I think young people have not given some old music the chance , but it because they are inexperienced , in time they will get in contact with jazz , Barenboim , blues , bossa nova and start to understand all these pop riff and runs they like so much came from back then . My girl love One Direction yet after i taught her she started to love Ella , Armstrong and so on . To me 90`s music is young hahah i was part of the generation of stoopid teens calling to the radio stations to ask for nirvana , smashing pumpkins or radiohead I love Mariah and Whitney . So summarizing what we call old music is relative .I suppose there are some artist today that shall and should be preserved as innovators none come to mind right now because i do not have enough time lets just mention Mumford and Sons although many of their songs sound alike lets give them a chance :) |

I've always prefered 80s metal over today's generation of 'dubstep/electronic/chugging metal'. It's like they're taking the glam rock looks from the 80s and combined it with the current mainstream dubstep sound. But to each his own. |

Contemporary postrock, 90s black and prog metal, 80s metal, 70s prog rock, 17-1800s classical. That's the stuff I usually listen to I suppose. And lol @ the /mu/ chart. Neutral Milk Hotel huehuehue. A lot of good stuff there though. |

Most people that I know don't define themselves by only one genre of music, for instance I would consider myself a fan of "old music" - favorite genre is rock, mainly classical rock (stuff like Led Zeppelin ... Don't really like the Beatles too much though, they were too "pop-like", need good instrumentation) and also love Jazz (especially Latin Jazz and funk) but I also listen to genres like Dubstep and Electronic so ... My friends are also the same way usually, they listen to classical rock and jazz too but also listen to rap (personally don't like rap) ... I met people in college though that asked "I don't get your shirt, what is Led Zeppelin a reference to?" when I used to have a Zeppelin shirt ... So I mean I would say that the newer generation isn't as in touch with older music but I don't think older music's popularity is increasing or decreasing at this point for the most part. |

It makes you happy just like "I wanna hold your hand" and it's had a big personal impact on it's listeners as well. Is it complex? No. Is it innovative? No. Are the artists involved musically skilled? No. Does it have sonic or lyrical depth? No. Oh, well neither does any of the beatles music. Yeah, I think you'll like justin bieber. That is unless you are biased against today's music and was born in LE WONG GENAWASHUN. I'm pretty sure that some non-famous Beatles fans doesn't care about any of this. I know I don't. They may have just adapted their sound based on what was already around, but they made lots of people feel good with their music. When they came to America in 1964, the country was in mourning for JFK. With "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" spirits lifted. They still make people feel good today. The Beatles aren't my number one favorite rock n' roll musicians (that honor goes to David Bowie), but they have inspired me and made me happy. Why should a band only be measured by their historical, political, cultural, or financial impact? Personal impact should count for something too. Also, I like david bowie, but he's not really rock n roll. I'm not biased against today's music (I edited my original topic post to show that)but that doesn't mean I like Justin Bieber or any of the other cookie-cutter teeny bopper crap. He and others are just being used as poster children for a cookie-cutter teen bubble. I hate their music. However, it doesn't mean that they don't deserve to be put on somebody's pedestal because of the positive impact they have on them. People can say "this band is better than The Beatles" or "The Beatles are the best band ever" but they are neither this nor that. There will be people who dislike and love The Beatles and any musician you can think of. Nobody is ever really the best or the worse because everybody feels differently about music. Also, I know Bowie isn't rock n' roll b/c he's done more than one music genre, but he definitely has the spirit of it. He does whatever he wants without caring what anyone thinks and that's one of the things about him that's very admirable. |

The Beatles were a boy band and they were okay. But when they started doing drugs, their whole music changed. Their late work is thought provoking and trippy. You can go to another world jut by imagining the meaning of their lyrics. Just give Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds a try. Imagine the picture they are trying to put in your head and try to analyze everything. This is how I realized how awesome the Beatles were. In fact, most of the psychedelic rock artists are awesome. It's a shame that people don't get that nowadays. |

i am pretty sad how ppl in this discussion think that hip-hop is a newer music genre whilst it is almost 40 years old, i find it even sadder that some ppl think that todays new school is better then oldschool and 90s newschool :( but about the question, i think that kids these days have a wider music collection just becouse they can, they have everything from frank zappa till on direction within two seconds. and they start to listen a lot of ols music becouse when they are young they get critisism from older generation that their music is crap, wich if you haven't noticed happens in every generation of music, older ppl didn't like the beatles or presley becouse they "ruined" "real music", and now justin bieber and one direction are doing the same (altough i'm not their fan, but common give them some slack) |

