Souichi is annoying. And boring. In the middle of the episode I wanted to close the video window. But I liked the doll part. The gore thing ends the episode well.

Not a smart choice to start the series. The creators are probably huge fans of Junji Ito`s work but a lot of people will be discouraged to continue.

I liked the episode - it has a digusting, grotesque feeling. Typical for Ito. I am not a big fan of comedy episodes but still prefer those to pseudo-horror gore shit like Ousama Game(oh noes we need to kill our friends).

The last segment was amazing. This could be a good idea. A longer story and the one or two oneshots - a lot of content in one episode. Seems legit.

Oh god, they're starting out with the Souchi stories? Urrgh this is going to be rough, since it was Ito's first attempt at an ongoing storyline - and frankly I think they're some of the weakest stories he's ever written. Hopefully we'll get to see more from his Gyo series soon, otherwise I might have to stop watching for a while..

Kind of done already -> https://myanimelist.net/anime/10417/Gyo Quite good, people hated it though.

not bad but kind of a weird way to start things in all honesty like it feels like a filler episode of an already established series.

The Doll part though that shit looks creepy.

I guess this is going to be the one anime I watch just for laughs and a bit of cringing...because that's what I did. The doll episode seems like it's gonna be kinda gross looking at times but I'm sure I'll be able to handle it.

Didn’t find this appealing but I’ll stick around to see if they’ll animate the Couch scene in that one chapter.

The only accurate tag is supernatural, kind of.
I was expecting some fucked up shit and got a dull boring attempt at comedy.
gonna drop this one.

aaaaand you're just missing the other tags that's in the 2nd episode

We wont get Uzumaki in this adaptation since it's a stand alone series not part of Itou Horror Comic Collection

Unfortunately I'm one of those people who didn't like it. A single 1hr10m OVA was a poor way to try to adapt it IMO.

I would've agreed with you if there weren't
in the opening, it could go either way at this stage.

I get what you're saying but the Souichi stories are completely different than stuff like Gyo or Tomie. The whole Souichi stuff is more of just a black comedy with horror elements about the character and his stories (like the two haunted house stories). Gyo, Tomie, Uzumaki, and Black Paradox are actual storylines.

There will at least be a Tomie series, I'm sure there will be others if Tomie is well received. https://myanimelist.net/anime/36992/Tomie

Why is there no good horror anime that isn't just "DUDE GORE LMAO" besides Boogiepop Phantom? smh. The model story was so cliche I expected some sort of swerve because it was too on the nose cliche, but nope. Ah well. Horror is my favorite entertainment medium and it's annoying how there's so few of it in anime.

I really love Ito Junji, but this first episode was absolutly dissapointed.
But of course I'll give it a chance and I'm going to see 2 or 3 episodes more before say anything ñ_ñ

I understand your point. Was not a good adaptation but was quite enjoyable movie on its own. Some my friends that are not into anime totally love the B-horror vibe. Could be better though, i agree.

Yeah I know that the Souichi stories are meant to be played for laughs, but that doesn't mean that I have to think they're not a complete waste of time and a horrible way to open this series touted as "Being from the legendary horror visionary Junji Ito!". If the episode score is any indication, it's left a pretty bad first impression because it's not what people were expecting/wanted from a horror series. But that's just my 2 cents.

I am looking forward to Black Paradox being animated too however 😎.

I really enjoyed this, I read some of the Souichi stories a while back and thought it was meh, but the anime was better, the VA suited him perfectly.

I think I'm in the minority but I actually really loved the Souichi segment. The blend of the perfect VA (seriously, that was superb), the fun and ooky-spooky BGM and the black humour just really worked for me.

It maybe wasn't the "strongest" way to open the series but I really enjoyed it.

The first episode was pretty funny Souichi is that ugly, creepy kid in everyone's class. I remember having a classmate like that. They even look the same.

I was kind of disappointed that Souichi didn't really die. Poor frog. :(

I felt like they spent too much time on Souchi's story that the doll girl's story didn't have much time left.

