This was painful to watch. I didnt expected much. But to ruin such beautiful Animation with this disgusting, sloppy Lazy writing. What was even the point. Instead of making proper dialog author just makes our main villain spit some random script all the time to cover the fact he has no idea what he would make her to say. There was no conflict there was nothing. This would be utter shit if it werent for the visuals. Im deathly afraid of the next episode and so should you

This is your own fault not the show. The show gives more than enough context and build up for you to understand the story. If you can only deal with handholding in term of narrative, then that's really not the show's fault.

That was some really nice direction. Loved the art style and lighting used in some scenes. Didn't really understand the whole premise of the show yet since it's just the first episode but I'll stick around and see whether the story is any good. Btw, the voice acting for the character named Misaki was superb!

I actually liked this first episode a lot. The visuals kinda reminded me of Shaft studio. The voice acting was amazing. And the plot seems promising. Excited to see where this goes.

It looks promising.

Some still and scenes were actually like a play. Certainly, I felt I was back in the old times. Although, I am not particularly fond of being taken back to the old times' XD.

The vamp breaking out was kind of well made. It was appealing to see her sway to the play. I kinda felt that it could have had a deeper meaning.

I'm not a big fan of dialogue so I don't want it to be a dialogue-heavy anime but it seems to be progressing that way. It would be good if there is a proper balance between the action and dialogue scenes. Don't want another Katanagatari.

Hopeful for the upcoming episode.

Hopefully this will help someone if they're a bit confused on wtf is going on. Feel free to correct me but from my understanding

  • Maeda returns to Tokyo after being away for 6 months. He's to go to the island to see whether Misaki is capable of being an agent for their vampire/task force.

  • Misaki was rehearsing for her play when the terrible accident occurred. Maeda tells the General her memories are stuck in that moment and it's likely she was infected/turned into a vampire shortly after the accident. General wants to know if she can be an agent and Maeda says it's unlikely. General asks if they should dispose of her even though it's a shame because of how rare/high ranking of a specimen she is. The General puts the decision of what to do with Misaki in Maeda's hands.

  • Now this leads to the next development. The person who infected Misaki is even rarer/higher rank. A squad is used to find their hiding place but to leave the capture to the task force.

  • Maeda goes to question Misaki. While there he signs something before heading to the Theater. It's mentioned earlier but Misaki received some personal belongings and in that was a letter presumably from her fiance. This is when Misaki connects the dots and realizes her fiance is Maeda. She breaks out.

  • Maeda and Misaki meet face to face. Maeda gets spooked and draws his weapon because it looks like she's about to kill him. Fortunately it looks like she restrains herself/has a moment of clarity. Remember throughout the episode Misaki has a few moments of clarity (saying goodbye to Maeda, reacting to Maeda trying to smoke, etc.). Anyway she introduces herself to her fiance for the first time. She dances with him, says a few parting words, then burns to ashes. How tragic.

  • Maeda gets promoted and is now in charge of Special Forces Unit 16 aka Code Zero. They are suppose to apprehend or dispose of vampires.

There's a few more layers/potential questions but don't want things to be too confusing.

Dunno where is it going because the first episode barely did explain the premise of the anime, but damn, what's up with the background art? So gorgeous. I was captivated by the setting and the rather methaphorical approach of the episode. Probably the anime won't continue with this kind of approach, and I'm not sure I'll like it, but by now it was a great surprise.

Ah, and the OST is fire too, I strongly doubt that any ending this season will be better than 'On my own'.

Yo, this has so much potential, it was really great. The visual style is also really reminding me of Kizumonogatari I love it. They really nailed the atmosphere of the show.

I noticed early on that Maeda must be the lover, that's really sad. Deffrot is very sus though and the ED did not help lmao, right now my suspicions are that he's the one that turned Misaki into a vampire, maybe to save her? Since she had an accident, that's only my guess. The soundtrack also fucking slaps. Really looking forward to the next episode.

Wow.. A 19:9 video format huh?

I'm already liking the unique and sharp animation (similar to monogatari series) as well as the overall story plot. And we have the one of the VA legend too, Junnichi Suwabe. What else can you say? 7/10 for starters, might change it to 8 if they explained it everything in the next one. Looking forward for more of this :)

That OP/ED at the end of the ep though, it was pretty good

First of all, I'm digging this art style a lot. I already love it. Then the story takes place in 1923, then we have a military premise with vampires involved. Alright, I actually enjoyed the first ep. At first, I was like what's actually going on here then it slowly turned my mind to actually think about it. Still, not sure what happened there, but I'm looking forward to this. OP is good but ED is a banger.

