Ew another Tonikawa type anime, only this time the flawless girl that is instantly and unconditionally in love with the bland protagonist looks like a child. What an improvement! I was able to finish Tonikawa, but I highly doubt I can do that again.

Two points,

2. Where the fuck are all of you even getting the sex slave thing from?!

If memory serves right, the song(or at least the tune) was very popular in Japan during this time period. The Manga includes a lot of snippets about life and culture during this time period as well as some tidbits from the scanlator, but the manga was indeed very well researched.

It's interesting to see melodies being exchanged between cultures. I had always heard that song that Yuzu was singing as one called Don't forget to pray, but apparently it's also what a friend we have in Jesus.

this was actually so cute. way different from what i was expecting, but either way i really liked it. the main character is pretty relatable and yuzu seems soo sweet. i hope they don't sexualize her..including the fandom. gross. looking forward to ep 2

i understand how misogynistic this is and how its borderline pedophilia(?), but i mean theres nothing explicit (so far?) and this was the "norm" for people in this era. still kinda iffy on the relationship, but i personally just hope it doesn't end up having scenes similar to mushoku tensei, considering both , especially yuzu, are just children. makes me a little uncomfortable but ive heard good things about this, it might not be as bad as people are arguing

Aparently the tune was written by a man named William O Perkins who lived from 1831 to 1902. This is the Taisho period 1912-25, so it must have come to Japan from wherever he's from. I can't find much information about him outside of the note in the hymn book

My favorite manga I read 2 years ago is finally here in the anime XD

At the start, he's already in a bad position right now, especially I don't know what causes them to treat him poorly ever since the accident occurs which causes the death of his mother and injury to his dominant right arm, but might be revealed soon, somehow.

Well this time we have a cute waifu who will pamper him a lot. This is gonna be amazing, as a romcom fans. I'm anticipating this cute moment XD

And last but not least, the anime is set during the Taisho era (1911-1926), with the episode ending, the date right now over there is 1 January 1922.

Well, first impression, this will be a great anime alongside Komi-san that is airing 2 days ago. I'm anticipating for more hype next week.

when yuzu started humming and later singing I immediately remembered planetarian for this song. Just the tune feels appropriate for looking up into the sky to the stars and hope all will be better. Pretty fitting for both planetarian and this anime..

I saw Historical in the genre and theme section, so that was already had me attentive.

Then as soon as I saw age gap romance from reading over the synopses (here on MAL and as it's described elsewhere on other sites), I was doubly all over this.

Historical is rare enough, but age gap romance is always a win of some form and one of my treasures.

The first episode was cozy and charming as they both thawed to their new living situation in that rustic villa. The countryside being inundated with snow and the New Year's time period made the entire setup feel more remote and intimate, as if they were the only two people in the world. Lovely.

I keep my expectations low for all new series generally and this is no exception, but I'm covertly rooting for it hard as this is exactly my niche - Period piece settings and unlikely or uncommon relationship dynamics.

Some of its basic elements of plot make it a bit like a fully human and more grounded (non-fantastical) version of Beauty and the Beast or Mahoutsukai no Yome and it'd be nice to see it channel even a shred of their raw emotional power.

14 is literally still in the age range of prepubescent girls

And even if it wasn't, it is still weird to have these minors get shipped despite the big age gap.

Why is it so hard for authors to make characters the same age? Why always these weird age gaps? Geez.

Its three years age gap. I don't know what is normal in your culture but in mine, three years is like nothing. Also the setting is in different era where the normal (or at least the law) is girls marry at 15. So for the characters in the anime, the girl is nearing marrying age. I think you have a misunderstanding because the girl is short.

I'm not against underage sexual relationship but the anime title shouldn't be "Maiden Fairytale" because obviously no woman has a dream to serve man, especially to the guy she doesn't even meet yet. And it's not Yuzu's dream either, she want to stay in school with her friends, so it's definitely not a fairytale to her.
First, "underage" was considered less than 15 in Japan. Second, for centuries, women were seen as baby-making things, servants, beautiful objects. Girls were told they had to be obedient and serve their husbands. Mindset of girls were different from today. To say that no woman has a dream to serve man is so 2000's point of view. Girls dreamed of being a worthy bride, good housewife, have many children (male would be wonderful), and of course it was their dream to be married to someone rich and powerful (for family sake usually). Girls didn't have the luxury to dream about own happiness. They were trained to serve men since birth, and many girls would sometimes see their future husbands only once before marriage and then at the marriage; or just at the marriage. Marriages often happened for monetary or political reasons and to prolong the lineage. "Love" and "guy she doesn't even meet yet" were irrelevant.

You need to watch more than 1 episode to determine why this is a maiden fairytale.

No matter how cutesy you try to make this, until you grapple with the fact that you're trying to tell a heartwarming story about a teenage girl being bought to be a depressed rich kid's sex slave, I really don't think that the rest matters.
A sex slave? Really? The girl's duties are to do house chores and take care of a cripple; not to comfort the rich kid in bed! Did you watch the anime?
It's made even worse by the segment where she goes to school and everybody remarks on how perfectly suited she is for the slave wife life, and how she works harder than anybody else to be the absolutely perfect piece of property.
You definitely need to read some more history. No man or woman considered such life as "being a slave". Women were trained to be useful to their husbands and their biggest purpose was to give birth to children. It's wrong from today's standpoint, but it was perfectly normal in 1920 Japan. And since the show takes place in 1920 Japan, the school segment makes perfect sense.

Hopefully you don't think that the wife=sex slave?

