Ummmmm I don't quite get what this show wants to be . The protagonist is so damn pretentious and annoying. There is too much exposition alongside a pretty bad pacing And the art was ugly. I think i will give it the 3 episode rule.

The premise was decent enough for a cop show and to me it felt a little like a light hearted version of Psycho Pass with our main female lead kinda reminding me of Akane from Psycho Pass in her early stages

Man, I can really tell that people here don't watch old school anime. This show is obviously heavily inspired by Patlabor.

The problem with that theory is that this show is too generic to even be able to make that comparison, this show could be compared to hundreds of different series with even more validity. Almost every army/cop story, and definitely all that intend to have some comedy, has the same "wet behind the ears rookie being sent to join a section with screw ups in it" set-up.

As for it be "inspired" by Patlabor, please. The first episode was too bad to warrant a comparison to anything, particularly one of the best robot animations ever made.

You can be inspired and still make something horrible. I never said it was good, LOL.

Wow, as expected mal's shitaste is agravating.

So far good. Nice premise of light hearted police show mixed with tokusatsu and satire for bureaucracy.
Where do you see Classroom Crisis in this? They are all adults (Kazari is 19, you need 20 to be considered adult in Japan).

Also, stop whining about undeveloped characters after ONE episode.

This was a very average first episode, but I didn't find it boring so I'll stick with it for now.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

This was terrible.

Well maybe it's just this episode but some of the characters where just way to annoying and some of the developments during this episode didn't make sense.
I mean how would 16 year olds be able to obtain what seemed to be military spec weapons and why would the police only have one unit to counter these weapons.
Too bring it into comparison it's like a bunch of teens managed to get their hands on a combat vehicle and they are using it too rampage around the city.

Then there are the characters.
First of there was the black haired guy who was busier with showing of then actually doing something useful.
Then the main girl who was way to uptight and as the tent scene suggested a virgin who yells at seeing a bunch of naked man.
The rest of the crew doesn't seem to care much about what their doing but they seem to be focused on using underhanded tactics.

And honestly this anime seems like very similar to Rail Wars.

This was a horrible 1st episode and I'm dropping this anime. Parts that stuck out to me as particularly bad:

1. Characters didn't have complete character arc in first episode
2. CG didn't look like robots in Warhammer 40k or Starcraft 2 (made by Blizzard Entertainment), they instead went with more 2D look like, what's the point?
3. The story is just so boring, I went in expecting philosophical questions about duality of men but got "fun" tokusatsu cops in mecha suit, WTF?
4. Soundtrack is just incredibly bland, it's not something I wanted to hear, come back when you can license Drake or Kanye West.

Final verdict Police-Academy-ripoff/10

Cast relative to the story is awkward. Midget chief, the girl that doesn't talk, flustered protagonist, etc. I'll give it another episode, though. Can't help but think I'd be better off just rewatching Psycho-Pass or Patlabor instead of following this.

I feel like this show is basically a "What If" scenario from the first episode:

What if Psycho-Pass was turned into a slice of life comedy with mildly serious sequences?

The soundtrack is catchy though but more than likely, this is going to be a three or four-episode rule followed by a drop.

We shall see.
Don't believe the hype.

I'm not really feeling it. The pacing is really fast and way too action-packed for my taste. I don't like the main brown haired girl who keeps on spewing out random Engrish. She seems annoying.

On the other hand, Zakki, Sakupyon and Toriumi sound fucking incredible here. Huge respect! Oh and Hanae as well.

The art is really nice, as well as colours. I enjoy the OST, that was a few jazz pieces mixed in. The OP is A++++.

I'll watch more next week.

It's depressing to see some people are already making huge generalizations about the entire series based on a single episode.

Very premature to even discuss the pacing, for instance, since it will probably be increasingly reduced within the first few episodes.

The same thing goes for the characters. We've barely seen two to five minutes of each, on average.

1. It's not necessary (or even common) to have a complete character arc in the first episode.
2. Well, I think you're just joking now.
3. Yup, you're definitely being silly here. It's not a serious show at all.
4. I think your taste in music is poor.

Im surprised so many people are saying this is "boring." Overall, the presentation gave me a good first impression. I really liked the HUDs and UI stuff they showed.

Although, it was strange how some things were very modern, and other things weren't. Applying the WillWear "inner unit" suit was very futuristic, as it essentially materialized onto their bodies; but then the outer armor was applied mechanically lol. And the "suspect" girl was bound with ropes in a very old fashion instead of using some kinda futuristic cuffs. And the biplane.

I also like the characters. All the Unit 8 members are all chill and do their own thing and always interrupt and ignore the new girl. And the new girl takes things too seriously and thinks she knows stuff.

All of these laws, regulations, and other absurd bureaucratic hoops the police have to jump through to do their job; it seems like this is going to play into the story a lot hopefully. Although, it was funny how their mission plan was denied because of an ongoing anime production.