Why do people care if others don't like oldschool and only like One Direction etc... You should listen to what you like regardless of when it was made, who it is or what genre it is. I listen to The beatles, Jimi Hendrix, old school rappers such as Slum Village to some newer stuff such as Kendrick Lamar, I even have some Chief Keef on my ipod because some of his beats are dope. The point I am trying to make is that you should like who you like regardless of anything else and you shouldn't belittle other peoples choice in music and really why do people care if Justin Beiber is popular or not? How does it have an effect on your life in such a way that makes you hate him and his fans? |

Well, I like to listen to 70s and 80s music, and because my parents listen to 50s and 60s, I hear a good mix of music a lot. I love 70s and 80s though. I think the younger generation has two groups. A group that is in the sort of "in crowd" and follows what is popular, and there's a group of people disgusted with their own generation and they do other stuff. Hence why you might see younger people listening to old music. I think that 70s and 80s music have much more style to it then modern music. It's not hard to access older music either; access to the internet means easy access to a vast store of music, allowing the new generation to experience more variety and find tastes and interests from even the past generations. Also, I don't like the Beatles. ._. |

Well, it seems after reading this thread, I have a pretty weird taste in music.. Anyway, I'm not even much into it - usually, I'll listen to some music before I sleep or on the bus, but that's about it. I remember in 2nd-4th grade I listened to modern music only - didn't know how to use a computer back then, and I don't think YouTube was popular at all, either. However, later on I discovered 80s music.. Specifically Italo Disco. I think I heard a song on the radio, and after checking out some songs from the same artist, really liked them. So I proceeded to listen to songs from that genre, and really liked them all. Of course I tried other 80s music too (Italo Disco was mostly made in 80s), and lots of it was good. Bon Jovi is not bad, Led Zeppelin has some nice songs as well. Also, funny thing, since he was pretty popular to the day he died, I didn't even know Michael Jackson produced music back in the 80s - and I guess that's why I thought some of his modern songs weren't horrible. His 80s stuff is still better, though. Right now I pretty much listen to Italo only, with maybe a few other 80s songs, and several decent new school ones. Speaking of new school, I haven't really found any bands/artists I like - usually just one song from them is good, and the rest is crap. For example, Green Day's Broken Boulevard isn't bad, and One Republic's All the Right Moves I like - but none of their other songs interest me in the least. But, there is actually one band that I like two songs from - they aren't exactly popular.. But you 80s lovers should really check them out - Fire Tiger. I suggest their Energy and The Same Old Song songs, both are really nice and sound like the 80s. There's also Adele - I don't understand why people even like her. Everyone says she brought back good music - but while it's different from other new school music, I don't particularly enjoy it. Maybe it is just not my genre. And now let's talk about P!nk. So, apparently my mom listens to her.. I took a listen as well - and GOD, my ears fell off after just a minute. I, having listened to several of their songs, honestly think Justin Beiber and One Direction are better than P!nk. Cannot stand listening to her, I have to close my ears. Having that said, I also shamefully admit that I haven't listened to The Beatles at all - I remember listening to one of their songs for 10 seconds, and then closing the tab.. Even though I don't care for Rock 'n Roll I should really give them more of a chance, since they are so 'legendary'. In any case, that is my take on music.. But in the end, to each his own. |

