How dare you dislike my waifu ? Sapphire is a nice caring and clever girl who can suggest leaving the two together when Kumiko and Shuiichi meet at the station. Hazuki is an air-headed girl, but I sense that she does have some good qualities (apart from being air-headed - need someone like her in a series like this).

I like Asuka also quite a lot, but there is something in her that makes me think she is not what she appears to be. Reminds me a bit of Satoshi in Hyouka series. I guess Asuka and Haruka are good friends, but I sense a tension/friction between the two.

Don't take my comments seriously. At least don't be offended by it.

Asuka is easily the best character so far, and has a way better personality than any of the four leads. I'm excited to see how the main cast develop though, stuff like how each of their attitude (mainly Kumiko and possibly Reina) towards music changes, Kumiko and Reina's relationship, etc. A decent series so far; nothing really annoys me but nothing completely impresses me either.

Also, when Sapphire named her contrabass George-kun, this was the first thing I thought of.

Another cute episode, naturally! Can't really fault the series so far. Teacher was harsh without being cruel about it, and never even got angry. He's pushing them to be their best, even if they can't see it yet. Need more Midori/Sapphire!

I actually really like this episode. I'm in a band too so I can totally relate.
Love the salt the teacher gave lol. It did sound awful.

This anime came at the perfect time, after the movie "Whiplash" and last 2 season's "Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso". This one's not as strong and not as sad as the later but I'm finding it to be very enjoyable and relaxed. I kindda want to know what happened with the enthusiastic second years. Kousaka really frustrated to see the others don't really care about the band or the competitions that much.

It is behind why Reina Kousaka would purposely choose to go to a high school that did not have a decent concert band when her dream was to go to the nationals. Currently, without that explained or provided a proper reason, her frustration seems to be pointless drama as in reality she could only blame herself.

Ehhh.. I'm kind of disappointed... This anime is pretty boring so far. The last episode was really dragging until like the last 5 min of the episode. Hopefully next week will be better. I'm still holding out on dropping this series because I usually love shows by KyoAni, but I definitely might drop this later in the season if it continues to drag.

Great, great episode. I don't find it boring at all tbh. The dysfunction of the ensemble reminded me of my high school concert band and how... unmotivated everyone was. And this episode captured that feeling perfectly.

Hopefully there will be a legitimate explaination why Reina enrolled into Kitauji High School, but untill then your assumption will be into consideration.

Possibly, like Aoi (a third year student and Kumiko's old friend when they were in an elementary school) said, I guess Reina failed to enter a more appropriate high school to go to the Nationals, too.

I'm really liking this show so far. I don't think I've ever been able to relate to a show this much. Band was almost my entire social life in high school and college. I can sort of relate to how Kumiko and Kousaka and probably a lot of the second years that quit feel. I always had the fortune of being in some really good bands, but I also joined choir in the 12th grade. I got stuck with the tenors even though I'm a bass, and none of the other tenors cared much and wouldn't put in work during sectionals. On top of that, hardly any of the choir members could read music. It made it frustrating and sort of made me want to quit even though I love singing (fortunately, I didn't have to make that decision since I was only in there for my last semester of high school).

Does Japan really tune to A=442? That seemed weird to me. Also, that tuner/metronome combo looks a lot like one I used to own, but that was made by Korg. And why are they learning circular breathing? That's hardly a useful thing.

Ah so troubles begin and frustrations build as different band members have different levels of enthusiasm. The instructor came across as a bit harsh if not exactly wrong. Kumiko's sister on the other hand just seemed harsh. Well...let's see where it might go from here...

Well, I sort of know the reasons actually (your question is legitimate and you might guess from the existing episodes), and I would be extremely surprised if it won't be explained or at least hinted in the series in the next few episodes, but I won't spoil it here.

The Japanese might have a tendency not to express things right in your face, so people of other cultures might find this series or Hyouka or Tamako unexciting. And this isn't an extremely "exciting" story either- a high school wind orchestra band having issues. But I assume that the more you chew this, you get a better taste of it.

In one of the last sequences of this episode, you see her face change from frustration, to a slight regret maybe, then determination. Which is done quite well.

Maybe not undecided. In the last scene of this episode, she narrates with a tone of enthusiasm, that after hearing Reina play, they all went home without a word, and started practicing upon their own initiative from next day. And her eyes showed some enthusiasm. She greeted her senpais with joy when she found them coming to the room when the club activity was supposed to be suspended until the section leaders decided on how to react to the supervisor.

