I advise everyone to continue watching. This show is beautiful, almost a masterpiece.
It's not very easy for Ohana to fit in this new enviroment of course, but I assure you that her situation will get better.

Loved this first episode, had quite a nice start with the story and the art is quite impressive as well! Quite like the general concept of this Anime so lets see what it all has to offer! From this first episode I would give this a 9/10!

Well, the artstyle is amazing.
Love Ohana's hairstyle.
As far as her personality goes, it can go eitherway.
The dialogue is very witty.

Only 6 minutes in, but I couldn't contain myself. That is one shitty mother. Makes me sad because parents like this actually exist.

edit: Damn. Good episode. Protagonist fucked up twice (butting into others' business even as an attempt to do something nice is not something you do on your first day in a new enviroment), but to be fair she's not at all accustomed to this way of life, and she's handling it like a champ all things considered. I've been in her position and at the age of 16 I'm fairly positive I would have cried and bitched about how unfair life is instead of persevering. Grandmother & Minko were pretty harsh, but not unjustified.

Also, this may be the first time I've seen an ass-grope in anime, they're not nearly as common as boob-gropes.

Good first episode, slice of life for sure, but with a good dramatic story behind it to power it up.

Nice character designs too. It's refreshing to see a grandmother figure in japanese animation who is not a dwarf, but rather a normal sized person with a face that reflects the kind of beauty she might have been in the past.

Beautiful character designs and animation... too bad I didn't like a single one of the characters, and the plot seems very tired. >_< I'm not sure I want to even give it another chance. Of course, I had a hard day. I might just be in a mood.

Oh wow 17 pages of comments :o Wasn't expecting that. Hmm, a fairly interesting episode, but it's the first episode, so I can't say much. I think there's only been a few series where I loved it from the very beginning, so this is to be expected that I'm not totally sold yet. PA Works's art is beautiful of course, the character designs are cute though. Also, Kou-chan was funny with his confession, I love how he ran away right after telling Ohana to just go.

When the character I liked the most is THAT trash of a mother, something is seriously fucked up. There is nothing to like at all about any of the characters. We have Miss Retard, Miss TsunTsun, Miss Mute, Mister Slouch, Chef Ass and of course Madam Faceslap. Few characters have ever made me hate them more than that grandmother in such little time, not to mention how much I loathe violent tsunderes, dislike unempathic/uncaring characters and don't care the least for the female Naruto clone that make up the rest of the cast.

With no character to care for and with no enjoyment to be had from the situation or any sort of hint of anything interesting apart from good animation I can't see myself continuing this.

Not quite what I was expecting but the atmosphere is more melancholic and relaxing than I imagined. Ohana is a very interesting one so far and I like her quirky view on things. Laughed so hard when she was like "another old lady that throws me candy" and down comes a bucket. Loving the art, P.A. Works is nothing short of magnificent in that respect.

Holy crap, there are so many things I love about this show so far. I regret not writing them down as I was watching.

- With just bits of Ohana's dialogue I already knew that I'm gonna at least really like her. She's quite a character.
- The poetic lines in this episode remind me of Shigatsu and I was in love that part of it (then again, I was in love with all of it 😅). I really hope they continue.
- I had to rewind multiple times because I was too busy appreciating the backgrounds and scenery. I shouldn't have expected anything less than amazing in this regard with PA Works behind it.
- The camera angles that they used when Ohana was getting slapped and right after it of her feet backing up was brilliant.
- I also love the attention to detail towards the end with the worn out walls and the scratches on the wood floor. After noticing that, and with how much the show impressed me so far, I couldn't help but say "Wow."
- The insert song was great and so was the OP. I'll be listening to those a lot, and I'm really looking forward to listening to the ED in the next episode!
- I'm super excited to see where the story goes from here as the first episode set up so that there is so much room for character and relationship development as well as character and relationship backstories that we've yet to explore.

Ohana is annoying as fuck.
What kind of a person goes to a new place and starts picking up random weeds from other people's property without asking anyone! Then proceeds to lecture strangers about how they should behave with each other. Then goes on to hang a futon of someone she barely knows without permission. I don't care what their intentions are, if a random stranger touches my stuff without permission I'll get really mad.

