Hilarious how some people can't stand based characters like Ataru. Another reason to enjoy the return of Urusei Yatsura, it's bringing something unconventional to the seasonal landscape.

Kamiya Horisho is fitting the character almost too well and I can't wait for Sawashiro as Sakura-sensei.

David Pro succeeded at adjusting the character designs to 2022.

A rather great start for this remake, even tho it still can't match the charm of the OG series.

This is idiotic. Dude, it's 2022. It looks and sounds like the opening of a modern anime. They're not going to have an opening sound like something that aired over 40 years ago. Be realistic.

I said a dumb Tik Tok video, not a modern song. The opening is just more soulless, low effort trendy bullshit. The original's opening and song were much more creative, original and charming.

You can't really compare the iconic opening by Kouji Nanke with the new one. Kouji Nanke is an exceptional animator with a great sense of timing and classic squash & stretch animation with abstract backgrounds, but Shingo Natsume is also highly regarded in the industry and among fans for his high production value openings and great genga cuts. The new opening gets a lot of praise, you hating it (which is fine btw, to each its own) are in the minority.

Dude is probably just to biased to see that the 2022 opening is better than the original one. Yeah it might have been good for the era but times have changed and what is considered good then is not what is considered good now.

Not much anime make me laugh, but the comedy in this anime is pretty top notch. The pacing is great, and the romance is sprinkled in very finely. There has been nothing to hate about it so far!
As long as the pacing isnt to fast (which is a possibility) I do think this anime will be one of the best if not the best anime of the season. I understand having to censor certain parts because what was acceptable in 1981 is not what is acceptable today. Other than that this first episode was *chefs kiss*

Totally disagree here. Kouji Nanke's anime openings and endings for UY, Ranma or Mrs. Pepperpot, which he singlehandedly animated all by himself, still hold up today if you have an eye for animation and creative artistry.

Very weird to hear Aragai's voice coming from another character. Aside from that, show is funny even for someone like me who's not into ecchi stuff, though I'm not sure that's how this would be described. I mostly heard of the original material being described as a sex comedy, which definitely seems correct as humor is based on the MC being kinda a sleazeball and the alien princess seeking to keep him for herself despite his reservations. Pacing felt slightly rushed, but didn't mind as it got to the meat of the show faster.

Never heard of the original series but this was such a chaotic first episode.
You can also kind of tell how old the original is with the way the mc and girls act towards each other.

I didn't feel like this would be something I would be really into even in its original form. Inuyasha was more my speed than romcoms with old perverted humor. However, I will give it a fair chance since they went through the trouble of modernizing the animation, and so far, it's alright. I have no idea how they will keep this concept fresh without it beiing repetitive.

Honestly I liked how it kept in pace with the manga version of events for a bit. But my only critiques were the toning down of violence and the topless scene. I just hope they don’t neuter the series even more. I’d like to just see UY as UY.

The foundation of this show's character's logic is kind of suspect and hopefully the whole "you're getting awfully close to your deranged alien wife (read: she's actually just forcing herself on him against his will) who will stop at nothing to separate us despite constantly avoiding her and denying her.... THEREFORE YOU MUST ACTUALLY LOVE HER AND WE'RE JUST LEADING ME ALONG THE ENTIRE TIME" concept won't become a recurring gag <--(doubt).

However, David Production delivers a very beautiful modern visual adaptation and there are some honestly pretty good gags. It got at least 2 genuine out-loud chuckles <--(kind of rare for me). Sometimes the character's stupidity leads to these moments and other times Anime-misunderstanding Syndrome strikes and creates a poor balance between comedy and motivation; feeling like it simply exists to make this show's entire concept endless.

It's hard to say how effectively a revival of a show that influenced 4 decades of an entire genre will play today. But honestly if you've never seen or heard of Urusei Yatsura, it's not hard to imagine. It is, at the very least, at par with or greater than the modern flock of rom-com it's flying alongside. Though there is maybe a bit of a noticeable... earnestness? straightforwardness? that the dialogue has that feels a smidge archaic? It's hard to explain, but it's not a bad thing on its own.

Lum's hair looks 10/10 tho.

We saw that both Lum and Shinobu don't take kindly to his flirting, so why?

Like what? You can easily pull out a webm clip to explain what are you exactly refering to.

Otherwise, like @Gigamecha12 and I stated you know jack about what good and bad animation stands for.

3:35 to 3:42 for example when the father talks. who also btw way looks weird, not alike an elderely japanese man with horns. Also about knowing jack about good animation maybe but I studied anymation for over 20 years and experimented with various forms, mostly for games but still. So saying I do not know jack shit... is a bit presumptive

Also is not something easy to explain : different sounds mean different mouth shapes but the mouths many times are animated like ventriloguist dummies

Weird, you do have a 90's anime Gokuudo Manyuuki as one of your favorites, which has typical anime animation for most of the time (Which i love, 90's anime animation and styles are my favorite), but you consider lip flaps to be bad animation... can you explain more? I need to understand you first before arguing with you.