I don't think people are whining about the lack of development, rather that the development was retrograded, the characters became more unlikable by the end of the episode, and again not in a good way. As an example, from the start the MC was shown to be naive and arrogant, by the end of the episode she was also shown to be stupid, incompetent (she fell for the boy's feints at least 4 times in this episode), petty, and childish.

Which is a pity by her character design was nice and the idea of her investigating the unit could have been interesting. But really, the best thing they can do with her character now is have her learn that she was sent there because the brass considers her even more sloppy and haphazard as she thinks the rest of the troop are and that she was actually sent there to learn something. At least then people could enjoy watching her have her delusions fixed and that could lead to some development on her part. But while that route is possible, it really would be the least interesting route they could have taken with an MC.

As for the satire, I don't think it was meant to be that. The proportional use of force is actually what the police are trained to do. Though I do agree that was one of the nicer bits about this episode.

I hate how many uselesss words and meaning less phrases are used in this director's animes. "Launching, input, output full, authorization" etc might sound professional and all, but its reall meaningless gibberish, and it doesnt add to the story. Not to mention the characters feel so flat.

I think that's an overly harsh statement as a description of her, but again...she was probably made that way in order to change, one way or another. Even the other characters found her annoying to an extent. It's natural to have a negative view of her at first. Otherwise, the story wouldn't have presented her as so misguided.

The episode simply showed that her initial assumptions and aspirations about how to go into this new job within the unit were misplaced. She doesn't necessarily need to remain naive and arrogant for the rest of the show. Her attitude could start to change, sooner or later, as she gets to know more about the rest of the team and their professional/personal lives.

That said...I don't think it's even clear that she will be the one and only main character, despite being the audience's point of view/entry into this particular episode. It'll probably be more of an ensemble cast with specific individuals getting more of a focus at different moments.

Which is why it's even more of a pity to outright dismiss the premise. Have you never seen a show with a bad first episode that later improved? Or shows with a good first episode that got worse? Anything can happen. The state of affairs shown in this episode will not be permanent.

Professional lingo shows up in almost every anime involving police or military, let alone their future versions based on non-existent technology.

But "launching" isn't that rare of a word. It was very clear that they were launching the power armor. Authorization? I think that's a fairly common term too. "Input" and "ouput" are terms that literally explain themselves.

I mean, Planetes was about astronauts in space and a far more realistic show, yet it also had a lot of unusual or irregular terms that professionals in the field would use far more often than regular people. It's not the director's fault, unless you wanted him to pretend that nobody talks like that when they really do.

Agree on the lingo, it helps to establish the tone and feel of a series, the "authorization" I thought was the best thing about this episode. It helped to establish the restraints on the police in this future world and showed that some thought had gone into how the police would respond to devices not inherently weapons, but could be abused as such. This conflict could have some interest (as shown in Patlabor when they had an entire episode about insuring the police).

However lingo should match the demeanor of the characters. Planetes was serious science fiction, thus it was essential for the characters to use lingo. This show, not so much. If this is supposed to be a comedy then lingo is inconsequential (though this episode was so painfully unfunny I doubt it is supposed to be a comedy), but so far it also fails as drama or even action.

I should write more, but I am rushed for time. I will leave by saying: maybe this show will improve next episode, the director alone warrants the benefit of the doubt, however, we only have the first episode to critique today, and based solely on this episode, anyone saying "this show sucks" has a legitimate point. That said, I want all shows to be worth watching, so I hope the next episode will redeem the first, but that remains to be determined, all we can judge is the first week, and the first week was really bad.

Why the hell people are comparing this to Psycho Pass. It's a completely different show.

Oh, so it starts with a rookie being assigned to a Police division. And? That's pretty much the start of a big chunk of police stories throught the world, not just in anime.

As mentioned before, this show has more similarities with Patlabor, given that the suits the criminals used were developed for civilian use and with Cybercop.

Also, please don't spout power rangers. Go google Super Sentai. AND Super Sentai isn't a genre as mentioned before. It's a franchise. This show is tokusatsu inspired, but has no inspiration on Super Sentai.

It's inspired more in Cybercops and in some Metal Heroes.

As for the show itself, the characters are pretty generic for my taste, but I came for the action and the setting and that was ok. Will see it. I just hope they take more inspiration from Patlabor and do a great show.

But all teh fujoshi baiting and fan service kinda make me a bit concerned. Though Tiger and Bunny had tons of fujoshi baiting as well and it was good.

I can already tell this show is going to piss me the hell off with zero deaths. "We're minors!" ...that are guilty of freaking armed robbery among a sleuth of other crimes endangering the public--and deserve to be put down with lethal force immediately with no rights to an attorney whatsoever the moment they stole those suits. And all that goddamn protocol bureaucracy they have to go through...their rights should have been forfeited the moment they essentially became domestic terrorists. I hate shows like these that have such serious elements, but decide to nerf them by making it kid-friendly. As if blasting people with enough destructive force to destroy a building has no repercussions, only ends up with them with a burnt-looking anime face. Had the same problems as Rail Wars...wars with no deaths, let alone a single bullet wound.

The only redeeming thing about this show so far is production quality...but it all falls to shit with the hole-ridden plot.
