks really good in its detail and storyboarding and hey, Osanai's shy and somber tone is so much more watchable for me than Chitanda spewing annoying lines like a recorder being replayed over and over again with her curiosity. The more serious tone this has might work for me and 10 episodes might be sufficient without being stretched out for far too long. Will be cautious to see if this is genuinely good or like Hyouka, falls flat for me in a couple episodes.

I was going to start off by saying I wish KyoAni took charge of this instead and while there's still a small part of me that wished for it, I think the show is in good hands under the Staff working on this. Both the theme songs were accompanied by great visuals and the general quality during the episode was surprisingly high too, here's to hoping they'll be able to keep this up throughout!

As for the main plot of the show, it wasn't crystal clear from the first episode but it gave off vibes of geniuses trying to live out the ordinary life. It took a pretty roundabout way to address that but that's expected considering it's coming from the brains of the Koten-bu series. Yikes, those final few seconds with the crushed strawberry pies though and that dazed expression, I hope there's retribution to this, lol.

Starting off with a twisted attempt to propose, I wonder what's next in store for us.

Oh yea we might have AOTS here. A detective series with amazing production values? You can’t get enough of these. Anytime a show has gorgeous art and a letterbox effect I’m sold. A lot of people are likening it to hyouka, but since I haven’t seen that I don’t have the frame of reference. For me it gives off a mix of Kyokou, undead girl murder farce, suiri and mars red actually. Weird combination, but the art style and cinematography mixed with the detective aspect feel like those three shows.

I found things a little confusing at some points with how they show the MC in the suspect’s clothes as a way of recreating the “crime” scene, but once I got used to that it wasn’t too bad. I assume that’ll be a recurring method he uses to reconstruct and solve cases. The storyboarding and direction are beautiful and I love the muted aesthetic.

It’s cool this takes place in Gifu as well, same Gifu from Hensara last season so that city is getting a lot of free tourist promo as of late!

Nice introduction overall to the series with the first case being a rather harmless misunderstanding. Probably would’ve been easier for buddy to have just done a proper confession to Yoshiguci instead of taking her bag, but all’s well that ends well. Wish the best for them. Hopefully the story continues with the amazing visual storytelling like we saw in that river scene with the two leads. I love those flashy cuts with the backgrounds changing.

But RIP to the strawberry tarts that Osanai had been looking forward too all episode 😒 stayed after school and helped on that case for nothing smh.

Can’t wait for next episode

Wow. The direction, character animation, dialogue, backgrounds, ost, storyboarding, fruit tarts, everything was top notch. Even the 3d cars were integrated perfectly with the rest of the scenes. I didn't think that any other premiere could beat Elusive Samurai for me, but this was leagues better than that. It really feel's like KyoAni's Hyouka got a worthy successor. Currently, not enough people are watching this show so I hope this premiere has others checking it out. It would be too sad for such a great episode, and hopefully anime, remains a hidden gem.

Just like Hayouka.Although Oreki and Kobato's personalities might differ, their problem-solving method remains the same.

Funny enough I kept thinking to myself, this seems like Hyouka, and looked it up just now, deadass it's literally the same guy that made Hyouka πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€ Hopefully this anime builds up to something more grand/more serious. I'd rather not have a repeat of "hey lets solve this pointless mundane mystery this week that ultimately isn't that serious"

Absolute cinema, that looked so good. Lapin Track cooked. Loved the visuals in OP song and in general. The setting and story is quite similar to Hyouka with similar vibes. Both the protags seem nice and we got a short case to start the season which wasn't bad. But damn that ending made me sad, she was looking forward to those tarts so much. Btw they gonna leave us hanging on this ship too? Like come on man.

Hyouka is one of my favourite and Oreki x Chitanda being one of my absolute favourite couple in all anime. Never got to see their ship sail but hopefully this one will. Looks quite promising, excited for upcoming episode.

Wow. It's Hyouka but 1000 times more boring and without the insanely high quality art and movement of KyoAni. I'll keep hoping it gets better but it's clear that the animation quality will never exceed mediocrity. It won't get above a 5/10from me.

There’s a certain charm about going through the seasonal show list and just picking out shows based of the title and KV. (I don’t do that for every show but for some I do)

The website I used gave it those border things movies have. Idk if that was just on the website I used or not but combined that with the stellar animation it made this show look gorgeous and feel like a movie.

Overall this was a very strong first episode. Kobato and osanai have a really good dynamic as friends and I really like together. I hope they don’t flood this show with a bunch of obnoxious side characters. I genuinely would be happy if it’s just a show about these 2 for however many episodes.

I really like Osanai tho, she’s way smaller than I thought tho, when they stood together I was genuinely suprised. She’s adorable how she hides behind Kobato around others.

She’s also beautiful and has very pretty eyes.

Overall very strong start again. Another show this season giving me minor super cub vibes

Why did this feel like a cross between abstract art and psychedelic movie scenes πŸ˜‚

I enjoyed the whole "Sherlock Holmes" deduction part, and I hope they do more of that.

But the rest seemed a bit out there.

What a mean thing for the writers to pull on us, with all that waiting to leave the school, looking at the time, hoping they get there soon, happy there were two left, and then "splat", right in our face.

I hope the next episode involves that bike thief getting what is coming to him.

And do their eyes mean anything?
They both have uniquely designed eyes, is it just artistic choice?
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

I remember I had my problems with Hyouka, but someone remind me... was Hyouka also "SUPER CRINGE" like this?

I understand that author puts effort into making his histories "make sense", you can see that by the ending with the bicycle thief and ruined strawberry cakes, but unfortunately everything and everyone is just so artificial and stilted, with their "philosophies" and "philosoideas", that makes the phrase "Kindergarden Haruki Murakami" come to mind.

A waste of character design and animators.

So, obviously there are going to be a lot of comparisons to Hyouka, because they are both mystery shows, and they are both by the same author. Right away with this premiere, I see the similarities, the most obvious one being the "mottos". Where Oreki had his motto of 'If I don't have to do something, I won't, but if I have to, I'll do it quickly.", and Jougorou has his stances on being "ordinary". However, where Hyouka had more lively characters especially with Chitanda, Shoushimin feels much more mild and meek, though with a good sense of atmosphere and quietness, which I also enjoy. The visuals stood out to me as looking somewhat cinematic in its approach, with its use of space, soundtracks, and the aspect ratio, which is an approach that really liked, even if the animation isn't near the quality of Kyoto Animation's Hyouka.

Jougorou and Yuki's relationship feels very endearing to me already, because they understand one another without needing to vocalize it, due to their prior experiences with one another. Really looking forward to seeing their bond grow even more throughout this.

Am I sold on the mystery aspects? Not yet, but I'm quite optimistic about what this has in store for us. Likely a top pick for this season of anime.

We need some revenge for those strawberry tarts. That's the worst thing that could have happened. At least they didn't cut to Yuki being emotional or anything, because that would have been a heart sinker.
