I ask this as someone who just... really wants Mazinger and Getter to be more accessible. I am aware that Mazinger was originally brought over to America as Tranzor Z, and that sucked, and now, even Shin Getter is nigh impossible to find (legally) outside of rather expensive blu-rays, since it was taken off of retro crush. The original series for both Mazinger and Getter were foundational to a lot of the later content for each of them, but for English-speaking audiences, those may as well not exist. The only obvious route for Mazinger is Mazinger Edition Z and then Mazinger Infinity, or maybe Mazinkaizer Vs the general of darkness, and that's confusing as all hell!

Do you think there's any hope for the old content for these old robots to see the light of day ever again? Maybe VIZ could translate the original Mazinger manga, seeing as they run the Shonen Jump side of things?

I guess it's not really a big thing anymore, so it's time to move on.

Mecha fans were all over Brave Bang Bravern! last season, so you should probably check it out.

I think super robots will always "exist". but the same as it is now, we probably won't see them very often. 1 or 2 a year if we. And that's the high estimate.

@APolygons2 Bravern is actually one of the things that sent me on the rabbit hole of trying to get as much of Mazinger and getter as I could, only to find disappointment

West has never liked mecha much, Japan may become nostalgic for it right around now so there is hope.

Started interesting (more like a parody of super robot tho), finished as a total mess...I don't see it as a trend setter.

Don't think so, the classic mecha genre is too worn out.

@Zarutaku I see this sentiment a lot and I do not understand it since I still see new, good, mecha shows that come out every year or two. Witch from Mercury and Bravern as examples.

Unless you mean specifically super robots? Again I would argue Bravern, but it's a little bit of a stretch.

@Timeline_man Yea, I mean the "taking a seat in giant super robot" concept as a whole.

I know there's a hardcore fanbase who can't get enough of this stuff, but for the wider audience it doesn't seem to appeal that much anymore.

So I did a little research into a related topic, the sales of Super Robot Wars, specifically SRW30, the first game in a long time to come to "the west". According to Forbes, it sold over 19 million units relatively close to release, and classic super robots are a cornerstone of the franchise, so the audience isn't small, methinks.

While probably there will be still few Super Robot anime being made in the future, I don't think it would become popular anymore.

Even if there would be a popular anime with super robot element, I'm sure that anime would be full of ecchi or sexual fanservices to bait this era's watchers, it wouldn't be the super robot anime you veterans want.

If you're talking about remake of classic super robot titles, nope it wouldn't fit current era of nowadays animefan taste...

it needs to be edgy or have alot of half-naked girls :D

I mean... I guess Bravern fits that mold, but with dudes. Mazinger's more like a gag series though, and rather prudish as gag manga go at that.... Getter is cosmic horror, I don't think fanservice fits into that terribly well.... Well, there is a lot they could do with Getter Q or the Millions....

Honestly, though, I think that view of modern anime is rather... narrow minded. Sakamoto Days and Mashle gained some solid fanbases without being either extremely edgy or horny. Manga with horror concepts have proven their chances recently as well, with Chainsaw Man's popularity (up until Part 2, where people got fed up with Fujimoto's writing style).

I really think there's room for these classics. I mean, Go Nagai has something of a cult around him already. and he made Mazinger and Co-created Getter Robo. Frankly, they haven't been given a fair fight in the west for a long time, since Mazinger Infinity was screened at, like, 5 movie theaters, and Getter Robo Arc had basically no marketing.

Wait a minute, Grendizer U is literally a thing that's in production! So there is a chance for more to happen in the future regarding Mazinger!

If you analyze what happened to western films you understand that they are cultural factors of the historical period in which you live, this is the isekai anime era, a slightly decadent and disillusioned society that escapes from reality to take refuge in a fantasy world a bit like mmorpg video games (also very popular), In the 80s there was a positive feeling in mechatronic technological progress while now there are contrasting opinions also due to events in the world.
In my country they showed a lot of mecha anime on TV in the early 80s but I was too young to remember anything, I only remember the power rangers and I liked them a lot.
In the following years of my childhood I never came across a mecha on TV they completely disappeared from my country's TV in the 90s, when I started watching anime on my own again on the PC in 2006 I didn't care about mechas, I've seen some but it is not my thing just like Eureka 7 a nice anime but the mecha parts were the least interesting about it at least for me. However, I happen to talk to people just older than me about anime and they all speak well of mecha. But they are adults they don't watch anime anymore, very few of them would do it, there is very little audience to tempt the animators.

At least Mazinger and Grendizer are getting new stuff have a look at Great Mazinger he has been a punching bag ever since. As for Getter Robo it complicated as we never had a proper Getter anime adaptation.

This is why classic mecha are timeless classic stuff like Voltes V, Combattler V and Daimos focus on story not half naked girl to bait fans.

@SPTLayzner Yeah, Poor Tetsuya got his ass kicked in Infinity, and was barely in Edition Z (Even then he wasn't in the Great Mazinger)

In the west I doubt it, unless it's Eva,Gurran Laggan or Code Geass. Everything else is very niche and will only appeal to the diehards. Well at least we are getting Grendizer U.

@Scyfher Things being niche as justification for it not coming feels like circular logic.

It won't come to the west because it's niche, and it's niche because it doesn't come to the west.

@Timeline_man there has been tons of Mecha that have come to the west and it's still a niche genre besides the 3 that I mentioned. Look at Gundam super popular in Asia and the UK, but in North America it's not and most average anime watchers thinks it is a sub genre for the Mecha genre.

The American Gundam fandom is actually sizeable for a mecha show, so I don't know where you got that idea.

@TheMechaManiac I think Toonami really kick started it in the west. At least for my generation. The first big one once streaming became possible was probably 00.

and there's the thing, I'm pretty sure a lot of how super robots are seen in the west comes down to the fact that it's never been marketed particularly well.
