Very disappointed that the Captain survived.

While I wouldn't go that far, the last few episodes turned Captain from my favorite character to my least favorite, mostly for that one scene. I mean, sure, we know he's the steely, do-whatever-it-takes type, and in that light it was vaguely in character, but to have something like that happen on a kids' show is just baffling to me. Up until then Gorg had a light-hearted sensibility about it, but...yeah.

I still liked the show overall, but that and the weak ending left me with a bad taste.

Captain remained my favorite character despite his outburst, it was quite disturbing but not exactly out of character for him and after all she did try to kill everyone numerous times. She is lucky to have survived the encounter above all really.

The ending however was disappointing overall because it didn't really settle that much, and there was zero explanation for how the island survived an ICBM onslaught capable of erasing a continent other than hinting "must have been Manon". It also kind of hinted at some pretty solid sequel potential that was never realized.

Enjoyed the show very much despite it not having the best ending, one of my new favorites for 80s mecha.

The thing is even if you think Lynx's actions may have warranted that kind of treatment, he still set everyone on the island up to die. And then everyone forgives him because what, he gave Yuu a slight pep talk.

Still It was a fairly decent show, I liked the nature of Gorg's and Yuu's relationship, I've never seen anything like it in a mecha show before.

I was so disappointed by the scene that's being discussed in this thread, especially since nobody at any point confronted him about it. It just got swept under the rug. I feel like its primary function was to make Lynx and by extension Rod sympathetic to the viewers so that we'd accept their redemption despite the fact that all of their actions in the 20-something episodes earlier had been selfish, horrible, and caused the deaths of countless people.

A much as I would like to say I liked this series. I have serous grievances with it. The pacing was slow, I like the first few episode leading up too the island but once the gang got back together when yuu found Gorg for the first time felt like there was a lot waisted time. The stuff between that and ep 16 were they met Manon is mostly a blur and other problems.

Remember the giant sea robot that attacked the there ship that gorg saved Yuu from and popped up again episodes later. remember them what was the story with those things, it like the writers were making stuff as they were going along or something.

Such as the last few episode were the conflicted could've been avoided. Apart from the main cast no one had a reason to stay on the island at all once they said they nuking the place. We never saw Manon saving the island from the nukes and his people dying that lead him to the realisation its over. there race is finished as is and the few that fled long ago that he tried to kill, are what's keeping them around in a new form and is there future now. It happened all of scream and we hear of it from him after words with the yuu and they could have fit it in as I felt they had plenty of cut and trimmed. Such as Manan calling off his attack and asking Yuu to following his voice. That time could have gone to him and just him.

Its a shame cause there things I liked. The big antagonist Manan who I feel didn't get the right amount of screen time to develop him, still is an understandable foe, who wasn't really evil just doing what he thought was the right thing for his people survive.

Shame there thing I liked: The look of New York, Love the look of Gorg. Despite it being a mecha is more of adventure series with the 'tune in next time same GORG time same GORG channel' showing at the end of each cliff hanger episode that made me want to watch more. I was liking retro influences the robocop inspired evil Megacorporation. But its all held back with an unrefined script. Real shame.

Overall I thought it was pretty good, awesome animation, especially all the Gorg fighting scenes, great characters, though I agree the ending was kind of weak. I guess the above posters missed when the other countries explained their missiles had been blocked by a energy shield that was clearly shown to be activated by Manon. My problem was more that it was too spread out and not coherently explained when Yuu and Manon meet for the final time what happened to his people. It was his fighting Gorg that triggered earthquakes that reactivated the dormant volcano where his people were, with the lava killing them. After waiting 30,000 years for his plan to succeed his stubbornness caused it to fail and he finally realized he was wrong when the guy who left actually did succeed by leaving descendants.
Also it made no sense for them all to stay, did they all become suicidal? They had more than enough time for Manon to explain he could protect them and let Yuu tell everyone that instead of making them all seem resigned to dying when they could have left.
As for the captain, once he revealed he was a CIA stooge I had no problem with him roughing up Lynx (though it did get excessive) the scene was obviously meant to show Rod still cared for her more than the island. But him surrendering and staying made zero sense. These are mercenaries who have been trying to kill you for a while now, why would you think they wouldn't put a bullet in your head, they had no use for you. They should have at least made it so they thought they could get him to get the governments to call off the nuclear strike or something. Him doing all that for money and then not keeping Lynx a hostage until he made it to a plane so he could leave and enjoy that money was really head scratchingly stupid. Almost as much as Rod and Lynx later letting him go, what all these "bad" people are all suddenly welp let bygones be bygones, no hard feelings. I tried to kill you, you beat the crap out of me. Huh? Were they "thanking" him for getting them back together?

