Came for Reina, got a split exposition and physics.

I guess this is what we get with Chuunibyo + Fanservice + Kyoukai no Kanata.
I mean, we already have not-Nibutani touching herself to do magic.
Not-Oreki is also in there somewhere, being 50% bystander, 35% accidental perv, and 15% narrator of exposition.
We even have a Reina.

Great start or not, I'll probably still watch for reasons like Izumi, KyoAni, and Izumi.
Well, there's also the last member that isn't properly introduced yet so I'll probably decide whether to keep watching or not depending on the next few episodes.

(insert a bunch of nonsense about cliche) Anyway, it's hard to run a show on fanservice alone so it will probably be a drop soon. Who would have thought years back that KyoAni will become an epitome of almost everything that is wrong with anime industry now.

This is an introduction, are people still expecting full novels worth of content in one episode? What even.....

I heard a lot about, "fan service everywhere", which I'm not a fan of at all, but this was nothing. I guess some people just want agender characters with no defining attributes to their design. Yea, that will make for really diverse and compelling characters. She has big boobs, so what. When fan service starts to take precedence over the narrative, then it's a problem. Was it needed for the cliche character introduction for Izumi, no, but it tried to play off the trope and make a joke, it's still breaking the ice with it's viewers. Would you have preferred her to breakdown in tears and tell her sad story as to why she hasn't and won't join the phantom hunting club? Or maybe you were just expecting her intro to be walked in on while getting dressed so we can get a toe to head pan. All Mai's service was actually still relevant to her situation. Drawing water from her kidney's, wind from her lungs, and of course her natural disadvantage to limbo. Sure it's an unnecessary attention grabber for "otaku" who swoon over boobs that they never get to actually see irl, but it's not intrusive, explicit, and kinda funny.

Inb4 "it's cliche-" everything is. If that's a problem you should just stop watching any sort of entertainment. lol

This was fun, likable characters, beautiful animation, nice BGM/ST, and the world seems to have plenty of possibilities with how the phantoms can pretty much manifest from anything. 6/10 for the premiere.

TL;DR KyoAni finds a way.
Morons like you really get on my nerves. Try reading with comprehension before you quote someone. I didn't complain about fanservice being there but about nothing substantial being there beside it. My main gripe with this show is the main male lead. Wimp that gets bossed around and is butt of jokes. So called stand-in for the viewer. I hate that poorly written cliche with passion. I want to see an actual character, not a blank space that otaku are supposed to insert themselves in to boost sales.

To be honest, I actually enjoyed the fanservice coming from the blonde. It was surprising to see it thrown straight in your face with such force, but it was a nice eye candy if you're a guy. The problem is, there was nothing else there. There was nothing beside bloomers, self groping and shaking boobs to make this episode worth watching that isn't in myriads other shows done in the exact same way.

One more thing, not everything is cliche. There are tropes or typical stories that can be told anew with the core being actually the same and there's nothing wrong with it. They become cliches when it's done poorly and break immersion. When people say something is unoriginal it's not because they expect something groundbreaking and pioneering all the time. It's because it's so bad they actually notice they have seen it already hundreds of times and are tired of it.

You know what I just don't care about this series being generic or harem or whatever it is for as long as they can make it enjoyable thanks to those fanservice, eyegasmic art&animation then it's always a yes for me. Just hoping it may get interesting on the upcoming eps.

Gotta love all the salt MAL throw on KyoAni meanwhile they don't give a fck about it while they just keep on generating $$$$.

For anyone that says this has an interesting plot, I ask you this, since it hasn't been mentioned so far but its an aspect of the story that really pisses me off (I dunno, maybe I was just paying too much attention at BOOBS XD):

How does the plot make any sense? Let me elaborate: The world got infected with a virus that allows people to see phantoms (implying they were already present before). First of all, I dunno why that would be a 'virus' since it makes people better, helps them evolve as a species, etc. but thats besides the point. The real point is that, they say phantoms get in the way and pose problems to people, hence why they need to be dealt with and hunted. But what about before people knew about them or could fight them? Was the world in utter chaos? Cuz I really doubt it, especially seeing as how society seems to have developed perfectly fine.... Which essentially means people are hunting phantoms for the fuck of it, basically cuz theyre a visual eyesore or something i guess? Meaning the plot is actually fucking stupid.

Leaving that aside, the main character is not only generic af, but most of his actions were staring at mai's boobs and not really much else. And sure, reina is cute, but her personality so far is pretty much that of a dumb bimbo.

The worlds problems before the phantoms were perceived to be not caused by the phantoms and thus had non phantom solutions. After the virus they were perceived to be coming from phantoms.
This is covered in the introduction where they show the illusions about how two things could be different and the same.

TBH i only started watching this because Uchida Maaya and Uesaka Sumire are in the anime, but i think ep1 is pretty interesting. It was an ok/decent start to the anime, art was on point (but you'd expect that from KyoAni), so let's see where KyoAni goes with this.

Fair enough I guess, but my point is that those 'problems' were never really that big a deal at all, if you take into account how the world has still shaped up perfectly fine. If some of these problems could be solved in some other way, why not keep doing that? And even if they couldn't be solved at all, this doesn't seem to have affected humans at all, so why suddenly start bothering with all this phantom hunting bs? It feels like a waste of time and effort that could be spent on much more important things, and especially it barely makes me feel that phantoms are a threat at all...

