.....since I posted here now I think the word "virgin" isn't quite appropriate. let's say beginner lol

I hit myself in the head with a devilstick once.... but no, hitting myself in the head with stuff is not part of my non-anime interests.

good books, movies and poems are though ........ hm, sounds kinda boring

you're right, Rocket was deflowered here(does that make sense in german?). we all like good books, and poems and movies.

here's a nice excerpt from John Donne

"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee."

if you translate "deflowered" into german... it doesn't make sense. the only thing people here would think about when someone says "deflowered" is fixing up their garden.

and I beg to differ.... there are lots of people who don't like poems and think Sports Illustrated and Vogue equal books ^^ those are not special interests but not as common as they should be

ah, John Donne...

not really..... like..... if you talked about spinal disc herniation or the informal "slipped disc" and I wouldn't already know what that is I wouldn't get it....... because the german medical term is "Bandscheibenvorfall". okay, one could use the latin term for it of course but that wouldn't help much either. not me at least

and yes, that is a weird example

chemical compounds are only slightly different, as far as I know
as for diseases.... some are only slightly different, others are completely different. it happens a lot that I read something about a disease (90% of the websites I visit are in English) and have to look it up in a dictionary because the german term is too different for me to immediately make the connection

i know lots of scholarly articles i see in the fields of chemistry and biology are jointly written by authors from countries of different languages, so i was thinking some of it might be a bit similar.

some are... and there are the latin terms of course lol but there are also enough that are completely different. and then there are words (not just chemical, also every day terms) in English that sound like German words but they have entirely different meanings.
I wish it wasn't like that... English would be a lot easier for me then lol

lol, but i would think that they needed to come up with a substitute. the thing about english is that it is a mix of a whole bunch of the Indo-European languages, which is why, grammatically, it can be such a pain to learn because it's so counterintuitive sometimes.

yeah, it's definitely different than learning, say, spanish or french or italian... or I could just say latin. those languages make more sense grammatically but still....most people I know learned English far better than e.g. Spanish, even if they had 7 years worth of classes in that other language. hm, maybe has something to do with the fact that one can't really avoid English language nowadays in many parts of the world.
Still...I wish there weren't so many "false friends" in the English language, making me believe they mean something entirely different from what they actually do ;D

Hmm... never heard of "false friends" before. However, similar sounds with different meanings. Yes, those are definitely false friends.

"bald" is a very clear example - with German being "soon" and in English being a "lack of hair".

"Cognates" are similar sounds and meanings. Such as "hound" and "hund" - both refer to dogs (more or less).

More false friends...

"hi" or "high" in English... vs... "hai" in Japanese

XD

Then again, y'won't find many cognates within Japanese -- unless -- it happens to be a word borrowed in English... such as "beer" and "biru". XD

In any case, I like that table of words. Yet, I'm disagreeing with some of the word entries.

oh the japanese like to use german words too, judging from some anime lol german names, terms......... well, it takes some work for me to actually hear them because they can't pronounce them right to save their lifes, but they like them xD

German language is gold.......... if anything needs some redefining, it's English xD I really think that German is one of the most beautiful languages... grammatic, sound... if used right lol

Of course. Meanings need not be exact - just similar. As long as the basic concept this there...

Well - it IS a job in of itself. Sadly, my cowardice is to the point of being scared of approaching women. However, kids - that's a very good idea to think about. At church, I tend to see a bunch - and - they're the happiest little buggers that I've seen. Also, I have nephews (ages 3 and 7). They're awesome kids.
