I had high expectations for this one but I don't like it at all :( it's just the story feels really generic, the art style is unique but isn't something amazing and the characters seem bland, well let's see how it goes :/ |

I'm personally devasted with the mess that is the anime adaptation of one of my favourite games of all thime. For starters, the 3D CGI models have incredibly bad shading and don't blend at all with the backgrounds. Also, they are incredibly low-poly and give off the feeling that they belong in a different era, the frogs looked so polygonal and not in the stylized way but the cheap make it really quick way. I prayed they would take a page of Futurama's book on how they used shading on their 3d cgi models to make them blend with the backgrounds but the nauseating fast camera movements coupled with the grotesque-looking cgi make this show a visual shitshow during fight scenes. The 2D scenes actually look nice and do Nomura's signature stylish designs justice, that coupled with the thick and clean line-art the original is known for. They skipped the first bit in the original where Neku is being hateful towards society, they even toned down his antisocial asshole factor. All of this is just outright bad and disrespectful to the original, it's a glorified ad for neo-twewy in my book. The entire point of the game's story is how Neku grows as a person and how life is not as bad as he originally envisioned it, it's a game that revolves around this simple but beautiful message ergo the game's original title "It's a Wonderful World". I'm gonna watch it weekly with my friends who also share my love for twewy so I can take the piss at it, this is the only way i can cope with how bad this turned out. |

Luxeraph said: I get the feeling that those that already played the game wont be able to stomach much of this show; the show itself is decent, a bit rushed but not bad, but when you already played the game it feels bad, to me my biggest gripe is the 3DCG, why the heck use it other than saving money? the game already has this beatiful 2D style, you don't need to replace it with above average 3D. I'll give it a couple more episodes but I think I'm gonna drop it, guess this is how those that already played persona 5 felt when we got the show we ended up with. I'm in the exact opposite camp here. I loved the first episode because I love the game, but if I just came into this blind I'd have probably thought it was... decent. I don't want to call this bad because, even isolating the game, the style and action are right on point, in my opinion. As for my own thoughts on the pacing, yeah it's quick. It's what I'd expect though. Unfortunately the game's storyline is too big for one season, but I think two seasons would have needed a lot of filler for it to work as an anime. Also, I didn't even know the noise were all CG, and frankly I don't care that it is. It completely matched the art style and aesthetic of the game, and I love that, makes it unique among the animes I've watched so far too. |

The low score is disheartening to see. This is perfect so far, I don't mind that it's rushed, no need to show the more repetitive parts of the game like fights (and getting lost). The animation and art is very impressive, everyone looks even better and more detailed than in the game. So glad they are using the amazing soundtrack from the game. The music has not at all aged poorly...what an idiotic thing to say. |

I haven't played the game, but those thick lines are reason enough for me to stick to this one. I love the art style and the CG seems really well done too. I get that CG haters exist, but this episode was a visual treat for me. Now for the content, it was pretty decent, basically what you would expect of a death game show. I liked it. The pacing seemed a bit off tho. Episode 1, and 2 days have already passed. Maybe they'll introduce something else when all the days have passed idk. Also, why does he keep fainting after every day? No one even questions that. Overall, decent 1st episode with great visuals. |

It was an ok episode for me. I feel like they toned down the introverted and unsociable first week Neku since they didn't show his initial speech, his way of disliking most human beings and they added the red noise effect to the scene where he is attacking Shiki which gave it a more "lighter" tone. Fight scenes where great nevertheless! |

Since i've played both the game and am now watching the anime i'll share my thoughts of it. -I honestly wished Neku's edgy monologue was in the first episode. -As always i loved the character designs and the art. -The animation well the cgi was pretty obvious and yeah ngl it did kinda looked awkard too look at. -I'm digging the music soundtrack i must say and hearing Calling and Its A Wonderful World was really fucking awesome. -The story well i have some mixed feelings about it. Neku isn't exactly the same as he was back in the original game but then again in the Japanese version he was much more politer than the English localization so when the English dub does come out maybe could fall in closer to the English version of the game. Now the scene with Shiki being choked well lol i'm surprised nobody has brought out the knives, torches and pitchforks about that scene and started to do a hashtag #nekuisoverparty yet. Me personally yeah Shiki not complaining much about it was kind of weird tho i must say. Players being posessed by noise well thats a new one but i think thats an element you're going to be seeing alot in Neo TWEWY since the trailer showed you fighting human based enemies. The pacing is pretty fast hell even more faster than the original game so the story is kinda rushed. 3 days in just one episode is a big fucking yikes 4 me dawg! Glad to see the o.g JP voice actors being back. So far overall things are looking promising. |

