The life of a slave is truly complicated....

Interesting to see someone like Gardar being part of that lifestyle. The psychology of this episode/anime continously sets the bar and imo really done once again. It's crazy what certain characters had to go through to be where they are in the present timeline.y

Arnheid really wants to see Gardar but she has to go through Snake but she found out a way to meet Gardar. But, damn that meeting was so emotional. I felt so bad there. But, Gardar wasn't going to take everything as it was. He took down another one of Snake's men. That poor guy who was being soft on Arnheid ended up having the worst fate. But, looks like all of them are after him now. There's no escape.

On the other hand, Thorfinn has to carry the burden of all the people he killed and now he finally remembers the words of Leif of the land without war and slavery. Einar and Thorfinn talk about a world without violence which is inevitable. But, my goodness, what an episode. It was so beautiful. Looks like the AOT staff that was involved popped off in this Vinland episode. A great and beautiful episode directed by Tokio Igarashi and storyboarded by Shingo Uchida. The corrections from Manabu Akita were visible as well. Incredible episode. Wow.

Being the caring wife Arnheid was, and is, she really couldn’t help but go to where Snake’s men held Gardar captive. But hey not like Snake wanted her to, though there he went somewhere else and here she managed to get through his men someway, and tended to Gardar’s wounds. Though Gardar being the beast himself, the moment he sensed a chance, he fucking grabbed that with both of his hands. Fucking decimated everyone around and even had Arnheid cut his ropes up, which means he’s now a wild free monster once again, though earning Snake’s rage that way. There’s only hell awaiting him now.

I feel Einar. He genuinely wanted to help Arnheid in reuniting her with Gardar, but there’s only a few things he could do, as a slave. And Thorfinn being that person who knows whatever he feels more than anyone, shared his thoughts about that dream he has, about making a nation free of wars and slaves, unreachable by any country and sailors, the nation where people can live without fear and with freedom. Though it may seem a pipe dream to many ears, but indeed a place like that does exist, as Thorfinn always heard from Leif as a kid.

Foreshadowing done right. Though for anything around Gardar and Arnheid, it’s only going to get worse from here on, until it hits the absolute bottom. It's just a series of misfortunes from here on.

In the sky-laden incoming storm, Arnheid wanting to see her husband Gardar and tend to his wounds, and thanks to one of Snake's retainers being foolishly bought by her charm, she is able to see him. Gardar, being full or regret after abandoning both his wife and their newborn son Hajlti, the realization of a broken family such as this, both shared the burden equally as much. Since the retainer was the one that brought Arnheid here, he's the sole responsibility...which he got bitten dead by Gardar, and Arnheid having to make a choice between life and death of a trepidatious escape.

With Snake having known of the situation that both Arnheid and Gardar escaped, there is still some distance where he could not have gone very far, and this is Snake's breaking point. Back to Einar and Thorfinn, both of them contemplating about freedom and eliminating war and slavery altogether, it's a hard call since the Norsemen were going at this for quite a long time, with Thorfinn's sin amassing of the people he killed in his lifetime. The hellish war that never seems to end, to end it would be a massive dream.

With husband and wife on the loose, the inevitable is also known to the slaves. This is nothing but trouble for all...

Absolutely stunning episode, so many beautiful shots and character expressions. From Gardar and Arnheid expressing their grief and regret together as well as escaping, to Thorfinn and Einar contemplating the cause behind war and aiming to find a place where it doesn't exist and to also be rid of the dead that haunt Thorfinn.
Snake looks like he means absolute business in killing Gardar, 5 of his men being killed definitely pissed him off.

Masterpiece episode.

Can a world without war and slavery really exist?

A poignant and expertly crafted Vinland Saga episode as we’ve come to expect. Full of emotional ups and downs from Arnheid and Gardar to Thorfinn and Einar’s conversation. One of the most important Vinland episodes as Thorfinn remembers Leif’s tale of Vinland, a land with no war or slavery.

Uchida shingo did an amazing job with the story boarding and Tokio’s directing on this episode was superb.

Can’t help but feel bad for the guard who let Arnheid see gardar, cost him his life.

Thorfinn talking about his past sins always makes me cry. The burden of guilt he now carries is immense, trying to atone for the pain he caused. I loved the imagery or that moment with all the corpses clinging to Thorfinn trying to pull him down. He must take them somewhere peaceful. Thorfinn and Einar have some of the most thought provoking conversations this season. Continuing their thought from some episodes ago about stopping war and slavery. How could you stop those things from happening in the world. Well war usually leads to massive amounts of slavery, so if you stop war slavery will decrease overwhelmingly. Stopping war however is tough considering its how Norse men have lived for centuries. Its engrained in the way they live their lives, fathers raise sons to fight and go off on war ships. Stopping how people have lived for a long time isn't easy. But there is a place it could be done, maybe over in Vinland they could. Thorfinn finally remembering what Lief said to him about it all those years ago. Going there wouldn't be easy, they'd need a lot of people and a lot of resources to build a new nation in a far away place.

A beautiful dream to have however things in front of them are pressing. Arnheid giving in and feeding Gardar after the apologize to each other finally being able to talk. Gardar ripping that dudes throat out was disgusting. Chopping the other guards up to bits in the rain. Snake is pissed and on man hunt for Gardar. He can't have gotten far with two fresh stab wounds.

twice !!! fucking 2nd time snake's men underestimate garder and get what they deserve for their mistake.

for the love of God snake should either get a new crew and tell these fuckers to stop being mercenaries or whatever the fuck they are and rot .

seriously man ik it's for the plot and whatever happens further is Hella fire like the whole season so far but they're just too dumb to be in snake's crew . I mean garder was strong enough to slice a man in half and wow they believed arnheid , his WIFE wouldn't help him escape.

overall peak episode, peak animation and an emotional episode 🥹. Those bits of thorfinn's past make me wonder if the entire show was done by mappa would it have made it more darker 🤔 no hate to wit S1 was peak but just a thought (before someone calls me mappasexual or something)

An intense and introspective episode

Arnheid requests an audience with Gardar to tend to his wounds, and is rejected.

