| and Idk maybe you like shooting but none of those were ever good at it and if you want to engange with themes it's a shootface core wrapped with scavenging and choices and stuff actually making for narrative progression which just comment on stuff at best it makes for plausible places at worst long complicated menus to walk through for the next cute bit reasons why some bio devs dropped shooting for said direct scavenging in Gone Home and then dropped scavenging for ai recordings in Tacoma wouldn't play any of these games from the 90s till now tbh |

| with plasmid stuff it gets ranty generally every weapon role you'll ever get, aka a single specific thing each gun is good at, is in online arena games of old. Browse quakelive's weapon list. They are more abstract than most shooters, better designed because of it, and you can find this fundamental fps stuff in every shooter ever unlike magic plasmid, though not perfect, since doom/quake etc. You can attach a jetpack to any doomguy and experiment on the fly. Even in the case we were strictly speaking of narrative driven shooters he wouldn't jump out of character because he's that abstract and blank and just qualifies as space marine or doomguy. In bioshock 2 things are more fleshed out, you are a big daddy, you can't do more than what big daddy does according to your story without working on reasons for every single thing, he's not abstract enough to have a jetpack but he has to spit fire from his hand etc for people desires otherwise he gets out of character. Basically these plasmids don't fit gun roles, which are already there, but have to answer map situations just like guns so they work on strengths and drawbacks and sometimes bad ideas. Environmental traps are the cutest because they answer map situations like guns do, but it's bio stuff, you are not going to use it in other shooters because any explosive projectile like rockets and granades actually do the same thing and are consistent in every situation in whatever map. Think of space or water maps, you can't put pools to thunder there. Arena guns are better in whatever situation as far as killing goes, while magic in general is a cute alternative to play a character. And like bullet time they can be "second chance" mechanics sure. |

| I am not saying they don't have a specific role, but many of them can be used not as environmental traps or weapon replacements. There are several that are there to distract enemies from shooting you. Which nobody really uses, but it's nice to have them there for an alternative or to run away on harder difficulties. It's not just character, it also has to do with worldbuilding plasmids where there in Bioshock 1, a game that plays before 2. Why would they not be longer in the game? Plasmids are used more as a gimmick in game, some for certain situations, shooting, running away, lying traps. They overdone it a bit and 2/3 of it it's not getting used, but I'd take that over the 3 plasmids we got in Infinite. I don't get how you can program a game that runs on the same engine, and less variety when it comes to gunplay. You even could recycle ideas from previous entries. Well, not everyone can put old shool areana shooter guns in their games. 1. They did get trashed for copying most of their weapons from other games (doesn't happen with games that are based on real guns or act like real guns). And 2. | you were saying they work with shooting and stuff like most territorial control stuff like chess, if the aim is to design a tool for something like a shooter you should ask yourself if a) it kills and b) if it adds depth without pointless complexity. chess and shooters mostly get new modes, while other shooter additions are actually pointless trends. some ideas will be half bad but still fit*, distracting enemies is a defence but also a support to your mate in case co op is a thing, just like support classes are, in online games, regardless of their job in damaging and healing (heal this, build a turret there, etc). It's just that, for the sake of the shooting stuff discussion, not everything will answer a situation supported by the map so for example instead of distraction a cuter idea would be a clone, because magic, because it kills and does everything you do already and it's a novel approach to stealth too. It's something you could actually import in most games, not like disho, but rather like the gun robot from battlefield games which you control in first person *most bioshock 2 things are probably half cute but I haven't checked a wiki/can't remember it generally is about characters for the desires of people, everyone in overwatch is a character rather than a class who does what in every other game would be a bad idea, it's kind of a deviant and it's "good" but not as good as plain arenas nor it does have cool lessons beyond designing around the idea of comfort which includes the transmedia storytelling stuff too, it doesn't even have a good story to tell |
