I thought of this topic because I have been watching Hyouka and I knew prior to starting it that Hyouka is the Japanese word for Ice cream and before watching I thought "Why the fuck is this anime called ice cream?" So what are some anime titles that make no sense until you watch it.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas.

In the beginning, you think this might be a horror anime until you look at the cover and genres and realize that it isn't.

Many of titles are actually like this, for example Monster. People normally will think some ugly and terrifying alien lifeform when heard the word "monster".

ghost in the shell
darling in the franxx
both follow the format of "thing in the thing" and you wouldn't know what those things are if you haven't watched the anime

As someone else said, doesnt that go for majority of titles? I'm actually having trouble thinking of an anime with a title that does make sense even if you've haven seen the show. So far without looking around on MAL, the only ones that come to mind would be Prison School, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, and Arakawa Under the Bridge. Maybe Tower of God as well

Bleach

Up to this day, I still haven't figured out the point of the title or even the intent behind it even after finishing the anime and the manga.

Oh wait, that wasn't the question.
I guess something like Naruto, Inuyasha, etc... if anyone's not that familiar with Japanese names then stuff like that can be confusing.

Fruits Basket. I had zero idea why it was called that until I watched the show. I quite like the title but I still think it's a fairly obscure reference for it. Something relating to the zodiac would be more fitting if you ask me.

Punch Line.
I thought it was a series about witty comedy, then I realized it's a wordplay (or something like that) with panchira and that explained the abundance of panties.

Even funnier - the actual story in Punch Line is pretty tragic and the comedy + ecchi elements are for mood whiplash.

The majority of anime have weird names that make little sense if you never watched the show and if the title is also butchered English even less so. Attack on Titan makes no sense one way or the other. Ghost in the Shell makes also no sense without knowing that Ghost = Soul or Consciousness. Neon Genesis Evangelion was already mentioned. Other shows that I can think right from the bat:

Fruits Basket
Toradora
Your Lie in April
Clannad
Serial Experiment Lain
Bungou Stray Dogs
Ergo Proxy
K-on!
One Piece
Mob Psych 100
Usagi Drop (still don't know why it is called that way)

And I didn't even try hard.

Aren't most of the people missing the point and just listing nonsensical titles and not ones that eventually make sense.

Toradora is a good one with it meaning tiger v dragon.

Blast of Tempest; I watched it thinking it would probably cover a storm or something by the 'tempest' on its title, and was in for a treat when it actually refered to The Tempest by Shakespeare...

I'm gonna say Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? here. Before watching this anime, I thought this was gonna be some harem-fanservice anime about girls in dungeons. Turns out after watching this anime, I realised that this anime is your typical isekai anime, farming for money/gems at dungeons etc.

Isn't that Fate/Zero just mean that it is Fate/stay night's prequel story ? Just like No Game No Life Zero and Steins Gate 0 although Fate/Zero used that term far before them.
What is Perfect Blue title mean anyway ?

The one that immediately came to mind is FLCL. At first I was confused about why exactly would a show's title just be random letters, then I found out it's actually supposed to be read as Fooly Cooly which really didn't help, and then I wacthed the show. Well the title's still a bit confusing but at the same time it somehow makes sense now.

Well, think about the phrase "feeling blue". It's kind of a metaphor for "feeling sad/depressed"

I think most anime are like this nowadays. Some days ago, I talked with a girl that tried to recommend Bungou Stray Dogs to a friend. She said "He was like... Okay, where are the dogs? I only see people!". I had to laugh, but I guess this mistake is more common than we think.
