Depends on the show. Most of the time, it's first name, but most MHA and JoJo characters, among others, I call by their last names.

Their actual name
For example: Nakano, Nino. I just call this character with her "last" name, Nino.

Edit:

Nino is actually her "first" name...

What I meant was if we're going by the Japanese naming standards, or something like that.

They are called by their last names more often than their first name, so as a listener it's more easier to remember that.

Like everyone remember Kaneki instead of Ken from Tokyo ghoul, Dazai instead of Osamu from Bungou stray dogs. But in case of Natsuki Subaru, he is more often referred as Subaru in that show so it's easier to call him that.

@CuckooClock @Daxonzion- Using "family name" and "given name" makes it a lot easier.

OT: I use the one that's used the most in the anime.

It depends on how the character is frequently called by others in the show.
- given name (Kazuma, Subaru, etc.)
- family name (Kaneki, Onodera, etc.)
- nickname (Shamiko, Mr. Braun, etc.)

I would call them by their first names by the english stanndard.

Goku's name is Son goku. But everyone calls him Goku by his second name.

I watch anime in their original language, so in the case of Japanese, I call characters by their family names first and then their given names, e.g. Hinata Shouyou, Bakugo Katsuki etc. It feels weird to do it the other way around. When I'm reading character names in manga, my mind automatically reads them family name first.

My answer is same as Monochrosanity.

I'm taking Araragi and Shinobu of Monogatari as example. Sure, Araragi has 'Koyomi' as his first name. But for most of times he's called 'Araragi'.
The same case goes for Shinobu.

It depends on what they are being called in the show. Some of them have nicknames. For example Rakeu Rekeureisyeo in Tower of God who has a name that is hard to call but he is always been called an alligator, gator or crocodile. I think it will be funnier to call nicknames if they have one.

Well, I'm not even sure what's the right first name or last name for most characters. But when I do, I prefer first names.

It depends, for example in MHA I call everyone by their surnames (except for Deku), in Danganronpa I switch (I say "Kirigiri" instead of "Kyoko" but "Junko" instead of "Enoshima") and in the rest I usually call them by their first name

I am bad with names, so most of time I don't even remember their names.
I usually glance at db and use the name which is frequently used in the anime, if I don't remember how they called in the anime then I use first name (In some cases the name with few letters, or easy to pronounce/type)

Whatever they're called in the anime. I knew a guy that only called Kaneki 'Ken' and I couldn't even remember who he was talking about until he specified it and looked at me like I was the dumb one

Usually whichever name the other characters call that character by, including nicknames. Kusonogi Himawari from xxxHolic is referred to by most of the characters as Himawari-chan, but there's also this one character that calls her Kusonogi, so I end up calling her by both names. Then there's the unnamed protagonist of Zaregoto, who has like 6 or 7 nicknames, and I try to use as many of them as possible whenever talking about him. That's also the case with the protagonist of my favorite show, Araragi Koyomi, whom I sometimes call Araragi, Ararara...ragi, Koyomi, Koyomin, Aragi (or try to misspell it on purpose, since that's a thing the characters in the show do). I often attach honorifics to characters, and those can vary too.

If I don't know the name of a character, or if I don't like them, than it's "the character with [color] hair" -- that usually works too.
by kusonogi himawari, you mean kunogi himawari? it's like you're adding crap to her family name, which is pretty funny

ehhh kinda depends

for me it would usually be like:

Japanese names? I'd probably use the last name
Foreign names? I'd probably use their first name

exceptions

(for Japanese names) if there are multiple people in the show who share surnames (ie family members), I use the first name
(for both foreign and Japanese names) if they have nicknames, I'd rather use those

By their "real name". Always all the time.

But for real, it depends, usually just the name that comes to mind first. Which is usually the most commonly used name in the show as well.

The standard would be to use the family name if they were real people but nobody would know who you were talking about if you don't use their more well known names (Either first or last) sometimes with preface of which anime they're from.

For example if I use Natsuki, am I referring to Natsuki Subaru, Natsuki Nakagawa, or other characters named Natsuki? The same could be said for first name for example Yui, am I referring to Yui from K-on or Yui from Oregairu?