Loved the OP and the ED was pretty good as well. I love Junji Ito's works, his manga series are gold and I eat them up like M&Ms. I hope we'll see Red Turtleneck and his other creepier works too.

I’m so baffled I didn’t hear about this anime sooner as Junji Ito is definitely my favorite mangaka. Very exciting though that they’ve decided to adapt his horror collection because it has so many great stories.
I think the first episode was a bit lackluster. I enjoyed it, but I feel that they didn’t start off the series with the best story they could have chosen. It seemed like an episode that would have aired in the middle of the season to me. But it was cool and interesting to see Souichi’s extra ass self come to life, and he was sorta “the face” of Ito’s horror collection, so what can ya do. I’m really glad this was made.

Well I really thought this episode was hilarious, Souichi is such a weirdo and I like his older brother. I guess if he actually killed the people he cursed (since he has no reason to curse them lol) I wouldn't like him but since he doesn't it is enjoyable. Anyways looking forward to the next episodes, they look creepy.

I have to admit that the Souchi arc was pretty much my least favorite in the horror collection but I really liked the first episode~ I somehow expected it to be a flop like other recent horror anime but the score looks pretty deceiving to me so far hahah

It really did the manga justice and even managed to make it more enjoyable despite being more on the comedy. I haven't read the doll chapter but it looks like the whole point of the story was presented nicely.

Rockin' opening~

I love the OP its to bad the first episode was with that nails kid. I read the books and I hated those stories and I thought maybe in animation it would be more enjoyable and boy was I wrong. Hell the last few minutes were the best part of this episode.

It's Studio Deen, i'm already set my expectations low but this is even lower.

ngl the episode not even scary at all up until the ending part with the doll.
i'm actually laughing for the most part, am i watching comedy show? lol

even the Ending Song Visual are more scary.

Damn Junji Ito deserve better than this.
Hopefully next year Junji Ito: Maniac on Netflix.

Having read "all" of Junji Itou's works, and watching the disappointing anime of Gyo,
Finally deciding to watch the Junji Itou collection anime adaption, I'm very surprised at how adequate this was.

It's only the first episode and the adaption of a Souichi story and Hellish Doll Funeral which would be difficult to produce badly, but nonetheless I expected worse and am still pessimistic of the upcoming rest.
Although, this was genuinely fairly good as an adaption of these two stories.

The soundtrack is well chosen is producing the appropriate atmosphere, the art and animation is very consistent and well, while the flow of the story is proper as well.
There's something about the art that is flat, and the animation in the scenes of "action" could be more extravagant in style/lighting, but it's not bad at all even if it isn't vibrant.

Hellish Doll was good. Simple yet fun in the classic fashion that Itou creeps us out with his horror.
The only glaring issue and critism off this episode for me is the voice actor for Souichi.
He's undebatably a very poor casting choice for Souichi.

To me, which may be overlooked and unnoticed to most fans, and has never been overly explored with a redemption or an understanding to Souichi's attitude in the Souichi franchise till this day...
Is how he's a troubled young teenager who's seeking love and attention in his own deranged way by harrassing people, including his family with his voodoo.

So, the voice of an old creepy man does not fit my image of a troubled young preteen at all.
The cast direction and interpretation of Souichi from Yuuji Mitsuya was very bad and I'm disappointed that he's returning for the new anime.
The English Dub voice actor of Souichi isn't much better either, but Yuuji's is awful.

Story-wise, while Souichi isn't a top favorite of mine from Junji Itou, he's still a favorite overall.
What captivates me is his identity and the odd dynamic and reality he has of somewhat being neglected by his family while he enjoys tormenting many.
Technically though, nails in his mouth, spitting them like darts, and his variety of voodoo tricks is quite entertaining.

My favorite moments from this chapter specifically are the moments where his big brother creates fear from him by chasing Souichi with a spider, tormeting his classmate as a giant spider, being saved by his brother, and his spider illusion.
6.5/10.
