I just love Asuka she's so spirited and cute and funny. This was a good episode and naturally I expected the band to play badly. But I gotta say I'm surprised by the teacher, not because he's a little harsh but because he doesn't do anything and seems to want the students to just figure it out. I know this is a club as opposed to a school course but seems odd to let the students try and learn a technical skill like playing music without instruction. My own teacher in high school was a little hard on us but he actually taught and pushed us to do well.

Also is having a Contra Base common in concert bands? It certainly wasn't in mine. In Jazz Bands and Wind Symphonies it would make sense but basic Concert Bands? I like this show though it takes me back to my brass playing days. Also kind of hoped in the last episode Kumiko would have played the Trombone but hey it is called Sound! Euphonium after all :D

I'd like to know a little more of Kumiko home life. What happened between her and her sister. It looked at one time they were close then something happened to make Kumiko become distant from her. Going to college, imo, is not enough of a reason.
She seems so lackluster when she get's home. There's something there I can't place my finger upon.

Damn it, I wish someone would scan the mangas. I now want to read them to get more background information.
What if the Hokey Pokey is what it is all about?

Am I the only one that thinks the teacher is kind of an ass? He goes into the class room, has them play for him and tells them they are shit WITHOUT giving them any sort of instructions on WHY they suck or HOW they can improve. No, he just smiles while insulting them…. I think that is what really annoys me, the fucking ass is just smiling as if he’s just too good for that club. Again, it would help if you... you know, tech them? Give them CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

*sigh* I never thought that just ONE character could ruin an entire anime for me, but I just can’t stand this asshole. I can't even get past the beginning of ep 4 because of the teacher continuing to be an ass by forcing everyone to run. Well, it's mostly the "do it in 90 second or you'll have to do another lap" that pissed me off. If the point is to build endurance and pace your breathing, that might help IF you pace yourself! Pushing yourself to go beyond what your body is telling you is your current limit will only get you injured. Just saying.....

No...you are definetly not alone ;-) He is an ass, at least so far.

I officially hate this show (despite liking it) now for messing with my feelings. I mean...Shinsekai yori is one of my favorite anime ever and it took me forever to get rid of the void i found myself in when it ended. And what does Kousaka-san do? She plays, out of all pieces in the whole world, From the new World...WHY???!! did you have to remind me.

He definitely comes across with an attitude that he is too good for this job or something. I can understand his (unseen?) frustration at the ensemble lacking both skill and motivation, but the way he handles it is really annoying.

omg so much band drama I LOVE IT

the method the teacher is doing it at is very risky as he's dealing with a bunch of high schoolers (?) and they could all potentially fail and whatnot. if i were him, i would give them more guidance. because when i was in 9th grade, most of the grade 9s and 10s would have all quit if the teacher pulled that stupid shit of being independent. come on, a bunch of them are beginners too... not worth losing..

In Earthbound, there's a trumpet player who plays Dvořák's From the New World on a cliff/hillside as well, so I couldn't help but smile at Kousaka doing the "same"; sending their "haunting melody" throughout the town, as the NPC described it.

I'm surprised I even remembered that NPC and what song he played, to be honest.

Sensei is perceptive & straight to the point harsh. A good teacher. But also shows the difference of a band/club, versus band as class in other school systems. Obviously in my former band, it's a class so teachers are paid to teach & must guide weaker sections despite how bad they are. We are graded on performance, and also keep logs of practice hours, so even if some aren't musically motivated the rest still performed to get the grade.
Ep2 parts about sensei noting previous year's goal, and how "nationals" is just a slogan as prez said, made a lot more sense once we learn of the 2nd year enthusiast vs slacker rift.

Well unless there's a different meaning I'm not aware of I'm pretty sure wind instrument is just any instrument that is played with a mouth piece and air as opposed to a String Instrument or Percussion.

Great thread.

Unfortunately, I don't think anime has too many club advisers so we don't have a point of reference how they function in Japan. I mean, K-ON has the most (in)famous anime class adviser, and she's for comedy, not realism. I have the GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class manga, and the adviser there is also for comedy relief, but she definitely behaves differently as an adviser vs. as a teacher. GA also notes that the art students already take classes, so aren't in the club.

-I'm actually a big fan of how the recap passes so quickly into the OP
-I'm also loving how upbeat the OP is
-These episode titles are pretty good hiragana/katakana practice
-The sound of people playing scales is really relaxing
-These subtitles wrote circular breathing as the exercise Kumiko and Hazuki were doing, but it seemed more like a regular breathing exercise from the advice that they gave to Hazuki.
-Green sapphire's pretty eccentric, but in a good way
-Kumiko's smug face

-Kumiko's disappointment when she went to get the horns was palpable
-Asuka's foreign language voices are so great
-Kinda weird for all this red tape to exist in a high school club setting
-Reina playing that one section of New World Symphony that played in Shinsekai Yori (the Largo), and based KyoAni makes her play the correct fingerings mostly the correct fingerings, aside from the B she plays (second valve) as the camera snaps to her. It should have been a B flat with the first valve being pressed. Other than that, all the other fingerings were actually spot on.

