What a terrible episode.

The worst. By far.

You could've slaughtered that village without giving me 15+ minutes of Christian CRAP.

These last 5 episodes or so have really brought down the quality of this series. Lowering my rating to a 7/10.

Brutal, amazing and sad episode which really shows the atrocities they resort to with a bigger focus on the village they pillage compared to previous episodes. Earlier on thought the Priest was just some drunkard but him searching for love and also trying to warn the villagers changes my opinion on him.

I truly enjoyed the episode, not much to say about it, really. I just wanted to point out a couple of artistic references I've found while watching it, which I think are pretty impressive and not present in the manga, therefore shout-out to WIT for these beautiful easter eggs!

The first one is right after the opening (around 3:10). It took me some time because it's Christ in his Pantocrator form, inside an almond, the Christ of the Day of Judgment. Pretty common iconography for the Romanesque era.
After a while of me pondering, almost desperately, I finally remembered where I had seen such frowning brows and such architecture. It's from Sant Climent the Taüll (Taüll, Catalonia, Spain).
Here's a link for those who are interested in the subject.

The second one is right in the middle of the episode (around 11:38). We see a visual reference to Satan and Hell. That one was easy because from my favorite tympanum of the whole Romanesque era. Actually, just a small section of it. I'm talking about the Sainte-Foy's tympanum (Conques, France). Here are, again, a couple of useful links:

  1. original website
  2. website with a deep and interesting analysis made by Pierre Seguret

Sorry for any mistakes, English is not my first language. Anyways, hope (at least) some of you will find this helpful or interesting! Bye, Laurelle.

The story goes deeper each episode goes by and stories gets passed on to people like Thors' death by their hands which was sad

And here Christianty shows how it changes the people's lifestyle by believing in god and how it really affects their belief, The snow in honesty really is a hassle more so if the weather is really heavy with wind coming by and makes their journey a lot harder than usual the reality of how hardships can be

The sacrifices that the villagers have gone through really says about kill or be killed if you can't fight for your own you might as well be dead from the start and it's the harsh reality set by this cruel world that they have to live in.

At first it was kinda wholesome she stole something and regretted it but it’s so desirable to her and it even looked nice on her left hand but then it turned dark and at first I was hating on Askeladd but then when I saw the prince didn’t even try to stop him i realized it was the only way

We've seen countless slaughters in this show before, some of them being harmless villages, but this is the only time we get to see the other side, to see the characters no matter how unimportant they are, especially by utilizing a family as the target of empathy for us the audience, it really makes you realize how brutal and horrifying the biking pirates under Askeladd are. He may not hate the Welsh as he does to the Dane, but he cares not for anyone except himself.

Anne is just a teenage girl, for her to witness her family's and clansmen's massacre when she's still questioning her faith and her state of innocence, you can be sure she'll grow a wicked thought. Who knows whether she may justify any bad actions in her future by saying that she'll go to hell anyways.

This ep is quite refreshing, to have it see what Askeladd and his men usually do from another POV is quite unexpected, but there's just 1 tiny problem...
HOW COULD THE EARS-GUY NOT HEAR ANNE WHEN SHE'S THAT CLOSE?! There is no excuse, he's shown to be capable of detecting anything, so so should Anne.

What an episode. Everything in this episode was just too perfect. At the same time, I felt bad for the characters, especially the girl Anne who stole that ring from the market just because she didn't have any money on her, and then Askeladd's men killed the whole village that was just living peacefully during this whole time.

Very sad and emotional episode. The direction of this episode was the best in my opinion. 10/10 episode.

This was really powerful, just like the episode with the grandma. I wasn't expecting her to be happy of all things but makes sense as she found people who weren't afraid of God.

the whole part from when Bjorn enters the house of that family was just pure heartbreak.

the way Aaskeladd said, "you won't have to worry about winter anymore because we are going to relieve you of your earthly suffeing" was so cold. i have no idea how a man is capable of saying or doing things like that even after that dude was sincerely pleading.

made me all sad bruh

I love Vinland saga because of its realism when it comes to characters since no one is good or bad everyone is human and this episode just reminded me that are main crew are not good people, and they can do some messed up stuff and the last few episodes made me grow to like them a lot but I kind of forgot that they are pretty bad people and this episode highlighted that.

Great characters in this show!

5/5 episode.

I look forward to the episode Bjorn is defeated or killed. Funny how I actually like Askeladd but can't stand Bjorn.

It's funny when lines like "Do you speak our language?" come up and they are all speaking Japanese.

Why is she elated? I don't think I understood it. Oh, nvm, it's because there are other evil people out there.

For how different this episode was with the main perspective being from a complete side character for this episode, this was easily the best episode of Vinland Saga so far. For how simple this episode seems, there's lots of layers to peel from here, complex emotions, haunting and spine-chilling moments in the desolate, dark blizzard and an interesting philosophical episode to watch too. It actually spent time with showcasing some of the actions and thought processes behind the Vikings, and how despite the viewer spending loads of time with the crew and their journey, they are no saints by any means. Anne's not the most prominent character in this series by any means but she and her inner thoughts about religion and the aftermath of the massacre made her to be more compelling than a majority of characters in this series, including Thorfinn himself for the first 14 episodes. Yutaka Yamada's music for this episode was haunting and only grew more and more tense as the episode progressed, and the storyboards and stills were great and oozed detail with its visual storytelling, and even consistency for once. Sound design was exceptional too. Production-wise, this was the most consistent and well-composed/directed episode of the 14 so far. This might not have the biggest moments to the plot and characters in the long run, but the directing and showcase of the brutality on top of the more interesting philosophical questions posed made this to be a really damn good episode. Not as many flaws as the other episodes.