Snake goes out to see the mistress, and Arnheid requests the one remaining security guy to see Gardar. He grants permission and Arnheid goes to Gardar.

Pretty emotional conversation between Arnheid and Gardar, which takes a dark turn as Gardar kills the guard. Fast forward to Snake's return, and everyone is dead. Gardar and Arnheid have escaped.

Fast forward to Thorfinn and Einar's scene. Both have a pretty deep conversation about war and slavery. How war is the prime factor that leads to slavery, how one needs to defend their home, how one can escape the hellish cycle. Thorfinn almost gave up on a 'swordless' life, when he remembers about Vinland. He tells about a faraway land free from war to Einar.

Fox and his men approach Thorfinn and Einar's shack to investigate Arnheid and Gardar's presence if they are hiding there.

Pretty good episode, 5/5. Preview of next episode looks insane. Are we getting Thorfinn vs Snake Round 2?!

Basically what you'd expect would happen when Arnheid meets Gardar would happen, happened: They escaped.

But judging by the next episode preview, there's still a chance that both of them survived.

Einar and Thorfinn during the end of the episode be like, "What are we, some kind of Vinland Saga?"

I am so touched by the conversation of Thorfinn and Einar. War and slavery is something you can’t really get rid of since the Vikings or Norns are around to cause bloodshed. As for Gardar and his wife along with what just happened. Oh, hell. Dude. Snake’s men really gotten to relaxed or even complacent on their jobs. And because of those fools mistake they allowed a monster to run amok. Arnheid oh man. I was hoping she be telling the truth but looks like she couldn’t do so. All that she could do now is just cry in sorrow and grief of what happened especially what’s happening right now. T_T

Thorfinn and Einar's sleepless morning was such a meaningful scene; after discussing Nordic society, atoning for one's past and the necessity of protection, Einar suggests "somewhere that is not here", an idea Thorfinn was once familiar with.
I really like that part where Thorfinn recalls the interaction he had with the Norwegian slave Hordaland in s. 1 ep. 8 (ch. 2) .

This was quite an important episode, despite it still being a precursor to more conflict ahead with Snake and his subordinates. Arnheid desperately wanted to see Gardar, and one mistake by Badger led to him getting bitten to death by Gardar. It's incredibly tough to watch, because while it seems like Snake and his subordinates are the antagonists right now, they have their reasons, and Arnheid has her own reasons to act the way that she did. The whole situation around them is just so bleak.

The excellent direction of the episode really shone through when Thorfinn talked about "Vinland" and if it's possible to eliminate war and slavery from this world. It's a really tough question, because it seems so easy to just say that everyone living in harmony would be the ideal way for the world to function, but to protect this ideal, sometimes, violence may be needed, and that spirals into more bloodshed. Thorfinn and Einar are going through a lot right now, but I'm glad this show takes its time to let it breathe and develop the characters properly. More darkness is on the horizon, and I will definitely continue to enjoy witnessing it each and every week.

I really liked this episode because it gave what we missed this season: an endgoal. I’ve personally been enjoying this season very much so far but I did miss a feeling where the show was going and now that Thorfinn is going to be a free I know what direction the show is going to go: westward. To America. I’m already looking forward to the reunion with Leif.

Now it has finally begun where I feel Thorfinn will finally begin to driving the story and having an end goal in mind. He has been mostly on being dragged along by the events around aka reactive which is quite natural given he is going through a healing process psychologically, but he has finally broken through to the other end of it I feel and has a direction of where he wants to go. Big ambitious dreams but hey, what is life without being a bit ambitious 😎

Agree. She's doing a stellar job in this most dramatic of parts.

Arnheid cut the ropes and Gardar escaped and Snake is ready to kill him if he finds him. The talk between Einar and Thorfinn and them actually thinking about what they can do to end war and slavery. I knew the Vinland scene was coming, made me tear up. I hope the retainers don't get physical towards Einar and Thorfinn because they didn't do shit but it doesn't seem the same for the next episode preview though.

It's amazing how much this show makes me feel for the cast, including Snake, which, honestly, would be a simple villain in any other interpretation of the same story. But here you can see how much he is trying to prevent the worst scenario from happening. Even if he's certainly one the of the "bad guys", so to speak, you can clearly see how conflicted the whole situation leaves him after every new development.

His job is making sure the slaves obey their masters, isn't it? That's a pretty morally questionable position to be in. I mean... Just doing his job doesn't really cut it after the nuremberg trials.
In my culture his job has a name and it is most definetly an insult around here.

Welp as expected things didn't go smoothly and now Arnheid and Gardar are on the run.

Loved the conversation between Thorfinn and Einar, which touched on things like Thorfinn's past regrets to more ambitious dreams like getting rid of war and slavery. Much easier said than done, unfortunately. I'm glad Thorfinn remembered Vinland and how that could be their only hope of establishing the life of peace they desire. Though, I'm pretty doubtful that it would be possible to just avoid conflict entirely regardless of where you relocate.

I'm glad there's a glimmer of hope for Arnheid and her husband but judging by the preview she didn't even run away with him? I'd love them both to escape and live free somewhere but I know better than expect such a happy ending from this show lol.
