Askeladd from Vinland Saga is easily one of, if not, my most favourite villains of all time. Hell, I don't even know if you can simply call him an antagonist or a villain because he's A LOT more than that. He's not just a villain just for the sake of being a villain and that's why I love him.
Freeza from DBZ,
Wamuu from JoJo part 2,
Kira Yoshikage from JoJo part 4,
King Bradley from FMA:B,
Overhaul from Boku no Hero,
Not at anime yet, but Funny Valentine from JoJo part 7.

Askeladd is more protagonist than Thorfinn, haha.

There are a lot of good villains to chose from, but my all time favorite is Kaiki Deishu from Nisemonogatari, hands down.
He's great because he's got such a unique personality and a brush off way of tearing apart any argument, all while being unimpressed and despicable about it. He's not really a villain, more like an anti-hero, but he sticks out in my mind like a sore thumb.
1. Meruem from Hunter x Hunter. His character was a beautiful device for contrast and understanding that comes from the Chimera Ant Saga. Overall the arc's vast usage of contrast made me love this character, and even the first time that I watched Hunter x Hunter I didn't really understand that, because well I was a young teenager.
His death made me cry both times I watched the anime.
2. The Black Organization from Detective Conan. Their very presence being mysterious is part of what makes them so interesting. Basically ANY time that they are mentioned, I jump in excitement. Also because I have a love for 80s and 90s anime with badass shady or organization characters. God, I love 80s and 90s anime.
3. Hody Jones from One Piece. I know, one of everyone's least favorites, but not mine... Him having no motive behind his ways is exactly why I loved his character. It adds to why I love One Piece for it's world so much more, it makes the world of One Piece seem so much less linear to know that in its world exists characters that want to have power for the sake of it. I know, it probably sounds lame to others, but not me. It's a genuinely interesting curveball for him as a villain, and Oda showing that he'll break the mold for certain characters, once again, makes the One Piece world feel much more intricate.
4. Senor Pink from One Piece. His backstory is by far the best villain backstory in One Piece for me. His never-ending persistence coming from a place of love... and it made him dressing as a baby go from funny and awkward "ahh, typical One Piece character!" to genuinely making Senor Pink seem like no bullshit. He's so... hard-boiled.
5. Katakuri from One Piece. Every moment of this character was truly amazing. From finding similarities between him and Luffy, to despite being loyal to his mother, knowing
how unreasonable her actions are and wishing the best for Luffy after his defeat.
6. Eggman from Sonic the Hedgehog. I know, "not anime"... but Sonic X. His depiction in the anime (Sonic X), and how much we see of him in its final arc really solidified Eggman as one of my favorite anime villains.
Also, all of the "playful" or expressive villains like Enel, Sugar, Porche and Vander Decken (LOL) are some of my other favorite One Piece villains.