She probably now wants to be as good as Reina. The word of canola (flowering mustard 菜の花) featured in the ending according to the language of flowers (花言葉 at least in its Japanese version) is ”competition 競争" and "brightness (or bright love) 快活ないしは、快活な愛". ED animator Naoko Yamada always plays with such symbolism. As far as I know from the original manga and novel sidestories on official website, there will be some serious competition, and an aspect of admiration (or respect? though between whom I won't say).

"yay!! we're going to nationals!!.... as long as we don't have to work for it.... or something."

I dunno. I consistently performed well at NYSSMA(yearly new york music comp/evaluation), did regional state band every year, all-state band once ... If my high school band had been like this, then I'd have said "fuck it!" and looked for people to start a chamber group with.

My high school marching band was exactly like this. We were the second worst in our county, the only time we've ever been in second place was when there were only two bands competing. At the end of every summer we would all be really enthusiastic, and tell ourselves and each other that this year will be different. This year we will be good. But old habits set back in and unmotivated students kept the overall bar low. I've always believed that the saying, 'You're only as strong as the weakest link' was especially applicable in band setting (I'm not implying that this saying is appropriate in other areas of life). Every year the good students were frustrated at the overall performance and attitudes, and every year our band got smaller. By the time I was a senior our marching band had only about 30 students, and this is including the color guard and drum line/pit. This show really hits close to home for me.

After school clubs works differently in Japan. The teachers doesn't run the club, they just oversee it. His job isn't to teach them, it's the responsibility of the students to manage themselves.
Source: my mother who is Japanese who was really surprised at how involved my band director/teacher was in band.

This was an excellent episode. The teacher made it absolutely clear that he had no interest in treating the musicians in his band like children in a kindergarten. I am definitely excited to see how this bunch of easy-going mediocres clash with the other students and ultimately how the teacher plays into this whole situation.

This episode is still not too much play music, even internal conflicts raised into a story. With the slow story, I think it takes a few episodes to get into real music.

I think I'm only one here who desperately want to punch all the characters in this anime. It's easily not a bad show so far but the character's faces really piss me off. And no that's not because of moe, I just hate it with no solid reason. Still interested with the main conflict of the club though.

But he can't be that good. Many here are talking about the memories of the time they were in band. Well I don't have those memories. In the US band (concert/marching/symphonic) were a class. We got a grade. The band director actually taught us. Sight read, worked sections, worked ensembles, he even did warmups and tuning.
He just didn't say "practice until your good enough to play well in an ensemble then get me". I'm assuming this is how it's done in many places in the world. This is just making a good story of how Japan does their music clubs. I can't really relate to this procedure.

Sensei deserves a medal in my opinion cause this band is horrible. They slack off, don't do shit and expect to take part in competition. I personally wanna slap biggest part of the members for being idiots.

"Oh how dare he say we are shit! Let's slack off some more and be even bigger shits"

Losers -_-

Someone needs to speak up and fast. I would rather have a small band that actually tries than massive full of slackers. If I were a second year, I would quit too.

From a student's perspective the teacher seems to be not helpful at all and he comes out as kind of annoying... but I do agree with the teacher's perspective as the students can't collaborate properly.

Can't wait to see if they will all do something, or our main 4 characters.

It was a great feeling to hear "Shinsekai Yori" (the music) since the anime SSY was the most recent show I have finished. I knew I heard that music somewhere else.

Quite the realistic show. Reminds me of many of the dimensions surrounding orchestra back in highschool. They've done a good job of capturing the atmosphere, which I kind of like. Siblings complain about it when you practice, there are some senior members who have no drive and just lead a poor example for newer members, and then there are those that are extremely serious and dedicated. They can't help but feel frustrated by the others who bring the rest down. Teachers can be pretty harsh in music, but in many cases it is because they can see through the laziness and lack of commitment and drive. Of course, it isn't just some horrendous activity that brings dismay to everyone, I loved orchestra and the pay off you got when everyone put in an honest effort, regrouped, and pulled through with an excellent performance. I can't wait for those moments in this show, because thus far they have captured everything else well enough. That said, I don't remember anyone screaming at the top of their lungs on a hillside... maybe I just wasn't a part of the hill-screamer group.

Narration earnest but not boring, good mix of funny parts with other very technical and related to real problems, I left a good impression. Everything then is crowned with a really good quality in drawings and animations. Also very beautiful colors and scenes. Brava KyoAni, so go!

Not sure how anyone could see this as melodramatic. I think it's spot-on and very realistic in terms of drama. Lots of politics involved. Heck it applies to anything that involves a large group of people trying to accomplish a task - there will always be those that slack off and those that are motivated. I've never been in a band before, but if you've been in raid groups in MMOs that is a perfect example. If you've ever been in a raid guild that tried to AT LEAST be top 100 in WoW, the politics can be insane.

The thought of a band where you have to actually face those politics in person? cringe