Great show overall with a good cast and an amazing attention to detail but it was about six episodes too long and everything started going downhill after Manon went crazy.

There was a lot of illogical events after that point that hampered my enjoyment. Especially the idea that it was somehow "immoral" to nuke an island full of giant indestructible robots bent on wiping out humanity... I could write a pretty long list of other things that bothered me like how between episodes Lynx just magically healed from being beat up. She should have been in an infirmary not having fun with her boyfriend.

This show reminds me a lot of Future Boy Conan but it's not as good. I'd rate it a 7.5 if I could.

7/10

Enjoyed it. Artwork, voice cast, scenery, music… all top notch. No regrets watching it.
I'm not disappointed in it for being bad, I'm disappointed in an action fest mostly, despite easily having the potential to be so much more than it was.

There were some many open questions:
Why are Aroi and Sarah coming with the cast at the end? (they and all other islanders lacked development, a shame as Aroi and Sara were such cute and fun couple)?
Why wasn't Argos used in the last third of the show? Why did the Captain have to change character back and forth? (in-show reason is weak) What was the point of having Dr. Wave, Doris and Tomenik in the show when they are barely used and not maturing? What happened to all the GAIL people (Rod's grandfather, crew that flew the island first...). Why are the sea creatures out there, drawing attention to Manon and the island? What did the Hotsumatsu (old tribal leader) really know? Why mention the guy that caused a split in Manon's people by name (Zenon’s friend that married a human) if he's just there as part of a 5 minute explanation scene at the end? What did GAIL really do to Yuu's father, why didn't we learn more about him? And so much more...
Few of these are serious issues, but it just added up towards the end. For an action adventure show, there was a but too much meat to the story, and for a well... deeper story, it was too casual.

So unfortunately, I believe Gorg is best enjoyed it for what it is, enjoying the stuff that happens onscreen, not thinking too deep about it afterwards.

I'm not a fan of calling for sequels when there's no need for them, but considering some tech that was shipped off the island (e.g. Dr. Wave as well as GAIL had parts of the sea creatures) and many unanswered questions, a sequel would have been nice to have.

So what did we get??
Yuu in the tightest 1980s shorts.
Doris being pathetic, shouting Yuu for at least half the episodes.
Short explanation why Yuu was picked by Gorg.
The Dr not really doing much all the way through.
Why the Bombs had no impact at all, not even any fallout.
But, i still enjoyed most of it, so Good, that's all.

Decent ending, a little bittersweet but hopeful as expected. My only complaint is how they brushed off the missile shield. Did it also magically erase all the radiation from the immediate surrounding water too? Cuz a dozen nukes sure sounds like a bunch of 3-eyed fish for the next 30k years.

Overall, the show was good but not exceptional. The story had a lot going for it, like a mix of The Goonies and Journey to the Center of the Earth, and the Iron Giant, but they really stretched it thin going for 26 eps, though I don't know how well they could've managed with only 13. The first 2-3 eps were superb, really setting the bar for a grand adventure, but then it lulled while Gorg just moseyed along. The action parts were alright but only truly shined when Gorgamania ran wild over everybody. And that's part of the problem, as Gorg being a semi-mindless golem just wasn't appealing enough. It might've been better if Yuu wasn't a disgrace to Japanese heritage and could actually pilot it.

Lady Lynx and the Cougar Connection were also such a waste of potential. I liked the revelation of her and Rod being former lovers and that they made amends, but she was practically nothing in the grand scheme. There should have been more back and force with them against Gail as well as the main group.

In fact, all the characters were useless except for the Captain, and his rogue turn was a nice surprise since nobody else was bringing anything of interest to the table.

7.5 see you next Gorg time, same Gorg channel /10