Toguro because not so many villains are able to create the amount of hype that he crated.
Dia Brando in part 1 for being a villain with an personal story with the main character.
Aizen/Diavolo: Such mysterious characters, too bad that booth of them ARE SUPER BUSTED to the point of not being defeatable before the plot device.
Griffith/Akainu: Because you cannot actually say that you actually hate them because they did something wrong, well... almost like that except.....
As for Rival that are something different than a villain IMAO.
Sasuke Uchiha: Has a pretty relatable past with the main character, except that re actually lived with his family before losing it, would Naruto be filled with hate too if he was on sasuke place? also Sasuke becomes a better main character than Naruto itself from shippuden onwards.
Tao Ren:Who's never passed during an edgelord phase?
Seto Kaiba: Yes, i spend a lot of money on a child card game, yes i lose to budget decks, how did you know? Jokes apart Kaiba is one of the hyest characters n anime IMAO.
Katakuri from One Piece. He wanted to face his every enemy head on and one more thing, his love for donuts.
"When they're alive, you can enjoy watching them struggle. When they're dead, you can enjoy tearing out their guts. Tales are things you get to enjoy twice."
Enrico Pucci from JoJo's Stone Ocean (part 6), Shishio from Rurouni Kenshin, Menthuthuyoupi from Hunter X Hunter, Younger Toguro from Yu Yu Hakusho, Pain from Naruto, Johann from Monster, and Griffith from Berserk.
Shishio Makoto of Samurai X he introduce me to the concept of survival of the fittest (darwinism) "the strong shall live and the weak shall die" in society its not literally obviously but "social death" can happen
Envy and Greed from FMAB, Itachi, Pain, and Zabuza from Naruto, Grimmjow from Bleach strictly cause character design, Zeref from Fairy Tail cause I'm a sucker for tragic backstories, and Meruem from HxH
if i were to make a top five would probably turn out like this, without order tho
Aizen from Bleach
Doflamingo from One Piece
Ryo from Devilman Crybaby
The Major from Hellsing Ultimate
Phantom Troupe from HxH - I Mean if u want 1 guy would be meruem, but the Phantom Troupe are my favorite HxH villains and my favorite villain group ever
Askeladd from Vinland Saga is easily one of, if not, my most favourite villains of all time. Hell, I don't even know if you can simply call him an antagonist or a villain because he's A LOT more than that. He's not just a villain just for the sake of being a villain and that's why I love him.
He's considered a villain but not really a villain if you think about it. Like if you think about what his motives were, and what he has done.. it doesn't really make him a villain if you know what I mean
Johan Liebert from Monster. Dude was so evil and calculating and yet had this bizzare charm to him that i couldn't shake off. He also had one of the most messed up and tragic backstories i've ever seen from a villian.
Griffith from Berserk is also up there. Despite all the shit he did to Guts and Casca, he also had a weird charisma to him, and he understood what it meant to be a leader and to inspire respect and admiration in his comrades.
first of all the word you are looking for is antognist not villian
my favourites are-
Meurem from hunter x hunter
Phantom Troupe from hunter x hunter
Goku black from DBS League of villians from my hero academia
Hakamada, Suishou from Granbelm or Airi from Queen's Blade
They are my favourites and have one thing in common .When they win they show their superiority by sucking the other girls tongue,,,YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES
Imo that is the perfect lesbian villain . I dont like killing! Is better when the loser get some french kissing instead! And its fun for me, My lesbian angels should kiss not kill each other
Ahh the villain, never ending topic that containt half of it's anime, one of the many thing that made anime villain to be the best is because of their entrance and introduction that will create hight tense of atmosphere and game changing story'.
1. Hisoka Morrow (Hunter X Hunter). Every time he showed up the atmosphere became more tense
2. Meruem (Hunter X Hunter). Yes it hxh again, the main villain of the best arc in anime ever "The Chimera Ant Arc"
3. Donquixote Doflamingo (One Piece). Pure evil, that's it!
4. Uchiha Madara (Naruto Shippuden). Madara will teach you how to introduced overpower anime villain properly lol.
5. Askeladd (Vinland Saga). I never thought that one day the antagonist of the show will be as good as him
For me I like villains who really amps up the story or villains who gives more meaning to the story
Kid Gaara and Madara(Naruto) - Gaara made Naruto's character meaningful. Madara just has the most badass character reveal and his ideals are good too
Stain(Bnha) - this guy showed a lot of meaning behind the hero world and the general concept of being a hero in bnha.
Mama(Promised Neverland) - she really put the main characters into a corner everytime they find a way to escape into such situations. This makes the characters feel like their on tight rope for a whole 12 episodes, with one mistake you're dead.
Gendo Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion. I love the mysterious and intimidating aura around him, while the writers don't make him act cliché or edgy. They made sure that he had reasons for all of his actions while not just giving you everything there is to know about him in plain sight, so you can dig into his character and find out more about him.
my favourite character list is almost full of them : here they are. the 3 bests are griffith, hisoka and makishima.
not mentionned a lot but still great :
-mozgus from berserk
-kirei and gilgamesh from fate zero
-Torkell from vinland saga
-Doflamingo use to be popular but I don't hear from him often
-satou from ajin, in fact not that much of an exeptional villain but I really like him and what he does.
this is a list of all my favourite characters.
n°1 ex aequo: Hisoka/griffith, n°3: Makishima
favourite ever
Berkerk: Griffith Hunter x Hunter: hisoka Psycho pass: Makishima Shougo
great
Hunter x Hunter: Meruem, Chrollo (+Hisoka up there)