The episode was pretty intresting, definitely will check out the next few episodes.

The art is different and i quite like it, but i probably wouldn't binge thsi anime.

The soundtrack is great, i'm really enjoying.

Can't say much about the animation

And the story... seems intresting, it kinda shocked me with the death at the end, but intresting non the less. I'm intrested in seeing where this goes, but I highly doubt it will be a super amazing masterpiece.

Real quick gonna post a comment from another website since some people seem to be a bit confused.

"The play/opera salome is a french tragedy about the execution of john the baptist (changed jokanaan later to circumvent the ban on depicting biblical figures in plays) written by irish poet Oscar Wilde in the early 1890s.

In the play the princess salome is a a large banquet when she hears the prophet jokanaan preaching about how much of an incestuous whore her mother is while imprisoned in a well nearby. She hears that he is a young man and is intrigued at what kind of person would have the balls to talk shit about the queen so she demands the guards to take him out an show him to her much to the guards dismay. As soon as she sees jokanaan she falls in love with his beauty and asks to touch his body, but jokanaan realizes shes the daughter of the incestuous queen and is having none of it.

He rejects her in the worst way immagiable, calling her all sorts of horrible shit that would get you cancelled before you can say emilia is best girl, but salome is completely unfazed. She begins to insult his body acting like she never wanted to touch it in the first place, then shifts her focus to his hair, complimenting him on how black and curly it is, begging him to let her touch it. But jokanaan aint so easily swayed and keeps insulting her, so salome switches gears again, insulting his hair and complimenting his lips instead. Jokanaan rejects her again but this time salome dosent back down, continuously asking and then demanding a kiss from him, then asking him what she must do in order to seduce him. He basically tells her to fuck off into the desert and find jesus and repent for being born from the piece of shit queen.

But right then the captain of the guard who has been simping hard for salome cant take listening to her simp over jokanaan anymore, so he takes his sword and kills himself, the rest of the guards are like "yeah fuck this were putting the prophet back in the well" and throw jokanaan back in the well. Then the king comes over cause hes a sick fuck who has a thing for his daughter in law salome and is like WTF whys this guy dead. The guards say what happened and then some jews come over to talk to the king and everyone starts bickering about whether or not angels exist or not for an hour while jokanaan hurls insults at the queen from inside the well.

Then the king gets tired of the theocracy debate and starts doing what he came over to do, flirt with his daughter in law. She aint having it tho and the king and queen have a very stereotypical back and forth about which parent salome likes and obeys the best like bickering couple in a failing marriage. Then the king asks salome to "dance" for him (basically like some stripper) and when she refuses he tells her she will have anything she desires if she does it, and she perks up at that idea. She agrees after getting his word that she will get whatever she wants, and dances for her father in law like a stripper. After shes done the king asks her what she wants and she says her price. "I wish for the head of jokanaan on a silver platter" she says. The king is justifiably freaked out by this request cause wtf why does this teenage girl want a prophets head, thats some real blood lust right there, but the queen thinks salome is doing it for her cause the prophet wont stop insulting her. The king eventually agrees and has jokanaan executed and his head brought to her on a silver platter.

Salome is overjoyed and starts talking shit to the severed head, basically saying "you cant run now" and "i wont just kiss you ill bite your lips like a fruit" and kissed the severed head of the prophet jokanaan. Everyone watching is horrified and the king freaks out and has the guards kill her by crushing her with their shields. The End.

Now i am very glad that whole fucked up story didnt get adapted here cause that was some of the weirdest shit ive read this whole year, but it does give a lot of insight on the actions of misaki. Its heavily implied that misaki is maedas fiance that hes never met, and she seems to realize that through her madness in the interragation room, and her suspicions are confirmed when he write his signature on the document. It also seems that that realization in misaki caused the salome she was playing to mark maeda as her jokanaan, and then the two personas overlapped on one goal, seeing maeda/jokanaan again. Then she breaks out but dosent kill anyone, evidence that misaki is still somewhat in control. Then comes maedas encounter with salome/misaki. Salome begins her final act as if she is already holding jokanaans head on the silver platter, and then begins to "kiss" him or in this case presumably turn him into a vampire, but the misaki takes back control and burns herself up."

