Well, merit is subjective. Who knows, maybe he's provoking the conversation for the sake of gathering different opinions, which he can later use for his doctorate degree in literature or something like that ^^ I've seen people doing that. Or maybe he just likes to have an argument, like I often do. Or maybe he just loves to hate or is a troll. Or maybe there's something else... Who knows... I don't agree with the lack of foreshadowing or poorly directed plot twist too, but having to argue with JizzyHitler here made me carefully rewatch the show from the start and catch some interesting plot points I would've totally missed otherwise. I'll share some of them with you later tonight. It also gave me a much better understanding of the show as a whole, and what else could I ask for?

Oh I'm not saying he shouldn't do it. On the contrary. I hope all of his efforts are rewarded by him proving himself right and hating the show. It almost feels to me like that's what he really wants. I have a lot of faith in the creators considering how well this show has been thus far. And it wasn't good BECAUSE it wasn't supernatural. It was good because it was well written, well composed, interesting, funny without using common anime comedy tropes, etc. They've earned my trust, and therefore I am more inclined to believe the show will continue to be good because I doubt those mechanics will change much.

Obviously I may be wrong and grow to dislike the show. God knows it's happened before, but I don't understand why you'd be so skeptical of people who managed to entertain you this much for 7 weeks already? What, they're going to suddenly become bad writers?

Completely unexpected, took a totally drastic turn from being Kamen Rider: Kick-Ass Edition. In my mind, I couldn't help but ask if those last five minutes were just some dream, but the way it ended almost clarifies that this is a new reality. This show jumped from a 9 in my opinion to a pseudo 10 if the series turns out great in the end.

GREAT Episode.

My reasoning for that is that it's about the expectations.

When people who are watching this show while it's still airing (ie. everyone posting here), they form their expectations on what the premise is. In this case, it seemed like it would be a sort of slice-of-life sentai show.

When this expectation was (supposedly, although I'm now more sure that it was) shattered with the reveal in this episode, people who assumed the premise I described feel that they've been cheated.

This isn't the problem with people who will start watching the show after the show has aired, as they have the full picture to look at. They'd assume it's an deconstruction (or reconstruction. I'm not too sure at this point) of a regular sentai show with a slow start.

(Again, only a speculation, as we don't have the actual confirmation of the events at the end yet. But now I hope they're real, if only so that most of the stuff I've said on this thread would hold up).

I think my favorite show of the season just got ruined

the problem with this shift is that they pulled it straight out of their ass, they could have implemented foreshadowing or hints at it but just pulling it out of no where especially so late in the series is just incredibly poor writing

My thought exactly, but I'll be patient and see how they back their ass up in the next episode, though I really doubt it. Next episode title will be "Attack of the Army of Evil!". I really hope that they could pull it out of this mess, because I really liked Samurai Flamenco.

I am really impressed of this show's OST, they have some really good one, for emotional scene like talk between Goto and Hazama, and for battle scene like those against the gorilla. Oh and, how funny that this episode discussion spanned out to 19 pages when we had average of 5 pages per chapter discussion lol.

Edit: Now that I've calmed down from the mindfucked I received earlier, I have to say that Sugita's voice acting has improved with his role of Goto, and I like it.

And, this is the best 7th episode of the season. <3

What do you mean "late in the series"? It's a two-season 22 episode show, we're less than a third of the way through. It might have been nice to get some kind of foreshadowing that there are real supervillains out there, but there's still 15 episodes to go. There's plenty of time to find out what King Torture is up to, and whether or not he's related to Flamenco's dead parents (I suspect that he is, otherwise why have that perfect superhero backstory?).

5/5, glad this show is kicking it up a gear.

I wonder if the last 5minutes had anything to do with the director wanting to work with Masayoshi again.

I personally like the direction of the story and how it's progressing. I would be very disappointed if it went into the full capcon/marvel superhero-supervillain story.

What makes the twist so great is that I started the show reading the description and watching the intro and thinking "Maybe he's actually going to get super powers and fight super villains at some point in the show".