This is the most excited I've been for a seasonal anime and, well, it was disappointing. This episode wasn't bad or anything. I just don't think it understands what made the original work so well. Everyone in this thread has already pointed out that Neku's a lot dumber and less detached, but they've also made Shiki into a flustered moe archetype. Sure, she's sorta like that in the original game, but there's also a level of modesty and restraint to her because her fixation on being like Eri causes her to deprioritise her own individuality. It's been a while since I've played the game, but I also don't remember Uzuki and Kariya ever learning the player's names, or at least caring enough to use them. That makes far more sense when compared to how it's handled here since the reapers don't see players as people and therefore don't have any sympathy for them. They've also skimped out on some of the more important worldbuilding elements, like the barrier reapers and how noise affects regular people. The decision to make the techie guy a reaper was incredibly baffling since at this point in the game there isn't any taboo noise. Even then, since when was noise ever able to possess reapers? When could noise possess players? The soundtrack was a little underwhelming, too. The decision to use the menu theme when Shiki and Neku first started fighting noise was probably the least fitting song they could have chosen. Though I suppose I can't be too critical about song choice when there's barely any music to begin with. An ambient soundtrack in the same vein as Underground from the game would honestly go a lot farther in making this episode a lot more interesting. Even some of the song instrumentals would work. One of the things I love about the game's soundtrack is how each week compliments the personality of Neku's partner as well as the general direction of the story Some of the little details in this were cute, though. I liked the headers that flashed on the screen whenever Neku and Shiki went to different parts of Shibuya as well as some of the cameos at the start of the episode. I still haven't warmed to the way the characters look in this, but I think the art direction has been pretty good overall. It seems like Square are using this anime as a billboard for Neo TWEWY rather than going all-in on a faithful adaptation, which I guess I can understand. Even if they allocated an episode to each day it'd still feel like the story was glossed over, especially with how long some of the missions get towards the end of the game. I think a story like this is more suited to a manga especially with how the cutscenes in the game are as manga as they can get, but we all know how that turned out last time. I originally planned to do a full replay of the original game while the anime airs, and I think that's just what I'll do. Even if it gets worse from here on out I can at least get a kick out of seeing the second week animated, since it's definitely my favourite of the three Okay, I'll stop with the spoiler tags now. |

They already cleared 3 missions in 1 episode? And also Neku just straight up went into parallel world at the start of the episode they should at least show what he's been doing before he went inside. Everything progressing to fast. 3/5. 3 episode rule to this one |

I played the game a few years after it was released and really loved it. As first episode, I think it was a good start! As other already said, the pace was a bit rushed, I liked the background and character design, the CGI it's well-done, even if the motion in the battle scenes wasn't that fluid, the opening song was replaced with Calling (one of my favorite songs from the game) but was a bit disappointed about what happened to Ali because I was looking forward to hear Teenage City Riot. Anyone knows if they're gonna release the full version of the song despite the "accident"? |

They're rushing through so they can get to the real star of the show. You know who it is. Lol It's not even really rushing though-- I feel like the important stuff comes after the first seven days are up and onward. I never really felt like Neku's time with Shiki was all that deep anyway to be completely honest. |

Kinda decent episode. I was waiting for my fave dialogue of Neku's "... I don't get people, never have never will..." but there's none. Not a fan of CGI but not bad. I don't know how will they maintain the anime's progress from this point on, the episode was too fast-paced. I just hope it can be redeemable in the next episodes. If not then I'll still watch it tho for the nostalgia. |