Well that sure is a harsh family. A somewhat neglectful mother, a monster granny and weird peers. Cant help but feel bad for Ohana. Speaking of Ohana, her name reminds of Lilo and stitch "Ohana means family" lol. I guess that's where her name came from or maybe it just means flower.

I cant really agree how her granny do things in the inn. You gain respect from the people working for you by inspiring them not intimidating them.

I can't believe I've skipped this Anime a couple of years ago!!! I decided I'll watch just the movie, I thought it was just summary of the series. No wonder I didn't quite get it. This Anime is so sweet and cute and funny. I'm so lucky that it came up again and that I took time off and watched the first episode - I was hooked up immediately.

Woah expecting this to be a happy go lucky SOL show just like most of the SOL that I watched, never expected to be showing the harsh way of living with a disjointed family. As much as everyone wants to hate on the grandmother and I agree with that, it really can't be helped though for the fact that her daughter can't even raise her own child properly, added the fact for all the careless mistakes Ohana did with the inn are facepalm worthy, but to treat her employees like that because of that mistake is pretty much unreasonable though. Other than that, LOL'd at how oblivious Ohana was when that guy groped her ass though. And that "Die" girl was pretty weird, pretty sure that's where her anger contained into huh by saying that crap.
Anyway all I can say is that what a fcking strong 1st episode indeed.

On a second watch, this episode didn't depress me, it downright pissed me off like few first episodes so far. Every single character, save for Ohana, is a jerk or just annoying. If that's what the creators were going for, then good job.

It's almost surreal how well Ohana takes all this crap, and only shows any genuine emotion at the end of the episode. I would have blown up or had a nervous breakdown trying to contain myself a lot sooner.

At least the second watch allowed me to see things from Ohana's perspective a little bit. Her reactions seem a little hard to believe, but I realize she's a teenager and a lot more plucky than I am, so she's able or willing to take more abuse than I would (that sounds so wrong when I write it down but still).

Well then, all aboard the train of suffering! Choo choo!

That's been my reaction after just watching this episode for the first time... To the point that I'm wondering if I should continue watching something so unreasonnable. Also, pretty sure the show will proceed to try to redeem all these characters at some point, which pisses me off even more.

Great opening episode. Ohana made some careless mistakes and I don't think she deserved to be treated that way, however it's not made clear if the grandma and her co-workers are aware of her circumstances. Even then, this looks like a place that prioritises work over feelings, so I hope Ohana can adapt to it.

That was a way more intense start than I expected, let's see... Ohana's friend confessed to her, her mother leaves with his boyfriend and sends Ohana to work in an inn, where the first thing someone said to her was to die, and then she go slapped by her grandma for a mistake she did when she just tried to air the futon, poor girl q_q

This a pretty harsh start and i feel sorry for Ohana.
At first i thought only her mother was irresponsible for sending her of the her grandmother with whom she herself has a bad relationship but after seeing the behavior of the grandmother i have to say that she is irresponsible as well.
In a way it's understandable that she treats her granddaughter of a disowned daughter with some hostility but why others as well.
I can understand that you let them do some work most kids have to do some form of chores at home but slapping them in such a way and blaming them for a others mistake is going to far.
Then there was the way of how the cook treated Minko which i also found pretty outrages, i have worked at many jobs and can tell this if someone treats you in such a way tell them to do it themselves you should not let yourself get treated in such a way.

I think it's supposed to be a contrast between urban and rural life in Japan. A lot of the differences in treatment from what you might expect are likely to demonstrate that contrast. In particular, note Ohana's comments on the city skyline, and then look at the scenery when she's talking outside with that other girl.

Also, I disagree with most of the opinions that I've seen in this thread. I don't like any of the characters, least of all Ohana herself. I don't agree with someone who goes somewhere new and thinks it's acceptable to impose her opinions and fantasies on everyone there. Ohana doesn't seem to think anything through at all, and I actually wanted her to get slapped by her grandmother for being so careless. That said, I think the characters are just flawed enough to have genuinely interesting interactions, and that's why I'm going to keep watching this show. As YGH mentioned, though (and in their words), I hope it doesn't go the way of "over-privileged kid forced to work and eventually wins the hearts of the people around her."

We see a clear example, where the coach thinks that he can give motivation when hitting his student, and I do not think that is the case.
Abuse of authority... and child abuse in case of this anime.

I hope the situation improves for the protagonist :/
The question isn't "What anime do you like?" That is merely a list.
