I can imagine this series won't be for everyone.

It looks like it's going to be a tear-jerking drama. What a beautiful depressing atmosphere.

She wants to understand the meaning of the Major's last words. Prepare tissues.

Obviously I'm not going to get into major spoilers, but it's not going to be THAT dramatic or sad. You can safely put your excess box of tissues away.

I have finished the ep1 just now from Bilibili.

What makes me feel amazing most is not the animation, which we have known would be excellent, but its sound and music.
When you guys watch it, plz take a good earphone :D

btw, the animation is better than most anime moive (Gekijo version) I have seen.

Disappointment of the season for sure. I was told there is gorgeous animation, but it's just foggy instagram filters. It was boring as hell, at least OST is good. Will see, what's coming up next.

Ok. They reduced A LOT of the novel's content.
Disappointed that they got rid of the majority of Hodgins' interactions with Violet in the hospital.
BUT I'm happy that there included some extra content about her recruitment to the postal company.

So far the novel has been adapted not really well, I'd say.

Definitely not for everyone.

The story and characters weren't that interesting enough for me to feel a thing about the ending and my expectation was not high tbw. But at least everything else can be appreciated enough for me to looking forward to her development.

The anime may not live up to many people's hype (I can see people will just say it's another generic story), but it sure lived up to my hype!
I am pretty excited to know what's coming next as KyoAni didn't really show too much about Violet.

To be fair, Kyoto animation is known for changing the story for their anime adaptation. Chuunibyo is one clear example. At least they didn't change it too much, which is good.

I noticed that they changed a few things too. I hope they don't end up changing anything big. One thing in particular that I'm worried they might change is the whole

But judging from the dialogue in the trailers, they seem to be keeping that intact.

Finally finished watching.

I don't care about pretty color stuff (and bunch of crappy CGI) at all, but this anime can be good with all the lifestyle transition from war and stuff, but Violet just really really bother me. Her whole character is way way too over dramatized and unrealistic with all the very machine/robot/stiff composure, 0 social skill/common sense and her overall autistic behavior. She is going to ruin the whole anime, worst kuudere i've ever seen.

Also minor thing, It bothers me how Hoggins keep shouting "Violet-chan!" when it's obviously set in fictional britain or old europe, totally unfitting.

I just wanted to smack Gilbert's older brother, whoever he is, for telling Violet that she was Gilbert's dog. But that alone made her pick the dog plushy! <3

Also, if Claudia really thought that up on the spot seeing how everything about Gilbert was absolute to Violet, I am pretty impressed. Loved it how she became more and more obedient to Claudia. I could already see noticeable development in her character in this episode alone.

I don't care how and what you guys think but this was absolutely gorgeous. And I don't give a damn about that platonic romance that was mentioned in the synopsis of the original novel. I am now 110% sure it was never platonic.

I have not read the novel but Kyoto Animation owns the intellectual property so I don't mind if they tweak the story here and there in order to make it better. As long as they don't butcher it like Musaigen, I am all good! And judging by the first episode, I am already gonna go ahead and give the anime a 9/10 at this point which is rare from me. Usually I wait until a few more episodes are in. I might change the score later on based on the progression.

It's anything unlike Kyoto Animation has animated so far. My hype is real!

To be honest I expected more. Dunno how to put it in words, but art seems to be overdone. Of course it is not looking bad in any way, but it's just... too overloaded. Can't say anything about story yet. KyoAni are masters of 'playing with emotions' so I still have pretty high expectations.

I agree, aside beautiful art style, Violet bothers me too. I mean, I've never seen Soldiers being such airheads like she does, I don't know if it is some sort of trauma or something like that, but it doesn't work that well.

Agree again, "Violet-chan" seems really unfitting

That was an alright start tbh, animation looks as good as expected but I don't feel impressed so far, the drama was fine but we barely know a thing about them so it didn't really hit me, this was an introduction to the setting so there is still a lot of room for the story to get interesting anyways.

Just watched the animation this afternoon, its animation definitely pairs up with or even better than most of the animated movies. The first episode is just the beginning so I hope its quality can last until the end. If you read the light novel, you will realize they skip a bit of the content and I think it makes the reader hard to understand what's going on at such a fast pace, it seems like a showoff of it gorgeous animation but the story development might be a bit weak I hope the director doesn't mess it up but I know it's very difficult to condense a light novel into 14 24min animation). Well, it's still the first episode tho, shouldn't conclude it too early. I hope to see more development on Violet but I won't judge it until the last episode out but I guess it is still one of the best anime in terms of graphics ( Different people have different opinion on animation style but in terms of difficulty of making it, I will say the quality par or even better than UBW)

Btw, I am sure this show is not everyone and kind of slice of life. That's KyoAni for you indeed.

