OP and ED of the season, for sure. Both very well-made in their own unique ways.

I was a little thrown by the more serious focus in places, but an adaptation this competent is the stuff of dreams. Gotta go back through when the simulcast drops to save every Miyamura expression UwU

Cute episode, we got a lot of character expressions that showed the personality of the cast. Hori in particular was fun to watch and this serves as an introductory episode.

The light comedy is there but it's going to take some time for the actual characters to develop from the story. That ED song caught me off guard though, quite unique imo.

AT LONG LAST, we didn't thought that we'd get Horimiya THIS SOON, but the rom-com of the season has finally come.

Pretty solid OP and ED, I'm already liking it. Especially the 3D visuals of the ED.

The perfect family girl Hori (voiced by Haruka Tomatsu) and the "creepy otaku" Miyamura (voiced by Kouki Uchiyama, e.g. Nisekoi's Raku Ichijou), INSTANT LOVE between the relationship of the two, hitting it off smoothly just like that. There are two sides of the coin to each and everyone: your outside life (which everyone knows) and the private facade life (those close to know).

Ishikawa is truly the intermediary to Hori's circle of friendship (and bearing a crush on her), but what a way to confess LOL (single, but coming back single). More drastically is the facade friendship, but it's pretty much a comedic state.

Expand the horizons, because we're in for a roller-coaster ride!

What a start to a great adaptation of HERO's manga, paired with CloverWorks's perfect translation, now I'm really hyped for more to come. Not gonna read the manga, because it's a close comparison!

Wasn't sure if this one would be sth for me but I really liked the start.

My thought after the first episode: Hori-san is a real wife. She really is a top tier wife. She cares about her family, she takes care of her little brother and she looks in the casual look much cuter.

They two really make a perfect pair together.

Definitely interesting ED animation, new stlye

Whew after all this years Horimiya anime is finally here. The first episode was really well done. It was pretty much adapted page by page.

Hori voiced by none other Haruka Tomatsu's just so sweet and Miyamura sounds pretty perfect voiced by Kouki Uchiyama. I already love the chemistry between them XD.

OP/ED both were nice. Visuals and animation were really good too, overall a great start to one of the most anticipated anime of this year. I'm hopeful for future episodes as well. Also it was just announced to be 13 episodes so it's gonna be a short ride but surely a fun one.

It's what i expected it to be which is a good thing.
I am looking forward to something a bit laid back and a possibility for romance and that seems to be the case.
Hopefully it will stay laid back, as for romance it doesn't really mater if something develops but it would be nice it's still to early to judge.

Anyway for now it's nice.

I loved everything about this episode. The visuals, art style, their VAs... everything was beautiful. I can see myself listening to the OP & ED many times, they were both great. I'm looking forward to the next Saturday.

I know this is a forum for writing reviews for the 1st episode but I rly need to know where I can watch it. After seeing the trend and hype in twitter I thought that I should watch the 1st episode despite my original plan of waiting until all episodes air. I checked where I usually watch anime but it wasn't there. Did it rly only air on Japanese television? Can I find it nowhere in the internet? If someone can help and enlighten me it would be very great. Thank you very much.

It's on Funimation.

It's also airing on Tokyo MX, GYT, GTV, BS11 and MBS.

Very solid start. As a manga reader, there is nothing about complain. Art and sound (especially voice acting) are godly. I love OP/ED.
I really hope this adaptation is succeed seriously. Because one of my favorite series including Hori-san to Miyamura-kun.

I must say, I didn't enjoy this as much as I think I would. Probably because there was no ost most of the time, and some of the magic in the manga was lost.

Was thinking what would Shaft do with this. Might turn out better than what I just saw. Not that I have a problem with CloverWorks. But something felt wrong with this adaptation.

As one of the few romance anime in this season and it is Horimiya. I hope the quality will not drop and also hope that this series will turn out to be one of the best.

The most wholesome romcom you could ever ask for is here!! This feels like a dream to habe Horimiya as a full fledged anime. Its soooooooo good. Warms my heart to the heavens. Hori and Miyamura are great leads in a show about people having a secret side to themselves they only show those whom are special to them. We see Hori the seemingly typical popular pretty girl who has it all, and we see Miyamura the seemingly typical gloomy nerdy guy who's a loner. While those two assessments might seem true from the outset we see throughout this very well done premiere thats not quite true at all.

Hori at home is very different from Hori at school. Taking care of her little brother, doing all the housework, all the cooking, she's almost complete opposite from her put together self at school. Miyamura looks like a totally different person outside of school, with his piercing and tattoos he's not the usual loner otaku we see in stories like these. The two of them coming together by pure chance of Miyamura being there when Hori younger brother Souta got hurt and walking him home to see the not so put together Hori. I love seeing them spend time together at her place, the two of them along with Souta make a perfect little family. Hori and Miyamura are so different but get along so well. Its a true testament to how we really don't know people until we take a closer look beyond the obvious facade.

