I don't think so. :/ Especially given my husband who is not an anime fan really and watched Rose of Versailles with me.

There is no absolute magic number to determine if you're a real anime fan. To be a real anime, you would have to not only watch the mainstream anime but watch the non-mainstream anime as well. Watch one YOU think is good, not only the one that everyone else praises. Remember, we all have our OWN opinion. That's what I think a real anime fan should be.

Watching anime series that are different from each other and not all from the same genre makes you appreciate anime as a media form, where there can be all genres. Just like with movies, tv series, books etc. You can have your biases and preferences, but seeing a variety of shows opens you up for genres you might have not considered before.
I would say that usually when you have around 100 completed anime series other anime fans take you seriously. I personally don't care that much, as time as you're passionate about it. Though watching only shounen and not giving a chance to other anime series doesn't make a good impression.

1000? I've been watching anime for 5 years and considered myself a real fan at about 50.
Still, I find the days watched score more impressive than the number of anime.

naruto : 220eps
naruto shippuden : 500eps
total eps : 720

assuming each episode is 20 min
then 720 * 20 = 14400min = 240hrs = 10days

look at how amount of days it takes to finish it. that was a huge effort i think

Variety over number. It matters not to have +500 in your list if all you have seen is a hundred hentai, 50 ecchi, 100 harem, 30 overhyped animes and 100 light novel adaptations.

You better explore all the genres, from the '70 to the present days. This way, you get an excellent mental representation of how the industry has evolved as a whole.

My, my. More of this "enjoyment above everything else" bullshit...
This is the kind of mindset which makes one stay on his comfort zone, instead of trying to explore new shores. Also the kind of mindset which encourage directors to play it strictly safe to not make fanboys angry. The kind of mindset with which the industry is running in circle nowadays.

Since there are only exactly 500 spots for real anime fans you have to wait until one of us quits the medium to apply. If you do 500+ completed are recommended, but realistically anything under 1500 is a no-go.
I probably regret this post by now.

Being a fan of 1 series as a whole doesn't make you a fan of anime, just Naruto itself.

Being a real fan of anime requires you to watch multiple series of different genres with mainstreamed and non-mainstreamed.

Episodes can only be taken into consideration if it's like several series.

Being a fan of one series doesn't mean you're a real fan of anime imo as the one series doesn't represent anime as a whole. I think it should at least 10 to 20 as it represents it more than just 1.

of course enjoyment is the most important factor when it comes to entertainment, anime is just that, its entertainment, its Japanese cartoons, not a life lesson

and as an example, what the fuck does it matter to you how acclaimed an anime is if you think its boring af?

why are you wasting your time watching shows you think are shit? if you're not enjoying the show it shouldn't matter whether or not you tried something new, don't like it, don't watch

and even when they don't play it safe, people still bitch and whine constantly, so that doesn't necessarily matter

no one is forcing anyone to watch anything, all you guys do who continue to watch anime you don't like is help give the shows free publicity and views

It's less about numbers and more about the variety of of what you are watching I think.

100 seems like a reasonable benchmark to graduate from casual to experienced though.

Enjoyment is the most important thing. That's why reality TV shows are so ubiquitous on the television. They provide what is the essential, that's for sure.

EcchiLordMamster said:

It matters not. I even tend to judge more severely the mainstream titles overhyped by everyone. To have higher standards improves your rational views on things. How can you be receptive to more complex stuff if you stay in your bubble, always enjoying the same ass shots and boob shots thrown at you, as a poor excuse of a scenario full of beaten to death tropes unfolds?

EcchiLordMamster said:

Oh, the whole "if you don't like it, why are you watching it?". The same kind of thesis I read from the hive mind. Well, it makes sense if the anime at hand is an obscurity. Why would I watch a piece of shyt that none cares about?

On the other hand it changes completely when it's a popular entry and you know why? It's exactly because it's all the rage amongst the community. If I don't watch it, how can I discuss about it and feel entitled to tell it's shit? If I don't do it, the likes of you reeking with bad faith reply "pfft, you haven't even watched it entirely anyway". Also, to perform an autopsy on an anime I detest by identifying all its flaws allows to better understand myself as a spectator. Breaking it down is sometimes even more enjoyable than watching the anime itself.

There's no real number. You just have to enjoy anime to be considered an anime fan. My MAL list only has 97 entires (counting currently watching, dropped, on hold, and plan to watch. There are also a few anime that I saw before getting MAL and forgot about) yet I would still consider myself a hardcore anime fan. As long as you enjoy anime and actually want to be an anime fan, then you are one

If you think of yourself as a fan of anime, then you're an anime fan. It doesn't depend on how many series you've watched, it may be the case for how other people judge it to be, but in general terms it doesn't. I consider myself a fan of anime and manga, and more, yet I haven't completed more than 100 series.

@sorcery

great, YOU like to be harsher on anime and analyze it, YOU like to figure out what it is exactly that makes an anime good or bad for you, YOU like to talk about how much you think an anime was shit and why

well good for you....

cause i don't.... i don't care about being critical, sorry

i've watched anime from like every genre, and i've been doing it for far far longer than most people on here, i think im justified now in what i choose to watch. i agree 100% that people should try all types of anime, but people are free to choose w/e. this again is entertainment, if people only want to watch they know they find entertaining, there shouldn't be an issue, its just a cartoon

and i didn't say creators shouldn't think outside the box, ofc i think they should, (as long as you can still tell its an anime) im just saying that people are still going to whine and say the anime is shit regardless

Just relax, This isn't a ritual. Anime is like any other medium, Its purpose is to tell stories. Mostly it's a 20 minutes long episodes kinda of story telling. So if you enjoy that aspect and delve further and learn about the basics of anime, Like why 12 episodes, Anime specific Terminology, Your personal taste in the genres and how you are liking both popular and non-popular shows, etc etc. It's just like any other medium as i said, Once you get immersed and find that you genuinely enjoy it, You'd be a fan. It's not a ritual, It's not a rite of passage where you have to kill a Thresher Maw. xD Just take it easy and enjoy it.

If magical = special, then I might not concur since the "golden ratio" is still out there... :p First statement by Deknijff is very much agreeable though. By the sheer power of (human) language to generate expressivism, I personally believe it helped me to categorize or gauge myself into being an anime fan and the likes. At this very moment, I am still aware that I "consciously" label myself as an anime "viewer" or "enthusiast" even though I already hit that aforementioned 100th mark years ago (my list is severely outdated because of laziness). More or less, whether criticisms that is not from myself suggest the opposite, it is my approach on anime as a medium that keeps me fixated as what I think I currently am. You will learn it yourself as time passes by, whatever others may imply otherwise, the realization process is entirely up to you. Ofc, better understanding of the language could be sought first to avoid lexical confusion.

the more anime you watch the less likely it is you like every one of them. the more you watch the more likely it is that you dislike some of them. if you watch over 200 anime you souldnt rate all of them over 8 because it is unlikely you like them all/they are all good. if your really like all of them it makes you a weirdo who basically likes everything despite its flaws. if you just give everything high rates despite knowing its not really good you should think about you rating system

#imdrunk

also giving an anime the rating 6, 5 or even 4 is not an insult to the anime.

1000? Jesus dude...

A fan is someone who enjoys something, if you're a fan of a good variety of shows, you can be considered a fan of the whole medium. Just watch a little of everything so you can get a good idea of the various shows that the medium has to offer.

I feel like i've watched more than your average person and i'm only sitting at a little over 300 TV series counting the ones i haven't finished yet.