OF COURSE they do this to my favorite anime. (': cutting neku's monologue (which is a part of his character development), making beat and rhyme absolutely passive (yes i love them seeing neku trying to kill shiki and doing absolutely nothing), the change in the 3rd day (they didn't wake up at the scramble crossing and shiki didn't take her almost death that lightly), neku mastering the use of pins out of the blue.......................................... at least they are getting the music right. sad to see ALI's opening go, but Calling is my favorite song on the game so i can take it. given the obvious one-cour, i imagine the anime will flow this way: week 1 - 3 episodes week 2 - 4 episodes week 3 - 4 episodes another day? (will it be animated i really don't know) - 1 episode given that they already covered almost half of week 1, probably next episode will be the shark tm and shiki's backstory, basically episodes 4 and 5 in the first half, shiki's backstory in the second half. then episode 3 would be the fight with higashizawa and perhaps even the 1st day of week 2. ouch. i expect week 2 to be a bit longer at least because it's the week with the most information and background. and then week 3 will be like two episodes for six days and the other two for the last lmao. i am crying inside |

Good episode, but the biggest flaw of this episode is that they didn't put Neku's monologue at the beginning. That introductory monologue scene is one of my top 3 moments in the game. By not putting that great scene, here in the anime Neku is shown as a generic MC with amnesia. They should have put more depth or more screen time to Neku's bitter character, since this flaw of Neku and his development are what make him a very well written character. I hope the upcoming episodes may improve. Maybe skipping some fights and putting more time in characterization can make this adaptation better, but I'm not sure. So far as a fan of the game, I'm very, very happy an anime version has been released! The art style looks perfect! |

I feel like the fast pacing is fine for this part of the story. The first three days are largely just tutorials for the game mechanics, and not much really happens. The monologue and threat to Shiki being more prominent plot points in the episode would have been more impactful though. At this point, I feel like it's doing its job of getting people who missed out on the game up to date on what happened before NEO, so I don't have any gripes. The visuals are spot on. Characters are a little off at the moment, but they could turn that around later, I guess. This all comes from someone who is barely past the first episode in the game though, so I don't know what is yet to come. But if they dragged out the first three days into three episodes it would have been so slow and plodding. |

I've played the game twice through myself, and yea, the way they're handling the story is my biggest complaint so far. They had to cut some of the things that help characterization of the characters, and overall it feels rushed. One thing I remember however, is that some interview stated that this anime (and the upcoming new game Neo TWEWY) are from a different continuity from the original TWEWY game. This was stated to explain how in the original game, all the characters had flip phones, matching the time the game came out, and how all the characters in this anime have smartphones instead. My guess as to why the pace is as rushed as it is: they're planning to cover most of the main story and then include completely new content towards the end that would connect it to Neo TWEWY. Just a theory, but considering this is Nomura we're talking about, anything goes. I'll probably stick with this till the end to see what they plan on doing. |

Also a cool little detail I was wondering if anyone else who's played the game picked up on: When Shiki tells Beat that Neku has amnesia, Beat visibly reacts a tiny bit. Why? Because he knows that Rhyme also has amnesia and has forgotten Beat's her brother due to Beat's entry fee being Rhyme's memories. That's was a nice subtle addition, and since I know the game's story it should be fun looking out for subtle foreshadowing for what I know is gonna happen :) |

I know nothing about this series going into it, but it looks and feels like a super bad Persona rip-off like Caligula. The difference here is that Caligula's anime (haven't played the game(s)) was actually a bit interesting and engaging for the six episodes I was able to watch before I got too busy and had to drop it. Hard drop for TWEWY's anime. Boring, generic, and overall unenjoyable. |