There's tons of comedy too in this episode establishing that the writing is so strong to be able to go back and forth from serious to comedy like we saw at the end with Hori saying to Miyamura how she doesn't want him to stop coming over then head butting his chin. This will be a joy to watch every weekend.

There’s no tragedy but if they do (guessing they would) adapt Miyamura’s back story accurately it gets kind of sad & dark

It's... cute, but pacing is way too dawn fast lol. Feels like 3-4 eps are crammed into one.
It was the same in the manga or anime cut some content?

Overall, it's fine at best imo. Not as bad as something like Kanojo, Okarishimasu, but not as good as I excepted after reading some comments from the source material fans. Everything just happens too randomly to make me interested. OP/ED are mediocre too.

Hope that next eps will become better

A very nice premiere for the long-awaited adaptation of Horimiya. The visuals, while not the best look pretty good, and I enjoy the cute dynamic between Hori and Miyamura. Voice acting is good too with well known names like Kouki Uchiyama and Haruka Tomatsu playing the two titular main characters. My one gripe with the episode was the pacing with some stuff from the manga being cut or changed, but in the end I liked this premiere. This might be one of my favorites this season if it plays its cards right. Can’t wait for next week.

Absolutely fantastic.

It's been a long time since I read the manga so the exact events is a little blurred in my memory but the pacing feels very nice and I feel they were able to capture the atmosphere of the manga. The comedy is there, the simple but heartwarming slice of life is there, the heart is there. Very well done.
In fact, I think I'll go reread a bit.

Haruka Tomatsu really nailing it as Hori and Miyamura's voice fits him too.

Production and art are great too, I genuinely hope they can keep up this quality for the entire season. If so, this will probably become my favorite show of the season. My only issue would be that it's only 1 cour when there is enough material for 2 cour.

Overall, very promising adaptation and great start. Very excited to see more of Horimiya in animated form.

That was a great episode. Really really good. The writing is so strong too. As other were saying, navigating through some serious moments to comedy stuff so smoothly was on point.

Expanding a bit on the themes presented in this episode, though I'm far from being an expert on this, is that the Japanese culture has a concept of a person having an inner and an outer self, Honne and Tatemae, which is a mask, a facade that a person has for them to hide their "true nature" for society. So, both of our protagonists need to maintain their "public status" or "reputation" in the case of Hori and their realization about each other that they have the same "complex" life as their own is part of their development on this episode. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows will name that feeling as Sonder. Overall, yes, I really liked this episode.

Holy fuck sasuga Cloverworks, ngl was worried they would botch this one, but so far so good.

Comedy might have started off slowly, but I can't wait to see how it's gonna play out when all the cast gets introduces

Have to say though, the VA's I do prefer the ones from the OVA, not that these ones are bad, but the OVA ones did fit the characters better imo

Episode's spot-on, imo. To be honest, many of us knew that this was at least going to be good since the wonderful folks over at Cloverworks are handling this and it's exactly that and more!

Episode did feel a little on the fast side but no major cuts that come to mind at the moment. I doubt there'll be any given the 13-episode span to cover 40-odd chapters or so but here's to hoping the episodes don't feel as fast from next week onwards.

But that little niggle aside, what an episode! Animation is on the top of the mark and the Soundtrack is glorious too. Op and ED visuals go beyond the norm and provide with an interesting atmosphere and I just loved it!

As for the VA change, I'm totally on board with this. I love Matsuoka-san but Uchiyama-san's stellar voice just fits perfectly! Tsuda-san for the awkward Sensei is perfecto as well, lol.

I'm just so happy that this series is finally getting the love that it deserves. I'm usually not someone who's thinking far ahead but I really want a Season 2 announcement in May later this year and it would be especially fantastic if the same team remains for that.

It's been a while since I've read the manga but I think the pacing in the anime is just a little fast. Basically, no cuts but breezing through a few panels. With that said though, the manga isn't exactly slow either so take that however you will.

Edit: Screw it, I've decided to read the manga alongside the anime.

An incredibly anodyne episode for the most part. That its humor is primarily one of them screaming is certainly a rough edge, as is going right from one meet-cute to both their lives revolving entirely around the other while trying to claim that both have always lead full secret lives is also a conceit that's a bit hard to swallow. I would consider these incredibly minimal complaints for the people who like this kind of show though. Again, it's incredibly inoffensive, which makes it a little boring to talk about. The only conflict in the entire episode came from literally out of nowhere in the last three minutes of the episode, was just one of them feeling insecure, and resolved immediately. The rest was just… well, fluff. There were various seemingly setups for things, like the whole tattoo bit, but they never went anywhere. It wasn't particularly corny. Nor particularly screamy. Not too boring. Just fluff without any major ups, downs, troughs or swells, build-ups or climaxes.
