THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Since many people were referring to Akagi while watching Kaiji, I finally deicded to watch this show as well.

Show looks good. I just don't like the 'I-know-everything narrator'.

really odd artwork, can't say I'm a fan. It was entertaining, but I think it might be moreso if I actually knew how to play mahjong...

The art is fugly. I think I can learn how to play Mahjong, even if it's a little bit, from this. Hope I get used to the drawing style.

Akagi doesn't look 13. He looks more like he's in his late older teens or early twenties to me.

I like the artwork

Really odd artwork, but I kind of like it. It has it's own style. I think I will read the basic rules of mahjong before continuing watching.

Yeah, not a fan of the artwork as of now, but am loving the similar feeling of watching this like One Outs. In terms of Mahjong.. I really don't have any idea what is going on as of now.. but hopefully as the anime goes on I will come to understand it a bit more

That's a consequence of Akagi being a prequel to Ten. In Ten he's much older and already well-known as the legend who ruled the Mahjong underworld.

He squares off with the previous holder of the title, Soga, who came out of retirement for a special occasion which is a big Mahjong showdown that will determine the future of the game.

not as good as Kaji IMO but that's probably cause I watched that series first and I know absolutly nothing about the game of mahjong so yeah. Why does that cop want Akagi so bad? and how is he so dam good so fast? IDK, but I will continue with this series in hopes of some epic moments none the less.

Being a fan of Kaiji, I have to watch this.

I know nothing about mahjong but I hope I'll understood more of it as the eps pass.

And can't believe he's only 13. O_o

Count me as another person watching this after seeing Kaiji!

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, considering I know the basics of mahjong, but always thought it was far more luck-based than, say, poker.

From what I've played of mahjong, you can read into what tiles your opponent is taking, and what tiles they probably need, but... you can't really do much about it. Even if you know that discarding a tile might help someone else win if they take it, if you actually want to win yourself you'll still have to discard it in the hopes of getting the tile -you- need... so... outside of switching the tiles, I'm wondering what kind of antics will ensue in this series!

Either way, I always welcome nonsensical dramatic gambling :3

In a game full of cutthroats looking to take a man's life, a true genius uses every possible method available to obtain victory.

When the stakes are that high and the odds stacked so strongly against you, you've got to be willing to employ every possible method at your disposal in order to survive...

...even if the tactics are viewed as unsavory by others.

Haven't seen Kaiji yet, but I wanna start with Akagi since it was broadcast first.

This is 13 years after Pacific war, so we can say it's close to Japan in the 60's.

Great setup, I like characters like Akagi, to tell you the truth, he reminds me a lot of One Outs, Tokuchi Toua, and that guy is an epic badass if I've ever seen one.

Smart series so far, I'm continuing.

Don't like the character designs/art, but alright otherwise

Why does that cop even care about Akagi? I know what he did was illegal and dangerous, but it was basically a suicide pact between two idiots and either he's learned his lesson, or he'll soon be dead and not the cop's problem any more.

Also, why wouldn't the Yakuza just wait till the cops left and then kill Akagi and the guy he was playing for?

Was really hoping they'd take the Hikaru no Go approach of making the game interesting without requiring you to really understand the finer details, but its not looking like that will be the case.

hmm... so he starts off his mahjong ... career, as it were, by deliberately cheating his way to victory?

Well, how else would one expect an absolute beginner to beat veterans who probably do this sort of thing a lot?
There is no such thing as shit taste. Only idiots who think everyone should have the same taste as they do.

Before going into Akagi, I took two days to learn the basics of mahjong, playing computer opponents until I could win about half of the games. And of course, the first thing Akagi does is cheat his way to victory with the highest amount of smugness.

I think I'm going to love this show.

I never know what's going on when people in anime play Mahjong so maybe this one will help :) Also, that is one mature 13 year old O_O Looks like he's at least in his 20s haha.

started to watch this first than that of overhyped kaiji anime.

This one was adapted from very old manga so I thought they did well to convert the tense moment from manga to anime using similar art style. The soundtrack surprisingly relaxing ^^ I kinda like the atmosphere(nostalgia anyone?) and episode ended cliffhanger that is much appreciated! This will help me to watch another asap ^^

Overall nice start!
