What is the difference between a 9 and a 10 out of 10, personally speaking?
I ask this, because I've been having serious difficulties ranking my favorite anime. I love Baccano a lot, enough to give it a 9, but a 10? I'm not sure.
Meanwhile, I have little doubt about giving Kaiji a 10.
I rate based on how much I like an anime, NOT whether I think it's good or not.

My rating ;)

10/10 → Same as 9/10. It has some very minor flaws here and there but must to get on my emotions on a level that i can´t describe. All things considered it still deserves MY masterpiece statue.

9/10 → Amazing. Something that I consider to be amazing and executed excellently, though not exactly perfect. Need to have a good conclusion or feel complete. Highest ranking if not special to ME on a personal level.

8/10 → Great. An anime/manga that excels in many fronts and that succeed in what was trying to accomplish.

** To get 8 and above it must engage me in the plot and drag me in. Like i want not to stop watch and can marathon it easy (if I have time). After the episode is done i must want to click on the next one. Good composition with music, art and voice acting. And have some originality from other shows and character development.**

I used to dish out 10's but everything has flaws; everything could hypothetically be better. I don't want to give people the impression I think a given show is "perfect"
There is absolutely no reason why I should accept "turn your brain off" as a valid excuse to defend a poor show.

10s are something special, and a score that I don't give too often. 10s are 9s that had that "something more" that connected with me. They are great, I enjoyed them and would watch them again! Even to this date, with every new show completed, I second guess 10s given, but most likely don't ever revoke.

Hope this helps, but ultimately, enjoy what you watch!

I mostly give 10s to my favourites with a few exceptions.

9s I give to anime I loved, but I don't consider them worthy of a 10? Something like that.

When scoring I usually just go with my gut.

My rating system:
10: Masterpiece, has a strong plot, and character development, (not necessarily perfect)...
9: Worthy enough to be a masterpiece (10)
Couple of flaws which are hardly worth noting...

For me 9 and a 10 is like a 6 or 7. Both are kinda hard for me to differentiate and explain properly. 6 and 7s are like eh shows while 9 and 10s are like really great shows.

I guess at the end of the day if I feel like giving it a 9 ill give it a 9 if i feel like it deserves a 10 then ill give it just that.

Anime that I scored 9 and 10 are both my favourites, but I consider the ones that I scored 10 as works of art that truly impressed me and are some of the best that the animation industry has to offer, while the 9's are just outstanding with minor flaws, if at all. However, I like some 9's more than 10's for various reasons and put them higher in my list.

Very easy man, the answer is: = - 1

Joke aside, I don't know, you just know it. In fact to me is way easier to identify whether something is a 10 or a 9 than identifying whether something is an 8 or a 7.

An anime that I rated a 9 is an overall excellent watch. (I think it's a 10)

An anime that I rated a 10 is an anime I rated a 9 + my personal bias. (It's a 10)

For a 9 to become a 10, the anime needs to "click" with me. It needs to have that X Factor where I will not question my rating. An anime can have the most stunning animation, flawless writing, the most epic music, and the greatest art, yet I may only give it a 9 because it didn't have that spark, that element to convince me to give it a 10. When I find an anime deserving of a rating of 10, I will know.

9: I didn't realise it was possible to do that sort of thing so well (for a thing which is well worth doing).

10: I am flabbergasted that it's possible to do that sort of thing so well.

It's nothing to do with "perfection". Perfection generally makes things good, but it often doesn't make them great.

10/10 = 9/10 basically in terms of quality.

10/10 - Anime with minor flaws that resembles my personal taste. (genre, concept, plot...)

10s are reserved for things that I not only love but that have effected me on a personal level. As far as I'm concerned even if something is flawed if it can do that for me then it's art at its best and I will vouch for it. 9 is for what I consider the best of the best aside from that. It must have at least some ambition with the story its trying to tell. 8s are also extremely high for me, and I save that for my favorites that I think are excellent but short of being a masterpiece.

While 9 is close to being a masterpiece, there's something that makes it fall short of being perfect in my eyes.
10 means I easily regard it as a masterpiece, heads and shoulders above all the rest.