Lol, why so many 1/5 votes?
I don't get it, the art really stood out, it is beautiful, at least more than 80% of the latest releases. The direction was really something too, it just needs some more plot development to become solid (and Idk how can u people judge that when there's only one chap out). The soundtrack was really good as well.
I have my expectations high for this one, as a first chapter, it worked and got me interested in the anime. Now, hope it isn't only something pretty and hollow.

Salome was first made into a movie in 1923....a very nice tribute and the color scheme and somewhat sparse scenery draws a kind of parallel to that sets of that silent film.

Finally an interesting and artistic anime comes along and it gets dunked on? Ya'll got no taste.

Sure, the pacing of this 1st ep was a bit rushed and chaotic, but I'll gladly watch a show that takes risks and experiments with the narrative over something that doesn't. Will be sticking with this show.

Just for the A E S T H E T I C and atmosphere the episode is like 9/10, the cgi looks wonky at times, when bg people is walking in angles that's not normal to see.

The story looks like it's going to be a little bit of a slowburn, with some exposition peeking every now and then but not like in a infodump, but like in a silently way.

This is just really, really boring and almost makes me wish for something particularly objectionable to rant about. Vampires exist. Some actress a pretty boy twink vampire liked got turned into one and went a little crazy, but not crazy enough to kill anybody. After performing her little scene and meeting the main dude, she lets herself die. I'm not sure that her or the dude's face changed at any point in the episode. This is not a particularly animated or emotive show. Well, maybe the music, a little, but not much else. Definitely not like Twilight Maiden or Sankarea when it comes to evoking a sense of the supernatural. Just a couple stone-faced dudes, a kid dressed like a pirate, and a woman reciting theater in a setting that is not a stage.

I guess the major failing here (aside from the poor production and lacking direction) is that the woman's story isn't interesting enough to sell this as an episode of the week character study kind of affair, and they don't put any real effort into selling the master plot of "vampires exist and this dude studies them" either. Dude's just plain boring. Detatched, unemotional, uninvested, drifting from one scene to the next, always with the exact same expression on his boring, dumb face. It's not just that nothing really happens, it's that this is a boring, tedious, seemingly unmotivated and disinterested person who we're supposed to follow and be using as our surrogate to interacting with this world. So yeah, I'm pretty disinterested and uninvested too. Mission successful?

This was a very interesting first episode. Some jumpy editing here and there, but generally decent directing and honestly good photography. Ah, a vampire special forces unit against the vampiric crisis, eh? Then that colonel must be a vampire too, considering that female vampire won't hesitate to seduced him so much until she decided to incinerated herself out. Too strong aura? The little one look pretty much a vampire too, i think.

So, well, the premises and this headed start look cool enough and fine to be watched. But its surely left a strange feeling cause the way the art look is so classic, more like i am watching an old anime movie. Well, the year setting also an old one. So, its an understandable matter. The supposed op theme song sounded very standard, not having a big impact, the visual also fine. The story telling styles kinda bored me to doom, honestly. I hope its get an improvement by having more of engaging script, i dunno.

I think that's it for now. Not so convincing start, honestly. But the vampire grand premise actually sound very well enough to let my curiosity go wild to see the next chapter....

yes I agree with you, even seeing their discussions people enjoy it, so I think this is a bot's doing, I hope mod will fix it

If it is not a bot I really can't fathom such a statistic, I was also shocked.

Gave me Cowboy Bebop vibes with the art direciton. Class, class, class... felt like walking through an art gallery. Mars Red achieved a sophistication here in the first episode that is very hard to pretend to and easy to flub in a multitude of ways regardless of medium, film/anime/theatre/book - a fact demonstrated by how often this "classic" style is tried only to immediately produce such a concentration of big cheeseball energy that we can't help but guffaw and smh.

Interestingly, it would appear the vampire was in fact his fiance - who is now dead - incinerated by daylight in the square. Well then. I do have one complaint, about the Colonel's nemesis - why is he lit up like Shinji's bad boy crush from Evangelion? The one thing I felt came off as tacky and overdone, of the many bold risks they took to present a refined, cinematic experience marred only by the vibrating CGI wagons.

This was fucking cool - I hope it keeps the pace, they've certainly made a statement to start. Starts at a 10 for me.
