Sangatsu no Lion S2 is a pretty obvious answer here, it was so much better than S1 and S1 was already incredible.

Haikyuu S1 is already 10/10 for me but S2 was even better. It was 20/10 for me. Especially last few episodes it gave me goosebumps. And then S3 is even better. S4 despite having animation/art style problem was really great as well (Hope Movie releases soon in my country).

My second pick will be Vinland Saga. S1 is a masterpiece but S2 is an art which you can't describe in words.

3D kanojo real girl
Aquarion Evol
JoJo part 4
K-On Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai got even better in season 3
Shakugan no Shana though season 3 was weak compared to season 2.
Fruit of evolution
Food wars especially season 2-3 as a whole are grandiose up to the arc in Hokkaido.
Sword Art online but I can't tell for season 3.
To love Ru darkness
To aru kagaku no railgun S(that to this day it's still my favorite arc of all I watched:sisters arc)

+1 for Clannand After Story.

Also Little Busters! Refrain.

Ef - A Tale of Melodies. It's a prequel story, but aired after the 1st series.

Kinmoza. We got Kuzehashi sensei in it. and a little more honoka too.

Bang dream, S2 changes to a new mc switching between useless annoying former mc and kinda likable new mc and the other new bands chars are better. s3 continues in the same vein.

Some that come to mind just quickly skimming through my list

Clannad After Story feels like a pretty obvious shout with its emotional highlights in its latter parts

Little Busters Refrain as well for the same reason

Kingdom also gets much better from season 3 onwards, partially because the arcs are good but mostly because the production value just really improved

To LOVE-Ru Darkness is far superior to the original across the board, much more lewd but also just better characters in the spotlight and general story direction

Fate/Kaleid goes from being a pretty average mahou shoujo series in the original to a classic ecchi show in 2wei, and then suddenly to a much more serious but surprisingly good story in 3rei, so that was an interesting double evolution

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu, although it's all baked into one entry on MAL is really 4 consecutive seasons, and there I think the 2nd and 3rd one are the best parts of the story

Gintama similarly also gets much better from the 2011 season onwards. Granted it also occasionally dips again but in general the story really took off after the first 200 ep entry and so did the production value

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, while always solid, the 2nd season is where all the answer arcs are presented and it's just the more memorable part of it overall

K-On is also mainly famous for what it did in its 2nd season

Utawarerumono only gets better with each consecutive entry. The original is decent but compared to what the 2nd and especially the 3rd season does it's a different ballpark

Kingdom and World Trigger went from slightly above average anime hampered by the mediocre production value of their first seasons to some of the very best, as they rightfully deserved.

Not necessarily drastic improvements, but i enjoyed them more than their prequels

In no particular order
  • Demon Slayer s2
  • My Hero Academia s2
  • Spy x Family part 2
  • Attack On Titan s3 part 2
  • Full Metal Panic Fumoffu (if it counts as a sequel? I count it as s2)
  • Owari no Seraph s2
  • Dragon Ball Z
  • Re:zero s2
  • Sword Art Online Alicization (s3)
Honerable mention Blue Exorcist s3, so far the pace seems to've improved a lot, but it's a bit early to tell how good it is overall

- School Rumble Ni Gakki (more absurd funny situations, better OP and especially EDs, survival game arc was dark and badass, extended screentime for supporting characters, my best girl Mai Ootsuka receiving a almost full magical girl episode. Beautiful.)
- Full Metal Panic Fumoffu (i wanted so hard a side series with only funny situations instead of action and damn, they delivered soon and it was satisfying... even if for me the franchise in general could have already ended after Fumoffu itself or at least making it longer with not adapted manga chapters)
- Komi Can't Communicate season 2 (Ayami Sasaki. It's already enough for me. Ok, except for her, the school trip arc was so interesting, i think horrible yandere girl had a little less scenes overall, and some of the details told for School Rumble Ni Gakki count here as well even if the OPs including season 1 are still better at least for me than the respective and still good EDs. Too bad i'm heavily convinced at this point that the anime series has already ended for good.)
- Zombieland Saga Revenge (YUUGIRI. i'm not even a person that enjoys period pieces stories, but when she finally had her backstory revealed and ended with Saga Jihen song, she skyrocketed into my top 10 favorite characters of all time, and was already my favorite cast member since day one. Also, great theme of revenge as told in the title, badass OP song, yet another badass song at the end of episode 1, great ending even if i'm asking if the film is actually going to happen now).

to a lesser extent, i think to have enjoyed all the second seasons of all generations of Love Live a little more the opening ones, but Nijigasaki's made me feel the biggest relief when the anime counterpart of Lanzhu turned out to be less... troublemaker than the mobile game one. And the rest of it with the sub-units introduction was still great.