But later the show makes me thing that's not going to happen. I actually had thought it'd lead there in the first place, but it convinced me otherwise. And then it actually leads there after I'm totally convinced and then I'm just blown away. It made me realize how I shouldn't have let my guard down.

I love this anime.

Well that is one heck of a plot twist for sure... Its like in a car going at 1 kph then after 1 second your going 900000000000000000000000 kph.

But if that last 5 minutes was indeed reality on the shows Universe/Story.. then i guess its safe to say that the opening clip will come true in the next episodes that are coming with Masayoshi, having that red armor + the rocket boosters on his elbow and foot.

Or maybe they set up a new team just like how SF made their hero thing but instead of helping people they are instead causing trouble. To make SF more popular/stand out.

And with how Ishihara's relationship end up with his Stalker guy. I got a feeling the leader of the newly made Army of Evil is Ishihara's Stalker..w ho knows..

Either way epic plot twist in here!

I wonder who's Goto's Girlfriend>?!

So, while looking for the 'lost foreshadowing', I caught the following dialogue in episode one:
Call me "Masayoshi." I prefer that name because it uses the characters for "justice."

And the next moment I was checking the kanji meanings of all other characters' first names. This brought some interesting but inconclusive results. So I decided to check the meanings of their last names too. And boy did I got excited by the findings!

Many of the characters had actually very simple and plain names. Their last names had something to do with plain civilian life, rice fields, or other empty spacy area-like or nature-related meanings. Their first names were pretty self-speaking too: light, pure, clear, etc. These are: Ishihara (Masayoshi's manager), Konno Akira (HIGHROLLERS HI president), Maya Mari (Samurai Girl), Morita Moe (the blue-haired girl), Harazuka Jun (the 'gadgets' professor). And I think these are the side characters of the story and won't severely impact the story after they got introduced. In other words, we shouldn't pay much attention to them.

Two more characters seem to be somewhat more interesting, although it's quite questionable and I might be overthinking here. Anyway, Misawa Mizuki. Her last name (Misawa) literally means three swamps. Even though this also has something to do with nature and/or spacy area (and is a very common kanji in Japanese surnames), swamp is not just a field, it's rather a wet field (in which somebody could actually sink and drown). I took this as a potential sign that her first name could have a certain meaning. Literally it translates to something extremely rare and good like a long-awaited rain after a hot summer season. So may be at some point later in the story she'll help Masayoshi to survive.
The second questionable name is, yes, of course, Gotou Hidenori. His last name (Gotou) means "behind wisteria". It's again in some way related to nature, but I guess wisteria is rather used as an allusion to "Fuji Musume" kabuki dance. Google it. Not sure who's the maiden here - Masayoshi, Gotou himself or his girlfriend xD And his first name (Hidenori) means English + benevolence, which again means something good. I guess his role in the show is to be a partner to Masayoshi xD

And... guess what? There's still one character missing! Yes-yes, it the Kaname "Red Axe" Jouji. And this one is really big! His last name (Kaname) means: pivot; vital point; cornerstone; key element; essence! His first name (Jouji) is the one that's the most confusing. The 'Jou' part refers to height, measure, or rather something huge (in comparison to a human being), e.g. 3 meters as opposed to 1.7 meters of average human height. The 'Ji' part can either refer to curing (healing) or ruling (governing). And these two meanings can lead to something completely opposite, especially keeping in mind that he's one of the key elements of the whole show. So is he the 'doctor' or the 'emperor'? The latter could be a potential hint for Red Axe to be King Torture! This is of course pure speculation and he might actually become Masayoshi's saviour... I don't really know, yet. It's just that Kaname's name really stands out from all others and considering how little time he got so far in the show... I'm really... really curious about his role. Is he on the good side, or is he the villain?

So... This is it. Perhaps somebody can think of a better interpretation of all these names. Would be interesting to read your thoughts.