I don't know if it can live up to its hype, but it was a certainly a great premiere. I'm not invested to Violet's character yet, but it will be interesting to see how her character will grow. Art and animation are superb. Many detailed shots and painting-like background art. The art direction might not be everyone cup of tea, yes I understand some people's complaints about the editing, but it is expected knowing the director's preferences. But honestly, it looks fine because it doesn't really ruin the watching experience imo.
It will be quite a challenging task for the staffs to maintain this kind of technical quality and translating the premise itself imo will be quite challenging as well, since it is emotion-heavy. But so far the positive outweigh the negative and the first episode is successful in eliciting some kind of emotions inside myself. Cautiously optimistic about this show and yes this show is not for everyone.

The problem with modern KyoAni works, especially this one, is that they completely overdo the digital effects and smother every frame in bloom, blurring, chromatic aberration, etc. It just starts to become overwhelming and suffocates the genuinely good animation underneath with a bunch of post-processing effects and bright lights for no reason. Honestly I find it ugly.

Maybe, but it is probably because of the director's art style preferences (Taichi Ishidate). Just look at Kyoukai no Kanata which is also directed by him.

In usual KyoAni fashion, this is obviously going to be one of, if not, the most visually spectacular shows this season in terms of art and animation. Whether or not the story has the substance to positively hold the viewers' attention throughout it's run is what will really matter in the end. Or maybe it won't bc it's KyoAni and it's pretty to look at.

Like a few have mentioned, I'm not sold on violet's character thus far, but that can definitely change. Not my favorite first episode of the season, but a solid one nonetheless!

hmm well said well said if i may ask what are people expecting this anime to be?, the ones where the anime isn't directed for everyone. Also hopefully violets characters gets more likeable for people i agree with a few points people were stating and some are passed off due to traumatic experiences in war which people go through. But yea overall it was pretty solid hopefully we get writing improvements though so kyo can shine

Definitely a strong start. I can understand that some people may find this intro episode a bit slow, but I'm glad it didn't really feel rushed. As expected, gorgeous art in every way. Especially the backgrounds. Unlike 90% of other anime, this world truly feels alive thanks to all the characters moving in the background and such. They did a great job establishing Violet's mindset on everything and why she wants to become an Auto Memories (Memoir?) Doll. Again, visually stunning, as expected for KyoAni. If the future stories in the show are even half as good as Hibike! Euphonium I will be very happy.

Animation is really well done but the story in ep1 isn't very interesting for me. The hype was definitely too big. I feel like they removed a lot from the novel and the tv series is worse because of that. I will continue to watch next episodes (3 ep rule).

Holy crap, I almost teared up at that last scene. The raw emotion depicted through Kyoto Animation is incredible. The voice acting also hits hard, like damn.

Everything about this show falls into pretty much what I expected from Kyoto Animation's most hyped work in years. Hell, even I was overhyping it like crazy before its release.

What I'm afraid of is that too often than not, hype destroys a show as people end up setting their expectations to a unreasonably high standard just from a few clips they saw from PVs or trailers beforehand.

I am proceeding with this series with cautious optimism that it will blow me away ;)

Also, for all of you that watched this in 720p from Asenshi, I recommend you to rewatch it later in 1080p when they re-release it to take in the full beauty and detail of the animation. It is truly a sight to behold

Finally, the wait is over. Watched the first episode of 'Violet Evergarden'. Art, animation, music and sound effects has the typical Kyoto Animation top quality. Story just started, it is too early to evaluate it. Violet herself comes so dehumanized she would not pass the Turing test. It will be interesting to watch how Violet will develop herself to recover the humanity she was denied to have.

On a healthy expectation over the anime.

In my personal and irrelevant opinion, this first episode was neither good nor bad. Nonetheless, as I'd hoped wouldn't be the case after seeing the preview, Violet Evergarden tries too hard to be beautiful, and it's careful to the point of contrivance. A pen can't just fall; it must fall beautifully. When the wind blows, things must be beautifully whisked away to the sound of mournful violin strings. Everything is a dramatic event accentuated by gaudy, low-contrast visuals. Beyond the animation—by "animation" I mean the key and in-between work, which is undoubtedly good—little else feels inspired.

This show clearly isn't for me. Rather than whine every week about things I don't like, I'm just going to drop it. If you enjoyed it, I hope you continue to do so.
