My favorite quotes from animes:

Those who seek miracles will never experience one. The hand of salvation only extends to people
who try to make miracles happen. - Ef a tale of melodies.
I destroy worlds. I create worlds. - Code geass
We are humans. - Shinsekai yori
100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10km run EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! - One punch man

Probably want to show them a more mature, dark adult themed anime then. Anyone of these would work. I also wouldn't show anything which has to do with being in highschool.

Steins;Gate - Time travel thriller with heavy themes and is very intelligent. Starts a bit slow but builds beautifully. (It's what I showed my girlfriend and it got her hooked on Anime.)
http://myanimelist.net/anime/9253/Steins;Gate

Psycho Pass - Dark sci-fi themes, think minority report, a great story.

Black Lagoon - Action packed anime with plenty of mature themes.
http://myanimelist.net/anime/889

Spice and Wolf - Completely different to the other three. It is a good adventure romance story but doesn't have that much "action."

Pick whatever feels right depending on the other persons tastes. That being said, I highly highly recommend Steins;Gate. It is my favorite anime, and it is brilliant. I would dare say it is one of, if not the best, time travel story ever.

Higurashi no taku koro ni is the first thing that comes to mind when people refer to anime as childish

Other good alternatives would be:
Attack on titan
Baccano
Spice and Wolf
Black Lagoon
Steins;Gate
Fate/zero

Oh god please no Mirai Nikki. You'll only make them think anime is not only childish but weird and retarded too.

I second Death Note, Black Lagoon and Phantom. I guess Shingeki no Kyojin isn't a bad choice either. I'll go ahead and add Jormungand. Maybe Canaan, not too sure about that one.

Also for TTGL the insane amount of fanservice in episodes 1-2 might turn some people off. I know it did my friends when I tried to get them into anime...

oh and typing that reminds me, I pretty much got my friends into anime by watching Another with them. :)

first get them hooked on hentai, then suggest anime as an alternative when tentacle rape gets boring.

Anyone that actually has standards and doesn't give in to whatever show that gets hashtags on twitter won't find attack on titan "mature"

Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell are the way to go

If they are younger, Death Note and FMA

I showed my friend Clannad first (after story too, of course), but now he won't watch anymore anime because hes convinced there's no point because hes already watched the pinnacle of anime. I mean, it may be, but still. So be wary of that

He's basically mistaken anime for some kids show. Mindfuck his brain by giving him some mindfucking plot twist anime.

Stein;Gate - This would be a nice one. It revolves around science and the theme is pretty matured.

Code Geass - Let him know this one high schooler badass that could make the most mindfucking coup d'etat ever, imo.

Monster - I haven't watch this , but from the review I've read it's pretty good.

Durarara!! - This has one of the most mindfucking twist. Expect the unexpected.

//excuse for my rudeness
"Children of Japan. And those who were once children. Listen! This is not a dream. This is not fiction. In reality, your superheroes were always fighting. To teach viewers courage and the meaning of justice! No matter how many enemies there are. No matter how strong evil is. Just remember. Does any another country have so many heroes? Has any another country been protected by multiple superheroes? Stand with me, friends! Remember when you used to watch your superheroes!
Once you may have given up this dream. But today, you can be a hero!"