The World Ends With You was a game I never really got a chance to play properly but the art style and aesthetic choices such as the music etc always interested me, so I thought this series would be a good chance to catch up before the sequel on Switch instead of having to put dozens of hours into the game. I've played a total of about an hour or two of the game, and that was boiled down to about the first 10-15 minutes of this episode. It feels incredibly rushed, I don't feel like I've had enough time to take everything in and we're already 3 days into the Reaper Games. Some more character development, interaction and atmosphere building would've been really nice, as so far in the show it basically boils down to "this is spooky Shibuya, we can read minds and Neku's a bit mad". I'm optimistic that maybe the pace will slow down, we'll learn more about what's going on and I'll feel satisfied enough by the end of the series to warrant picking up NEO! The art style and musical elements are great, I'm not a fan of the 3D CG work at all, but it's something I'll have to deal with I guess based on how much they seem to be using it. |

Well, this was fast, rather bland (beyond the design coming from the game) and uninteresting. And looked bad (not the design, what was on screen). (I wonder what the others saw to say the CGI/drawings blend was a success.) The videogame was a good GAME. Not a good fiction. It was able to get a pass on it as most videogames because this was only a canvas on wich they put interesting visual/sound design and most importantly a fun way to play. No, most of your favourite videogames' stories are nothing remarkable. That doesn't mean they're bad, they're just doing their work : supporting the game. (sometimes a bit less than that) So, we've come to a point where even TV productions will use CGI body doubles for stunts? Maybe it has become cheap enough, but it doesn't make it better looking than before. The DB Super Broly film was released only two years ago and despite all its money, it didn't pull that technique well so how could a cheap TV series do it? Enjoyment: 2/5 And I didn't have any expectation, besides it being mediocre. @FMmatron Any thought about it? The DS game looked better. I'm done. FMmatron said: It's unlikely that it will get better. Oh no, it won't ! As always, it can only gets worse going forward. It's a hastily cobled up tv promotion made to "replace" the videogame and prompt people to buy the one released next summer. I wonder if this is a night series or day broadcast... By the way, if you never did, get a taste of the original videogame (on Dual Screen). |

Even if they allocated an episode to each day it'd still feel like the story was glossed over, especially with how long some of the missions get towards the end of the game. I think a story like this is more suited to a manga especially with how the cutscenes in the game are as manga as they can get, but we all know how that turned out last time. It was okay I guess. Played the original years ago and it remains my favorite game on the NDS and one of my favorite games ever. The anime is better than I expected, for sure, but I have a few gripes with it. The rushed pace as almost everyone has mentioned, poor characterization and almost no explanation whatsoever of what is the Reaper Game, why are they even playing it and where do those powers come from. Also the music felt a little out of place with the action scenes, but maybe that's just me. |

First episode felt meh to me. The fights didn’t really look good, the characters (so far) don’t seem memorable besides the outfits looking cool, and the premise feels like another “trapped in a mysterious world” but less exciting. But I’ll give it a couple more episodes sincerely can’t judge too much from the first episode. |

Great animation but the plot is pretty dull. They shouldn't just take the ingame battle and make it as an anime, they need to try a bit harder/ more creative with this type of adaptation. Maybe the source is just not good medium to become anime... It'd have been enjoyable if it's in the game I'm sure. |

It is very good. I liked the 1st chapter, I haven't played the game and watching the anime, it's interesting. And visually it looks GREAT and the soundtrack is very good. |

It really sucks that they are taking a 24 episode anime and cramming it into twelve episodes. I'm disappointed, I'd rather have had an incomplete anime than a rushed one. |

Honestly im shocked about how good the production quality is. I loved the action sequence in the first fight scene. The action and dynamic camera angles made it worth turning this into an anime. So far this is one of very few video game adaptations that I enjoy. People who complain about the CGI are babies. The CGI here is miles better than what many well-known studios are capable of making. It's actually impressive how cohesive the 2D and 3D art looks all while maintaining the same art style as the game. It's disappointing to see how low this has been scored... I know its kinda common for video game adaptations to get low ratings due to the video game fans being overly critical. But 5.96 seems lower than usual... Did the story really get butchered that bad? Or did the story stay in tact for the most part, and everyone's just crying about CG? And also, no, the story being "too fast paced" is not the same it getting butchered. The story in the game covers 21 days. The anime is 12ep. So squeezing 3 days into the first episode where little happens other than introductions is completely reasonable. Theyll have to save space for the game days that have a lot of events that happen. |
