Plot and script are again out of the ordinary, impress with their unpredictability; great. Narration not least, excites and let the feelings flow. Some questions intrigue me a lot! (* _ *)

Who is this new girl with dark hair?

Arata goes to see the group in their matches but it's not what he expected as Chihaya forfeited the match due to not feeling well.

Well at least Wataya is back to playing Karuta so that should boost Chihaya's motivation even more.

Arata and his Grandpa's story.
It was nice to see Arata again! And he got a moment to be with Chihaya alone. Quite sad Chihaya forfeited in the game.

Going to be some really lazy writing if she was just used to cockblock him in the first episode never to be seen or brought up again >_>

Taichi never gets a break, Arata always seems to text or arrive at the worst moments xD

hmm, first episode I wasn't entirely happy with.

Reasons:
a) Not showing anything of the matches. I get that the "team" is more of a additional thing in a story centering around Chihaya, Taichi, Arata. But Taichi was still playing, right? I would have enjoyed seeing at least the match she forfeited.

b) Chihaya's focus on Arata is a bit annoying by now, though of course it makes sense that it doesn't suddenly change. I just wish she could think more about her team and less about "showing my skills to Arata".

c) Teardrops falling on zoomed in floors or objects. Do they really need to use this cinematography every single time someone cries?

this is the first episode i wasn't really happy with. it felt so rushed, and arata's flashback in between made it even worse; like you're watching a movie and when the best part arrives, the ads come and never seem to end.

i understand the need to clarify the reason why he stopped playing (even though it was already clear), but the whole sequence just felt forced and disconnected, making me unable to sympathize with him or the group at the tournament.

without the strongest member of the team, they had such a great chance to emphasize the importance and capability of the other members, despite, and perhaps because of their difference on level. instead, all we got to see was a quick dialogue informing of desk-kun's wins. he deserved better, and so did the group (i'm still unsure if they lost or not).

besides, arata's flashback could've easily been placed at another time, perhaps even making his reencounter with chihaya a decent one. after all this time without seeing each other and her incessant adoration for him, it's insane that a rushed reencounter where she barely acknowledges him is what we get.

the pacing of this series is one of the things i was liking the most, but they seem to have lost themselves on this one. hopefully it picks up next time.

Okay, so I actually really liked the Arata flashback. I think it added to his character and made him giving up karuta a lot more believable and understandable from my perspective.

On the other hand, Chihaya getting sick (or whatever tf that was) was absolute nonsense garbage writing. There was no indication that she should get nervous or sick at any point before the game. Unless you could walking past a complete stranger on a staircase which is nonsense. I honestly felt I was missing something with how she got sick as she was placing a card, like that card had something to do with it. But from my understanding the writer simply pulled the sick-out-of-nowhere card out of her ass as an excuse for the team to lose. Lets not forget that Chihaya is a class A player; someone who has been playing for years and has undoubtedly played in many tournament style matches to get to class A. Furthermore, there's been no mention on any prize money, so this is just for a nice trophy and bragging rights. Give me a break.

Rewatching this while reading the manga. Wish they hadn't cut/changed some stuff. Like Kana-chan noticing Chi-chan had super red eyes and Chi-chan replying she hasn't slept and has a headache. Then Arata carrying her like a princess and helping out Miyauchi-sensei. He touching Chi-chan's forehead and mentioning high fever. She crying on his lap, not with her back to him.

Wish Chi-chan would have known that it was Arata who carried her to the room. Would have loved to see her reaction!

Woo hoo! Arata had more screentime. :D

I'm glad Komano succeeded in this tournament by winning twice in a row.

I'm wondering who is that black haired pretty girl that passed by Chihaya on the stairs leading to the temple. :o

@Avish , I'm anime-only, however I'm glad these details you mentioned weren't included in this episode. It was fine just as it was in my opinion.

Well, many comments mention that Chi-chan collapsing was abrupt or plot device or pressure got to her etc, so if they had included the above mentioned little scene with Kana-chan, it would have hinted us beforehand that all is not well with Chi-chan. Then the collapse wouldn't have felt like it came out of nowhere.