I guess the first fight against that red (fire i think) phantom was ok, but leaving that aside, limbo sriously??? And even in the first fight of the episode, the phantom looked intimidating and all, but it didnt really feel like it was affecting in any way the real world (as in it wasn't destroying buildings, or making cracks/holes in the ground, or earthquakes or anything really, considering how big and heavy it must have been). So my question still stands, why hunt them at all?

I'll give this series another episode or 2 be4 dropping it, basically because its kyoani, but not impressed in the least so far (except art and animation obvs). And from what I've heard from ln readers, the fanservice/boob physics was not in the ln, which makes me think kyoani realized the plot and characters for this show are not strong enough to make it sell, and felt the need to introduce these elements to warrant some sort of success. I guess we'll have to wait and see....

Pretty much this. I don't really see the big deal that this has fanservice. I can only imagine all these people must hate 95% of anime, as a majority of them also have fanservice.

I haven't seen Free, but Hibike. Sure Hibike has yuri-bait, but it was pretty erotic and well-done... and without using weird and lame camera angles and whatever Phantom World uses. It wasn't even that distracting, and characters didn't go out of their personality for making hot things happen that much either. Not saying this was one of the greatest thing that animation has to offer, but it was still on completely another level.

Why people don't understand that we can criticize an anime for something while applauding another one for the exact same thing?
"You can't say fanserv in Phantom World is a bad thing since you enjoyed Gunbuster / Gurren Lagann / Evangelion / Katanagatari / etc". That's pretty much the point, fanservice in this particular show IS bad.

Seems like the anime industry has lost every bit of creativity and they must suck up from LN adaptation.

Kind of somewhat original story and world building but still highschool theme, romance plot and cliché moments, maybe harem on later.

Good animation, generic art style just like Kyoani's previous works, disturbing boob physics as always, that Mai girl has to grab her boob to chant spell because fan service.

Weak main protagonist, female characters are fan service devices and possibly for harem purpose.

Music is nothing special, generic, catchy, plain, perfect for teenager viewers.

Overall 2/10 impression for this 1st episode. And this is only MY OPINION, you can bash it if you like, I don't care.

Emm they can only do slice of life shows anyway, so it's not like they could do anything better than other studios.

Then show me a studio (which is not using 3D CGI, 3DCGI is a cancer btw) which has amazing both - animation and art. KyoAni exceeds EVERY other studios if it comes to visuals. They are just uncomparable. And sorry if I misunderstood you and you don't mean visuals.

Everytime when boy gets under girl's panties.. Girl smashes him to the face or smth.. And it makes me want to question.. Why do you even wear such short skirt? School uniform huh?

Also the scene with those Power poles and that game was.. They tried to make it fun?

QFT. =D

That aside, it was a good episode, giving us a detailed explanation about how phantoms co-exist with the human world and how the students at the academy work together to defeat the phantoms that are causing problems.

I had to laugh at Ichijo knowing that he was in a cliché position while trying to save Reina, but try as he might, fate made sure he got caught by the cliché anyway. XD

The limbo scene was amusing too. Mai proves that you can have a big rack and can still limbo like a pro!

Unless I watch the previews for upcoming future episode, it's a bit tricky to say how the main plot of the show will progress. I'm just hoping that they don't try and rush any future story arcs.

So many comments about how smart or inappropriate the fanservice was, and I'm sitting here like "there was fanservice?" I guess after seeing To Love-Ru and Prison School, the "fanservice" in this show is really inconsequential.

It was a decent episode, just good enough to not be boring. The limbo scene was crazy but clever. I'm going to keep watching this to see where it goes.

I just saw a guy drop the series and give it a 4 rating....WTF. Its the first god damn episode, I don't understand their thought process thinking the first episode represents the whole series.

On another note, this is based off a Novel, not a light novel so its harder to develop compared to a manga adaptation or light novel adaptation. KyoAi has been creating quality novel adaptations like Sound Euphonium so I expect a fantastic adaptation to the source material.

Look, I know there are some occasions where judging a show by its first episode is not a good idea. But this is not the kind of blunder that a show just magically recovers from and then later on becomes really good.

I didn't even like KnK or Tamako Market but even they had okay first episodes that led me to believe they would turn out good. And its not because of my expectations because I thought Free would be completely garbage and I actually enjoyed the first episode of that too.

In fact this is the very first time I've watched through the first episode of a KyoAni show and thought to myself 'Wow, this show is going to suck'.

Just let us look at the ones with the most hype:

Prince of Stride: The first episode was fine but nothing more than that.
Grimgar: Considering the LN, it would be medicore.
Active Raid: Meh...
Boku dake ga Inai Machi: I think that it would be the most well-received out there.
Ajin: The manga is good but CG?! Come on!
Haruchika: Awful.
Dagashikashi: I expect it to be better than Musaigen.
Schwarzmarken: Considering the studio, maybe it can adapt something satisfying.
Norn9: Just VA. The rest isn't worth talking about.
Divine Gate: I played the game but is there anything exciting about the story?
Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu: Steins;Gate's Director may do something promising.
Dimension W: Nothing to write home about!

See? No matter how we look at it, Musaigen no Phantom World will be in Top 5 or top 3 of the season.

Disappointing. Shimono's using his Utapri voice here which is sad. I wanted to hear another side of him. The other girls sound like cancer (voice wise) and I'm not a fan of their designs either. The ecchi parts were pretty bad. Surprised people can get off to this kinda stuff. Not into that magic/action/school stuff either :/ Feels like another action LN harem lmao. Dunno if I should drop or not. We'll see.

On the bright side, Hayashi Yuu/Screen Mode sung the OP and that's enough reason to keep that episode I downloaded.