An 8 is for me a Great show
9 is something amazing that I would rewatch even multiple times
And a 10 is just a little bit above the shows I rated 9 but that doesn't mean it's perfect because I have yet to encounter a flawless show

Hard to quantify that, some anime just make me feel 'OMG THIS IS 10/10!!' and others I just love the shit out of in a more calm way. There's usually gonna be at least one or two scenes of absolute greatness, and one of them will trigger the score change and unless afterwards the anime starts screwing up, I'll usually stick with the 10/10 from then on. Sp basically the difference is just the 1 or 2 or 3 scenes that really make it go over the top and make me want to give the anime even more praise than I was already giving it.
I probably regret this post by now.

Everything above a 5 is somewhat good for me and vice versa for below 5. 5 being dead average. I usually award 10's to shows that are really high quality but also connected with me personally, kinda like special 9's. Differentiating between single numbers can be hard though, I say go with your gut, it's all your choice anyway.

10: I loved it without question, there's no inherent problems with it, or it's near perfect.
9: I loved it through the roof, but there is a problem with it (Nana doesn't have a very good ending, xxxHolic's animation is questionable, Ergo Proxy can be confusing)

Though it's, to some extent, arbitrary. It's like pointing to an orange-to-red gradient and asking "Where does orange end and red begin?" It's going to be different for each show, let alone each person. Give Higurashi a score, and then later, if you change your mind, change it. I often waffle between the scores myself. At first, I gave Devilman: Crybaby a 10, then changed it to a 9, then changed it back to a 10 a few weeks later. At first I gave Texhnolyze a 10, then changed it to a 9. Just go with your gut. That's the best advice I can give.

Difference in a 9.5 and 10/10 with Jojo part 4 is basically Okayasu dropped the score by 0.5. I thank God every day that Okayasu's VA (Wataru_Takagi) stopped being Zoro's VA for One Piece after the pilot.

His VA isn't the only issue with him, but no spoilers for OP.

The difference is usually just enjoyment. Maybe said series deserved a 10, but didn't receive that ranking because I simply didn't enjoy it that much despite being objectively good in terms of writing and animation. Maybe a few characters that I didn't like that had way too much screen time etc. Many relatively small factors goes into consideration. But ultimately it's just entertainment, and people have different expectations and perception of flaws.

9 (nine /naɪn/) is the natural number following 8 and preceding 10. Nine is the highest one-digit number.

10 (ten /ˈtɛn) is an even natural number following 9 and preceding 11. Ten is the base of the decimal numeral system, by far the most common system of denoting numbers in both spoken and written language. The reason for the choice of ten is assumed to be that humans have ten fingers (digits).

Very much this! It is far easier to differentiate between 10's and 9's, but 7/6 and 3/4 are much harder for me to identify. For me I generally rate based on enjoyment like this.

A 9 is something that had me hooked from start to finish with no major complaints.

A 10 is basically the 9 criteria but also has an emotional affect on me. Considering I rarely get emotional watching anime this is pretty rare, only around 1/100 of my completed.

10/10= It was emotionally and intellectually rich. It challenged my expectations. The story was great. The characters were great. The The writing, direction, sound, visuals were on point. I found the story to be unique. The show or film stayed with me long after it was over. It was actually about something that I can apply to my everyday life.

9/10: It's about the same requirements for a 10/10. The only difference is that excitement waned quicker.

8/10: It was a really good to great show. Very interesting and there was some emotion in it. But, it missed out on a certain level of depth that would really send it over the top.

In my opinion, nothing is perfect. So when I rate something 10/10, that means the show is very close to perfection and has very few, or minor, flaws. 9/10 is more reserved towards anime that have more than a few flaws - some of which might not be minor.

The differences between 9 and 10 would be 1 apart because

9 + 1 =10

Therefore, we can conclude that, 9 and 10 are 1 apart each other.

that's how I see it, I gave most of my favourites a 9 because they weren't very close to perfection.

I don't give it too much thought. I guess the difference lies in how I perceive the flaws and how present they are in my overall experience and judgement of the show. For every individual 10 or 9 I have my own thoughts and they are not perfect equivalences.