About the Arata-Chihaya scene, I'll try to explain. You're a first time viewer, right? But I have already seen both the seasons when they aired. And now because of season 3, I remembered how much I loved it and decided to rewatch while reading the manga. While I love our lovable trio very much, I relate to Arata more. He even looks and dresses like me. He's much more handsome though! Anyway, what I discovered while reading manga is that they cut some interesting/important Arata scenes but added unnecessary ones. One I can recall is Nishida joins straightaway in the manga, but anime used (wasted) full episode for that. Plus the time wasted on recaps made me feel kinda bad for Arata. He already has much less screen-time and still they cut/change his scenes. This scene is just one of many. You'd probably laugh but it made me wonder if the director favors Taichi! Hehe!

Hope that made sense.

Oh, understood. Yeah, the first skipped scene you mentioned would've made that scene with Chihaya collapsing more complex, but when I was watching the episode with it I didn't have thoughts as if her condition came out of nowhere. It just happened, maybe she didn't feel well or was ovewhelmed by pressure. That's how I explained it to myself.

About Arata, indeed... That's sad. I'm already after this "recap episode" you mentioned. Too bad there were no additional scenes with Arata in it, or in other episodes as well. I know it can be seen as something building up atmosphere before his return, but it might go in another direction as well, I mean making Arata not significant, while he is significant a lot to the plot, not only to Chihaya.

Yeah, I also noticed Taichi is treated way better. It's not only because he is actually in the karuta club, but he has a lot of scenes unique for his character, unlike Arata, who is like somewhere in the background, far far away.

The thing is... carrying Chihaya "like a princess" to the room by Arata would be too Josei-ish to me. ;p I'm not a huge fan of that genre and the more universal themes in an anime like that, the better, at least in my oppinion. It fits my taste better.
What I really like about this anime is that it is not a classic Josei, but can be enjoyed by literally everyone.

And yes, it's my first time watching this show and I'm anime-only. :P Soon I will finish watching first season, so I can't wait to start watching the second one.

Not more complex but perhaps easier to understand why she collapsed. I myself didn't have a problem when I first watched, but if you read the thread, several people have issue with the sudden collapse. It might have helped them to some degree.

I understand, but in the manga, it is not treated like anything special. How else is he gonna carry her, right? That's just my way of describing 'like a princess' which may be affecting your view. ;)

Desktomu offering himself as a sacrificial pawn was very admirable. I like his team spirit.

What? Can they ever have a normal match where something doesn't go wrong? It's only the first march at Omi Jingu and shit's already going down. Was it fatigue, overexertion? Either way, Chihaya needs to start taking better care of herself. Putting that aside, I was glad to see Arata's return.

The grandad being ill would be one thing but him forgetting Karuta and not recognizing Arata was definitely depressing. 'No wonder Arata quit the game for a while especially with the guilt of going to the tournament instead of taking care of his grandad.

A pretty decent episode - especially the Arata bits. It's now definitely understandable that Arata is blaming himself for his grandfather's death - although one can also see that grandpa Wataya definitely would have wanted his son to continue playing karuta. I've also heard stories of people suddenly becoming lucid again shortly before their death, but no idea if that's true - however I'm going to assume because this is fiction it inspired by that and that grandpa knew he was going to die and wanted Wataya to go play karuta instead of mope over his death. Seems like Arata got over his grandfather's death this episode and will be a rival somewhere down the line now - something I'll be looking forward to.

As for Chihaya's heatstroke ...definitely something they'll have to adjust going forward. I'm sure people in the Edo period and before had clothing that didn't make them faint in summer. Not really too big of a fan narratively as it doesn't really lead in to any character arc - it shows Chihaya that the others can play without her, but what does that mean for her? That she's disposable? Don't really think that's a direction the series is headed, nor is it one I want to see it take. What does it mean for the other characters? I guess maybe it shows Tsutomu that he's an important part of the team as well ...but I don't think that was the intention, and I don't think it means anything to the other characters. All it basically achieves here is skipping the tournament - I assume to focus on the singles matches the next day. But ...why are we doing that? This is something the viewer would have wanted to see, so why skip it? Seems like an odd choice to me.

Because her heatstroke is a plot device meant to force the main cast to lose and try the group tournament again next year. If the main group wins too much after only being together for 3 months it makes the credibility of pro Karuta sus