I do not understand your comment. Ok, let's start with the beginning:
1. I am not a nit picker when it comes to animation, but when you remake a classic I expect it better than the original or at least as good. When you make bad from every pov from animation to the the joke delivery to the colors tyen I am gonna nitpick. Why bother remaking it in the first place. Shaman King was a good remake. i did not have the patience to rewatch it but they did a good job. This is not.
2. Gokuudo Manyuuki is all about the comedy, You have no time to look at the technical details because is joke after joke after joke...no time to rest.
3. My main problem is not the lip flaps is everything. The characters no longer have the charm they had, the jokes are no longer funny because the anime explains every cultural reference to you... I mean would you think a standup act is funny if the performer felt the need to explain every little thing to you? Also the perosnality of the characters is all wrong. I mean yeah Ataru like to chase skirts but is not such a cut and dry thing. Lum's character is also much different . I mean everything in this remake has the delicacy of a hammer hititng your head. Also cherry is much more intentionally evil than chaotic . Inthe manga and original anime he is more like trying to be good but gets derailed by his desires and incompetence, but here he is plain evil. Also the fact they skipped so much

I don't get these nostalgic reboots. Why make it the same as the original? What's the appeal? Why not keep the story but have it play in the current time?
And who is going to explain to the current generation what a rotary phone was and how you used it?

I used to watch Ranma 1/2 on TV when arriving home after junior high. Since then I loved both that artstyle and humor from Rumiko Takahashi. I had never watched the original Urusei Yatsura, though I always knew how iconic Lum character was for the whole industry since its conception back in the 80s. I liked this first episode from the reboot. It fulfilled my expectations.

Damn, I didn't watch the original, but this is a funny ass show. I didn't expect the characters to act the way they do, like the monk guy (un)intentionally bullying Ataru or them to have this goofy love triangle, but it was fun nonetheless. Will watch the next few episodes and then decide if it's worth watching till the end, since I don't think it'll be able to keep my attention that long with this kind of premise.

i loved the manga but paused it - im glad i did because its animated so good!

ive only seen some random eps of the old anime on tv, but this feel so much better to me. the animation is great (but i love davidpro in general lol. ive waited fire force s3 instead of reading just because of how greatly animated it is :3), and obviously same for seiyuus! i especially love kamiya as ataru :3 and i like that ataru's dad's seiyuu is ataru's old one!

i dont get why people complain about the nipples though. its a comedy, its not an ecchi/hentai.

one thing that i find strange is how they didnt update the setting to 2022 like banana fish and kiseijuu did though. ex the crt tv in ataru's home. it obviously doesnt ruin the series, but its a strange choice imho.

Quite nice to see a remake of this series, nice to see how they stayed quite close to the original art yet still utilising more new techniques. The only thing that they will never tip is the amazing OP&ED OST from the original, those were just spot on, the new ones lack quite a lot compared to it. But other than that, I'm looking forwards to see future episodes of this remake!

The Living Legend that is Rumiko Takahashi's first ever manga, rebooted EXACTLY 41 years to the day the OG 1981 anime adaptation started (October 14), paired with DavidPro who's a great fit for a veteran studio.

The OP and ED by the same artist, OP is fine, but the ED is straight fire.

Ataru Moroboshi embodies the epitome of the modern rom-com tropes being a bad-luck rate womanizer (that was fresh back in the 1980s), and Lum holds the record for being the first-ever "otaku waifu".

The game of tag between human and Oni for humanity's sake for the fate of Earth being invaded in 10 days, and Ataru tries his best to tag the flying Lum who can alsoo control electricity, which thanks to a lucky pervert moment, he managed to save the Earth. But in a spirit of forgetfulness, his marriage proposal to his long-time childhood friend Shinobu...became one towards Lum instead, clinching her horns as a sign of acceptance.

And yelp, Ataru's life doesn't get better being the womanizer he is, with Lum being possessive of him while Shinobu gets the flack for being the 3rd party in this sudden proposal of a love triangle. This is gonna get messy, BUT GOOD.

I'd thought that Hiroshi Kamiya did good being Ataru, but it's Sumire Uesaka being Lum that holds the most appeal (as she did Nagatoro before). And since this is David Production, it certainly has the JoJo feels when it comes to its outlandish styling.

A legendary series revisited, and this is already looking great.
And while this will not adapt the entire manga, think of this as an "All Stars" version where certain chapters and arcs will be adapted.

Yeeee the Visuals for the OP and ED were sick

fine introduction, not too much is changed as expected from the original pilot (seen twice in late 2006 and early 2019). Never been a fan of Cherry/Sakurambo and he was already being a trouble in the very beginning. One of my two best friends is a real enthusiast of the franchise and has sort of left spoilers about the early / late appearance (or entire lack thereof) of some of the main cast. OP has some really cool visuals and i already enjoy more it than most of the 80's ones of the OG show, the ED not so much (even if this is isn't even a direct comparison to Cosmic Cycling that is by far my favorite Urusei Yatsura song). Sumire Uesaka already seems a good casting choice for the main character.

Wow, I'm impressed...this is probably one of the worst first episodes I've ever seen. The comedy/slapsticks humor was not funny and was way overdone, the characters are annoying as hell, and the premise is stupid. I really, really want to like this considering how much I like Inuyasha, but this is not it. This reminds me more of Ranma 1/2, except the author took everything I hate about it and dropped it into one show. The main characters are pretty much a mash of tropes I detest the most - pervert, abusive tsundere, noisy, prone to misunderstandings, etc. I love the visuals and animation so I might give it three episodes, but this looks like a hard drop for me.