Kingdom only gets better after each season, it starts off with such yanky animations in S1, it only improves afterwards.

Many great second seasons, but a S2 that knocked it out of the park compared to S1... *thinking*

LMAO ofc! Seeying Bleach first & then this was my best anime experience ever.

Edens Zero S2, S1 was great, but it was the start of a new adventure, so naturally, like in any RPG, you start with the main character and start adding new characters to the team. So it takes a while before the ball really starts rolling. S1 was great, but S2 starts with a full roster of teammembers and does what it does best, going on a adventure in space!

Bakuman S2, S1 was awesome. Often it's really hard to be better the the first S when it was especially good. Herein Bakuman, S2 really strifes to be the equal of S1. It even tries to go the extra mile to keep the audience engaged & interested. Loved S2 and even S3 was able to repeat what S2 did, it slapped hard, cause S3 brought the final conclusion to the story. Great serie, loved it 10/10! 1 Of the few series, where more seasons didn't lose in quality at all, consistent high quality in every season, so yeah this definitely deserves to be mentioned here.

Log Horizon S2. Don't ask me why specifically, cause I really don't remember the little details as to why I rate one higher then the other. Apparently I gave Log Horizon an 8 and S2 a 9, S3 a mere 7.

Same thing for Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage. I gave S1 an 8 and S2 a 9.

White Album S2, I remember nothing of this serie lmao, gave S2 an 8, while S1 got a 7. Probably cause as a newbie back then, I appreciated to see the story continue?

Either Steins;Gate 0, The Quintesential Quintuplets S2 or Kaguya Sama S2. Also I would consider Vinland Saga S2, Demon Slayer S2, Fate Zero S2, JJK S2, etc. If you consider the Rebuild Evangelion movies a sequel then they would be up there as well.

@epidemia78 Well, I don't really believe it to be a downgrade. I have both SG and SG0 as 10s. I still give an edge to the og, but I don't think SG0 is that far behind. I also know most people don't think as I do.

The Promised Neverland Season 2

Don't know why everyone hates it, it was a step up from the original season and built on its themes further and into more detail. The city at the end was cool, I can relate cause I also love cities. My last time in the city, I blacked out and found myself in a psychiatric hospital lol. Good times. Anyone who doesn't enjoy Promised Neverland S2 is clearly deranged and can't appreciate good art when they see it, instead thinking that shows like Attack on Mid and Fullmetal Alchemist: Pisshood are better.

Don't @ me, you know you're wrong and save yourself the time.

Baki son of ogre S2
Monogatari series 2nd season (I guess it counts as a S2.)
Mushoku Tensei S2 (Loved it more than S1)

JJK S2-Its a hard decision to put it here. It's equal to to S1 in my heart, has more episodes with unstable qualities/production and weaker artstyle in certain episodes, but it does contain better plot. Imma say its a good S2.

When I heard that "Megalo Box" was getting a second season, I thought it was unnecessary, but then the second season came along and knocked me out with how good it was. I prefer it much more than the first season. It elevated that series the same way the second season did for "Vinland Saga."

In all practicality even if it's classified on MAL as a 'side story', "Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu" is a classic example of one of the best sequels I have ever seen in Anime. I actually love "Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu" more than the 1st season.

Yama no Susume Second Season is a huge step up from the previous season (which i think is kinda ok). The first season's duration is way too short and it feels like it only serves as an introduction to the characters and setting (which i understand why people would be disappoint by it), and the second season fixed that problem by increasing the duration and doubling the episode, giving the character and the story more space to breath.

In terms of the sequel(s) that were the biggest stepups:
-Clannad: After Story
-Revue starlight the movie [The anime was good but the movie was just, left me flabbergasted]

Sequel(s) that built on the first season:
Fate/zero season 2
Vinland saga season 2
Fruits basket: The final
Sangatsu Season 2 [how did they improve on something thats almost perfect]
Owarimonogatari Season 2 (perfect conclusion to the franchise)

Shoutouts to:
