| Ping Pong gets talked about because it is a series of great intellectual quality whereas NGNL gets talked about because... pedo fanservice, ecchi and blatant gamer power fantasies, which certainly has a mass appeal among the Western otaku and teenage crowd. Anyway, Spring's Top 4 are easily better than anything in my last year's Top 10 which is pretty amazing. 2014's Space Dandy, Jojo, Mushishi, Ping Pong, Sidonia make it a great year. Best season in years. |

If it helps, I really do enjoy Ping Pong perhaps even more than NGNL, but I don't like it being used as a tool to mock other series, especially those on NGNL's "level" It's usually the fans that make an anime look bad to me, not the anime itself. I'm probably very easy to please in the end. But I'm just saying what I said before because I'm one nasty misanthrope and I despise exceptionalism. I just wanted to point out that popularity can be due to several reasons. Some series get popular because they really stand out and convince a lot of people with their qualities even though they don't have real mass appeal... and some just use cheap tactics and try to generate popularity by being conceptualized in a very specific way. Usually not very favourable and a bit risky as they usually peer into market niches that are flooded with similar titles that try the same - but worth it if they succeed. That's all there is to it. |

| A bunch of great shows thus far (Ping Pong, Mushishi, Jojo, Sidonia) and some very entertaining stuff (NGNL, Kamigami no Asobi). Heck, even lame shows were actually sort of fun to complain about (Mahouka, Black Pedo Bullet). Very good year so far. |