I'm pretty sure this is going to turn out to be a dream sequence or part of a TV show they're filming or something. If not, then this is a really huge swerve. I was greatly enjoying the series up to this point, not sure I will continue to with this change.

I know there have been anime that had a supernatural turn like this one, but its surprising to see.
The first couple episodes were realistic and believable. But slowly it got more exaggerated.

not sure i like where this is going to be honest. I liked the simple human hero vigilante and the great characters. I just hope they pull it off well, i'm sure they will but idk, part of me wishes it stayed with regular people and he progressed to bigger things like mafia and that crap. I enjoy the relationship of the characters most of all though, i'll ofc keep watching to see how this pans out.

Part of me hoped that was a dream or something lol

Well, the story with his grandfather was a bit too fishy....but I guess his reaction is to be excepted! He was way too young to remember any of his parents but it was really nice that he talked it over with Goto, they sure are really close!!! ^^

Mari was creepy, I'm waiting for the moment she snaps. It's drawing near, I'm sure of it!!! Eeeeks.....

That ending couldn't have been any oddER!!!
A gorilla appears and on top of that with a guillotine....really, just what exactly happened in this episode?!??! King Torture...somehow I can't see this mix in with the rest of the plot, or at least not in this particular way....

lmao god i had all sorts of things pictured for this episode but really we just have a case of.... 1-6 reasonable realistic sort of anime, hint of slice of life, humour with an everyday human being trying to do good and help people.....

last five minutes of episode 7 we have a gorilla with a guillotine for a stomach and a secret evil organisation that has just revealed themselves even though we had no inkling or clue ANYTHING like this existed or was EVER going to exist.......

mmmmmmmm...... kay

pulled that out their ass really didn't they? funny as hell and totally mind-boggling to watch, my mouth was down to my knees, but this show may have just lost its unique edge, everything i liked it for is about to be turned on its head and made into and normal walking supernatural/action cliché ;(

WRONG! You spend THE ENTIRE first book wondering if there are supernatural elements or not. Martin keeps it vague as long as he possibly can.
Therefore if Martin showed supernatural stuff you won't complain, 'cause it's been foreshadowed before. In Samurai Flamenco nothing of that sort has been mentioned before. The series remained a SoL series for 6 episodes now without any hints of it becoming a supernatural series, so it turning 180 degrees is awful writing. Why? 'cause it makes no sense. How did suddenly supernatural stuff appeared in the realistic world Samurai Flamenco built?

Well calling it realistic is a little bit of a stretch. We have girl idols running around in a pink jeep twisting balls and a guy in red pajamas actually decreasing crime in a big city.
Realistically they will all be dead or locked in a mental institution after being arrested. Also realistically they wouldn't even find criminal to fight against cause it's kind of impossible to be exactly there when a crime hypes let alone be there all the time.

Is this really where this show is going now?

I DON'T KNOW IF I LIKE IT?
I feel like they could have went in a similar direction that was more realistic like just turning people into super-strength apes or something. But apparently people have said that the manga hinted at supernatural aspects early on, so I guess I will have to give it the benefit of the doubt...

Let me tell you all why you weren't expecting the last five minutes of this episode. It's just bad story telling. SF spent 6 episodes authenticating realism; normal people trying to become super heroes, it being awkward, real, and challenging. Then, I guess the writers decided to dispose of it because it was "boring" or some other stupid reason. Insert new plot to create excitement, right?! Let's make this show--that's actually doing new things (an anime character with a real job and a half gay relationship with another guy who also has a paying job)--and make it exactly like the superhero shows that the show references!! Lol WUT?? We get cuts and bruises, some life threatening situations, a bit of blood in the first 6, exactly what you'd expect, but NOW we're lobbing HEADS OFF and throwing people of out four story buildings?? Are you serious? Of course everyone is surprised, this show broke all the rules it was writing from the beginning.

I thought this could be a cool show that would do some original things, but I guess not. Never lost respect for something so quick before. Dropped.
