| Are there any action/adventure fantasy anime with aesthetics and storytelling similar to 1980s sword and sorcery films and comics, like Conan The Barbarian, Red Sonja, Deathstalker etc.? Iron Age-inspired dark fantasy, full of scantily clad barbarian warriors with impractical melee weapons, hideous creatures, evil cults, blood and gore, gratuitious nudity, the whole shebang. Any fitting recommendations appreciated. Keep in mind, however, that I'm looking to get the whole package. I don't want a generic JRPG-esque setting, that features a barbarian character, or something like Berserk, where it's dark and violent, but otherwise inspired by the medieval times. I want Boris Vallejo's fantasy works, but in anime form. Thanks in advance. |
| I assume you already have seen Fire and Ice by Ralph Bakshi While it possibly exists in Japan or China or Korea I think this seems unlikely that kind of fantasy imported into Japan and popular enough to get a full anime. I tried looking for prehistoric set stuff for you using various sites MAL, AniList, Anime Planet, Anime News Network Encyclopedia and basically all there really isnt anything I came across yet but shounen and kid's shows from the 70s from what I could see. For example this which i managed to find by the cover image but im not sure if it would really come off mature enough to you from a modern perspective but maybe it's alright? Havent seen it just checked out the OP and some clips on youtube. I assume you already have seen Fire and Ice by Ralph Bakshi
While it possibly exists in Japan or China or Korea I think this seems unlikely that kind of fantasy imported into Japan and popular enough to get a full anime. I tried looking for prehistoric set stuff for you using various sites MAL, AniList, Anime Planet, Anime News Network Encyclopedia and basically all there really isnt anything I came across yet but shounen and kid's shows from the 70s from what I could see. Although, honestly, I was hoping for a show, not a movie. It's more like a twisted, fantasy version of the late Antiquity/early Medieval era, so around 1st-8th Century, maybe a bit earlier, but definitely not prehistoric times. |

Ah yeah been quite a while since Ive seen Conan the Barbarian so just had a rough idea of what you're looking for.... anyway you said Iron-Age so i focused on that mainly since Iron-Age is often considered last stage of prehistory before writing finally developed. However anthropologists really only use the term for specific civilizations because things didnt develop same everywhere. China for example had no Iron Age. Hmm Tv Tropes website put Claymore on the Sword and Sorcery page for some reason. I am a bit hesitant to recommend it. It goes downhill hard once it gets to the point it turned anime original from running out of content. Before that point though it was fantastic. I dont particularly remember any sorcery in it though if that matters but it's been years since i saw it and have no recollection of the plot just the epic sword fights. I havent had the chance yet to pick up the manga to see where the story actually went. |

| Guin Saga is worth checking out, it has that old school type of storytelling, as the source novels were written in the 80s. The only thing is that the blood and gore are censored. |

| The most similar setting in Japan would be the Ezo or Emishi in pre-Imperial Japan. Sadly there are not any anime known to me that would show that setting. The only thing I know is that in the manga for Noragami they meet a side character (Arahabaki) whose backstory is being a left-over god from that era. He only briefly mentions it and his home in the god world looks a bit themed like it. That's all. |

| Highly doubt anything will ever match Conan, it was a very western piece of work and a (great) product of a very different time. I've heard good things about the webtoon Barbarian Quest, but I haven't tried it yet. |