The scene with Reina's solo was actually a pretty powerful one, mostly because of the backstory behind the song but also because KyoAni put the time and effort into making the trumpet fingerings correct except for the B natural she fingered. The instruments were cleverly concealed by the sheet music during the disastrous ensemble rehearsal, which makes Reina's trumpet playing the only scene within that had that much detail put into it. Reina also said no words at all during the scene but it's pretty obvious why she screamed at the end, which made it all the more impactful.

Usually KyoAni chooses to animate the weirdest, most unimportant things, but it the scene at the end of the episode was made even more significant by how detailed the animation was.

The conductor is ruthless, his appearance is very deceptive. And it seems like Aoi was right, a lot of the band members don't care, even though they voted to aim for regionals nationals. Must resist Community reference

If the lack of solid motivation wasn't enough, there was even some hardcore drama in the band last year. Despite this, Kumiko is getting a little more excited about the band, which is fun to watch.

Ugh is this show supposed to be this stressful? The hecking students who aren't trying hard and being difficult should be asked to leave. And I can imagine being pissed at the teacher if I were in that situation. But yeah, the whole situation only frustrates those who truly want to play in a hecking band and who want to get better.
God. And then we find out that the year before the "gung-ho" students quit because of a disagreement and the shitty students stayed? That seems kind of dumb. Why would the shitty students even bother to stay at that point? Right?
Guess we'll find out more later on! Loving that it's frustrating me as much as it's frustrating the characters!

Okay it seems things are starting to get good from here.

Honestly if I was in that band, I’d be pretty darn upset with half of those kids. Like if you aren’t even gonna attempt to better yourself, then why even be there?

That teacher rekt em in the kindest way. I really like him. He’s really cute. I wanna hear him play an instrument lol but he’s right, these kids aren’t ever gonna make it to nationals if they don’t get it together.

I loved listening to Reina play. And I felt really sorry for her too. It’s like the same thing is happening to her all over again. Maybe everyone will get their crap together soon.

That teacher isn't qualified to teach band, and the kids that quit because of how crap he was at his job should have informed his employers of it so that he wouldn't still be there to destroy another crop of promising new band members. Though, honestly, I'm surprised their parents didn't do the complaining for them. Good parents don't like to see their kids' dreams being crushed by crap teachers who don't know or don't care about how to do their job properly.

I'm assuming it's cultural. The blame is directed not at the authority(in this case the teacher for seemingly not teaching) but at themselves regardless of how fair or unfair it is. Japan is definitely a conservative society in that sense. The gung-ho kids who quit abide by those principles the most, leaving the lazy ones to sit around.

Episode that demonstrates the complexity of the narrative, with a very interesting plot and serious arguments behind it. During the exposure of the episode, the main story is intertwined with the lives of the characters and their daily life becoming a very intriguing linkage with an unexpected result so much so that it is not clear where you go, resulting for the viewer to be a journey on sight this episode, as happened for the previous ones. Excellent drawings and animations for quality, ditto the backgrounds.

I don't like the president ,she is just too much hesitant ,confused and don't know how to pull along her members .They should make the VP as new president.
I like the part, they were eating,it's like they were in the wrong way.
The teacher is also a stubborn kid,I know some students betrayed him in the past, but being sagacious won't do any better.
I'm starting to like Kumiko, she is like the full embodiment of what the series has told so far .
Looking forward to how they proceed ahead and can checkmate the teacher.

Even though the majority of the blame could be put on the lazy second years, I think part of it could also be put on their advisor. Taki is pretty strict for someone who gives the bare minimum of instructions. Don't know how this irl should be but I think it's pretty bad considering there are a lot of new members taught by their upperclassmen who probably make some mistakes themselves in which case advisor who would check on them occasionally instead of 'come find me when you're ready' would be really helpful.

Don’t treat them like property, that had me blowing air out my nose

Advisor really isn’t taking no BS here, despite the calm and collected exterior he’s giving off the same vibes as the guy from Whiplash

Got some feels when she played the trumpet out in the open, and then especially when she let it all out. Not the most unique of a character, but definitely still I want to know more about. Also funny enough, shinsekai yori is next on my watch list

On a side note here I’ve just realized that I kind of really dislike narration in anime. It’s usually basically exposition, which I prefer not to have in movies. Show us, don’t tell us, you have some beautiful animation to work with here. Yeah it’s a huge nitpick, this is just anime, but I feel it could be so much better without us being told the thoughts of our mc all the time. Show it to us on their facial expressions. Maybe some things you have to explain through it, but otherwise it would be nice to keep it limited. Anyway, not that big of a deal, but that’s just my two cents

Okayyy why didn't these people want to join in the first place when they couldn't put in a little bit of hard work for this? Are they doing just for the kicks momentarily?

"From the New World" is fitting and Reina's shout after was cathartic.

The advisor was rather cold to them this time. But he was right about the fact they sound terrible sectionally. And as Aoi had said the students weren't taking it seriously. Plus, most of the 2nd years in the band were lazy which further worsened then performance.