The priest’s got his salvation upon realizing Christ can also exists in Danes.

The little girl felt elated by the fact the sin she committed earlier is nothing compared to the sins committed by the Danes.

What an amazing episode.

This episode truly made me feel like shit after. I'm glad we're brought back to reality that our "epic Viking fun time warriors!" are reprehensible pillagers that subsist off the suffering of others. Very easy to forget with all the sick fights and quests for glory.

This episode really felt like a break in the narrative to re-ground the series, and I'm glad it did. I miss my main man Thors more than ever.

Dude seemed really confident with his estimate of how many bodies he could fit in the hole that he dug. He didn't say 60, he said 62.

I can only imagine what watching this episode must've been like while it was airing, for all the non-manga readers. A new episode drops, and you probably expect some more bloody viking action. Well you certainly got some bloody, and you probably were like WTF alongside it. It's an anime, it's got its shounen tropes and whatnot. Maybe it wasn't clear before, but by now it should be obvious that you're probably not going to find the "power of friendship" and such going forward.

Also I remember the girl dying at the end, but clearly she isn't? Or maybe she's hallucinating and dying and thinks she's in heaven? Man I don't remember all the fine details, but I'd love it if she did indeed survive and does in fact stumble across Thorfinn and the others later.

This episode really drives home how utterly wicked & cruel Askeladd & his men are. The way they apathetically determine the value of other lives based merely on utility is what makes it even more hollowing. I think the hardest part of this episode was seeing the contrast between that girl's innocent guilt over petty theft vs the total detachment of men who robbed her of her family & home.

I like how they captured the struggles of a Christian. Living in those dangerous times. The animation was on the point you could honestly tell how cold it was and how much of a struggle it was living through those harsh winters. The way Askledd gave those Christians hope and then took it all away, the delivery of that was spot on.

Jesus, You only draw superficial conclusions, you are not immersed in anything, you speak and speak, but you elaborate nothing, specify your argument of motherhood more.

It's meant to be a solid episode, from the TOTALLY innocent point of view of this massacre, because we always watching the eyes of Askeladd or Thorfinn about them, and here comes an episode that builds this little empathy between the viewer and the characters. We even had a good background and deepening in Priest, something that already shapes his character completely, of course is a small bonus in the episode.

And the brothers had been knocked out by Thors, just visiting the first episodes of the anime you will see. So it is possible that they do not remember very much who he was, as they must have been woken up after the fight was over.

Couple of things here? Empathy between characters? Which characters is that? The nobodies that got killed, Askellad, priest who makes no sense and pretends to be some kind of deep meaning? Also considering thorfin has been trying to kill askellad for years, I am pretty sure that everyone knows who Thor was and how he was killed. The pacing is extremely slow and episode after episode don't cover anything? Why is the religion here anyway, is the story going anywhere. I read the manga years ago and loved it, but I don't remeber it and most likely I had hundreds of chapters to read so garbage like this didn't bother me. This episode was 90% pointless. Everyone talks slowly like they are retards and they don't even make sense. I am complaining because there is no value in the 20 min episode and people are wanking over background.

Mod Edit: Modified quote of edited post.

Thins kinda. I don't know the anime as for now feels a bit empty for my tastes. I started watching the show bcs everyone recommended it to me, but I am torn apart between ok episodes and plain boring episodes. And yeah the fact they can't remember when clearly the revenge battle is always held public and with reason behind - also pretty sure he will state it often enough as it is. Makes no sense at all.

At least I am starting to like new opening and ending song again ._.

When Anne asked her father about God and judgment, it made me wonder if people like them questioned the inconsistencies and hypocrisy in the Bible during times when the majority were uneducated and lived in small, isolated communities. Nowadays, as a well-informed individual, it's easy to see the flaws in religious teachings.

Damn, the little humanity I have left made me feel bad watching them annihilate that village. I wouldn't feel as bad if they annihilated a wealthy town or city instead. Askeladd is right; however, at least they are free from earthly sufferings.

This is the best episode so far. I love it when the main cast is not your typical goody-two-shoes protagonist.

wow. what an incredibly dark episode. the atmosphere was so well done, having the sense of connection to the villagers by seeing them in a dinner setting just makes the outcome of the attack so brutal. the religion theme was explored beautifully as well. the fear of the unknown, the girls indulgence in her sin, especially with the strange happiness she realized after seeing the evils of the slaughter, its so twisted and fascinating. one of my faves so far

Easily the best episode of the show so far. Masterful in its commitment to mood and atmosphere while also being heartbreakingly poetic. Felt almost like I was watching an Ingmar Bergman movie at points with all the rumination on faith and religion.
