Just finished watching this and although there are questions about the ending, I'm more intrigued about what the significance of the

I think he explained it in the movie. The picture only exists at this time and because it doesn't exist in the future he wanted to see it once because the future is so bleak or so it was. Sorry it's been a while since I've seen the movie.

Yeah that was explained, im more asking like does it have like a direct connection to him like it was drawn by one of his ancestors or it means something to him? Like why that exact painting?

As far as the movie goes, I don't know if there's any insight beyond that,
but it simply just correlates with its time, as the aunt explains it; a beautiful piece at a time of war and famine, which seems like is what's happening in the future.

Thus, for whatever reason, he basically wants to look at this "inspirational" painting at his time of war and famine, just like that painting was done in its own time of war and famine.

@waalex11 But why would he care about a random painting he has no connection to?

It's been years again, so I don't remember who or what exactly he learns that painting from (a family member, maybe), but I guess it's a desperate craving to feel what others have from a similar painting in his time that he's learned about.

He wants to feel inspired by that iconic painting that spoke hope after a dark time of war.
Because he feels hopeless in his time with no source of hope/inspiration from any media/material by anyone.

It's kind of fucking weird I admit...
All that. Wasting money and time to go to the damn past for one painting. Albeit they don't have good paintings or whatever in his time, but still. Until he made those friends and fell in love, but anyway.

Again, maybe there's Japanese interviews or a novel from the creator elaborating on all of this.

@waalex11 Thanks for explaining, but I think I'm gonna settle on it being a bad plot point adaption and hope it's explained somewhere in the novel. I feel like that reason is too shallow for it to inspire him to venture back in time but who knows, maybe I'm overthinking it.

Ah! So it is originally from a novel. I forgot.
I'm just speaking on assumption based on how the anime felt to my interpretation.

I understand though.
I'd hope as well that the novel has an in-depth better complex reason, because it is pretty ridiculous taking the risk of going back in time for one fucking painting, lol.

I get it, but it is odd.
In fact, it's kinda so dumb that I forgot that plot point twice until my latest rewatch, lol.

@waalex11 All good. Maybe I'll check out the novel sometime and settle this once and for all lol