Yeah I doubt that. This is exceedingly tame compared to other pre-modern settings and topics that could have been chosen. The first thing ancient history students are told when studying is to forget about modern morals; it's anachronistic as fuck. This is just how shit was, and depicting it through rose-tinted glass is not only disrespectful to the people who went through this back then because people want to pretend it didn't happen, but also just straight up factually incorrect

We don't know what kind of people we truly are until the moment before our deaths.
As death comes to embrace you, you will realise what you are.
That's what death is, don't you think?

It's made even worse by the segment where she goes to school and everybody remarks on how perfectly suited she is for the slave wife life, and how she works harder than anybody else to be the absolutely perfect piece of property. The whole thing might work if you replaced her with… I don't know… a dog or a cat. Not people. Not a slave. Not a teenage girl slave.

That's one hell of a hump to get over and past with not just any substantial commentary or acknowledgement of how messed up it is, but how joyful and effervescent she is about being owned by the bourgeoisie. But that's also its primary standout trait. It's just another one of the excessively saccharine shows about a melancholic dude suddenly has a doting wife dropped into his lap, the draw being a cute girl smiling in her unquestioning devotion and inexplicable love for Insert Name Here. Normally, it's just happenstance; some fox god sees a guy is hard working, or a girl sees that a guy exists. Hell, it's not even the first "sad rich dude buys a teenage girl," except this one doesn't have a magical goat-headed dude.

I can understand what you're saying, but this way of thinking is anachronistic. Would you prefer to have the historical context viewed through a rose-tinted glass and just pretend this didn't happen? This is informing thousands of people of the standard practices of the era. Modern morals would consider these events morally deplorable and illegal, but the simple end of the line fact is that this isn't set in a modern world. It's a setting where this was not only the standard way of life, but there simply was no alternative. Women, for 99% of history, were raised from childhood as one of two things: wives, or priestesses/religious figures. That's it. In the same way the men were raised to fight and engage in civil administration. It was that way from the beginning of civilization, and was even in 1920s Japan. Depicting it as it genuinely was is the best way to inform people about this so we don't forget history. Would you rather they be completely disingenuous to the historical context for the simple sake of viewer comfort and modern morals? By that logic, no Nazi film should ever be made. No historical show should ever include rape, because we consider it immoral, even if it wasn't back then.

We don't know what kind of people we truly are until the moment before our deaths.
As death comes to embrace you, you will realise what you are.

The beginning wasn't the main forte of the manga, it gets more interesting in 1-2 eps with the other characters getting introduced as well. Either way you can already get a grasp of how fast the months go by. This remains somewhat constant in the story to the point at least 3 years have passed by the end, without any major time gap.

It's not surprising to see some of the reactions here, ever since I saw something similar in a Otoyomegatari discussion thread. No matter how respectful or in good taste the depiction can be (in both cases of historical settings with arranged weddings), if you don't show the worst case scenarios you're "glorifying" the issue. It strikes me as odd that's the read / that's what people wants out of all their entertainment. I don't think you need a narrative spoonfeeding you "this is bad" every single time. And at the same time you're not giving this title the benefit of the doubt because they are not married yet, we don't know if they will marry when she becomes 15 and he's still not 18 or if they will wait, etc.

On a side note that visual effect used at the beginning emulating old film or whatever was actually pretty annoying, I was still seeing the flashes in the screen even after the flashbacks were over.

In the one-shot that preceded the manga was 10K, then the mangaka changed it to 200K for the main manga and the anime seems to have opted for the older amount. It's probably not very important, but the author felt like changing it for some reason.

A monthly salary, doesn't mean buy a bride for your whole life. And wtf is the debt and family that’s willing to sell daughter for a couple of bucks. 200k doesn't make it any better. Or is she paid monthly for her whole life ? 🤣 if that's not the case I'm off to buy some brides.

Nvm 1920 10k yen was 60k dollars nowadays. So 200k yen sounds more realistic.
If that's the time they‘re in, based on some comments.

The amount is just irrelevant to the story. It's just meant to be a big/pretty sizeable quantity.

"200K doesn't make it any better"
Well 200K in 1920 is probably 100 times more the current value or maybe more. Not sure if I have to explain basic knowledge on how inflation works.

It's literally in the little. A Maiden from the Taishou era, which went from Jul 30, 1912 to Dec 25, 1926.

30 seconds into the episode you can see a 1910s-style car.

For people who are angry, what I just want to say is: Here I was after watching Heike Monogatari, where the second daughter married when she 9 yo and become widow when 11 yo, then died of loneliness when she 24 because her father (for political reason) just never married her to another person.. For that reason, Yuzu is actually very very lucky.

Not a bad first episode, but an odd one. You can already see the groundwork being built for their relationship and it is already pretty cute and wholesome, but Yuzuki kinda feels a bit too nice and I feel like there's a big disconnect between how seriously Tamahiko is treating his hand injury and my modern viewpoint of how serious an issue it is: I'm sure it may have been a more serious thing back then, but to me it comes across as completely ridiculous how his entire family hates and disowns him over his injury and how he thinks he has no value in life because of it.

This could go on to either be incredibly wholesome or very icky, depending on how it's executed on the whole. This episode makes me think it's gonna be more the former, but I'm hoping that doesn't end up going as utterly inane as Tonikawa was.

Yuzu should decide if she should be a daughter, bride or a mother to our depressed lead. She's definitely a Pokemon tho XD.
I only didn't like one aspect in the episode, but will need the next episode to be more clear about that.