In the last couple years more classic rap albums have come out than they have in the previous decade. Also new school is more experimental and varied in lyricism. Hearing a tribe called quest or brand nubian rap about "fuck faggots" is not appealing to me and NWA talking about how gangsta they are with basic rhymes and unvarying flows gets old very quick. Old school had no abstract lyricists like aesop rock. Beats were simpler. Rhyme schemes were simpler. People never experimented with flow. Lyrical themes were much much simpler. The vast majority of rap was just about "living in the streets." Rap was more about boasting and generally talking about how hyper-masculine you are or shitty "political" rap that was just about killing cops. Sure, there's a lot of incredible rappers from the 80s and 90s, but I think hip hop now is clearly better, more advanced in every sense of the word, and is definitely moving in the right direction. i don't see how oldschool had worse lyrical schemes than most newschool rappers, i mean you can't even compare mc's like rakim to a lil wayne or kanye west. i have to agree with you on the NWA thing cuz i'm not really a gangsta rap fan. and about subjects, when newschool came around the lyrics where more about boasting, thats true, but oldschool whas all about the hip-hop way of life: peace, unity, love and having fun. rap whas more about having fun. and you can't tell me that todays rappers are all about political critisism that isn't how cops are bad, or how gangsta they are, IF there is a period in time when rap wasn't about boasting then it surely isn't the time in wich we are living. and aother thing, one thing has really worsened over the years in hip-hop and that is beats, how come its al technoloical these days, it was awesome in the time when it whas jus remixed funk and jazz |

Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Magical Mystery Tour check these two albums out. The best of the Beatles. Your mind will be blown. No one listens to 80's music no more. It must be tough for you to find someone who shares the same taste. no one listens to 80s music? yeah right. the birth of post-punk, shoegaze, no wave, and the rise of metal. i think most hipsters/indie artists are spending a lot of time with 80s music (and with good reason) |

I just meant that people are not that interested in that kind of music no more. I think it's because the 80s is not that old and it's not new either. It's like the meddle child being ignored in some families, you see what I'm trying to say? Sure the 80s music still got a lot of fans, but not as many as before. And dude I'm sorry if that was offensive to you or to your favorite music in anyway. I didn't mean it. |

I have to say, my opinion, which none of you folks will give a shit about, is that '80s music is the shittiest brass-synth-addled vomit ever produced by man. Clearly we were entering an age where it was realised that if you involved more computers, you had to spend less money on human resources. There were very few popular composers who succeeded to use the new synthesiser technology to its greatest extent (some folks like Frank Zappa used the Synclavier very well). |

When I was in my teens I used to be into classic rock a lot, I listened to Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and all kinds of stuff like that. I went through a stage of liking modern heavy metal too. Now I'm a bit older though my music tastes are so varied, I listen to all kinds of strange and obscure stuff I find on the net or live during the festival season here in the UK. |

Personally I hate how people associate time a tune was recorded to judge it's value. If the music sounds good, it sounds good. "Good" music has existed for hundreds of years and will continue to exist(unless if we go extinct before that). The only thing is that the "mediocre" artists get so much attention because of their marketability and people in general listen to what's being sold to them. (People who listen to music for it's social aspects rather that it's auditory value). The major labels in music industry is a business so they try to promote the artists that are most marketable to society, they most likely don't want to take an artistic risk if it's not marketable to the general public. There's tons of good music today, you just gotta go out there and look for it whether that's on YouTube, festivals/attending shows, they're all viable options. Plus have an open mind because some things take a while to sink in. |

I'm 18 and have always listened to music behind my times. I played the violin/cello for quite some years in my school's orchestra and listened to classical from there. I still do to this day. I've always listened to classical rock or such as well since I was brought up with that music. I listen to indie rock, jazz, classical, nowadays though |

I think it's more a matter of quantity(centuries worth), the mass production and promotion than a matter of young people not liking old music, and you can't really be eclectic until you've spend a lot of time getting to know something and understand what you like/dislike about it. Some people do that, other have other priorities. |

It's often said that every generation brings about a new musical style. The musicians of the 50s - 60s developed rock and roll, and the next musical generation (70s - 80s) gave us harder stuff like metal, and the 90s evolved grunge. The current generation is no different, really. If anything, the changes are more radical. Electronic music is huge, and the community that makes it is thriving because electronic music can be made in your bedroom with only your computer. IMO, that is the musical legacy of the generation that grew up with the Internet. |

For me it was learning about my favorite band's influences that helped me get introduced into music from before I was born. For example, when I was in middle school, American Idiot by Green day had dropped. I was so into that album, i had to learn more about them and come find out they are influenced by the Ramones and from the Ramones I learned about The New York Dolls, the Stooges, Television, Patti Smith. and everything just took off there. |
