Do it but in my opinion the manga goes downhill after like 20 volumes. Still its worth reading until that point at least and the arc from the 1997 anime is much better in the manga.

the anime cut out a lot of stuff, it would really be better if you started with Chapter 1

Start at volume 1, not chapter 1.

Black Swordsman arc is listed with letters instead of numbers for some reason. Then read everything else. EVERYTHING.

Only if you don't consume fictions to get a story (since this is inconclusive)

Start from chapter 89 where the anime left off, continue on till chapter 94, then read chapters A0-H0 before resuming with chapter 95.

Oh, and STAY AWAY FROM THE 2016 ANIME!

Why would you advice him to skip volumes?

ummm...because all that stuff was already covered in the anime and it would be redundant to go through it again??

No, tons of stuff was skipped or changed. You don't know what you're talking about...

I think he can save it for later, since the 1997 anime is still very much fresh in his mind. Reading what is essentially an extended version of a story you just recently finished can be a bit taxing.

Watching a summary of the story in another format by other creators does not replace the actual story. If you find it taxing you can't be a real Berserk fan. Just saying.
