We have already discussed the crisis of the anime market in US here. Now I wanna discuss another topic: the manga market in US.

Manga Market (million dollars)
US 100 (2004) ---- 145 (2005) --- 200 (2006) --- 210 (2007)
Japan 5847 (1996) --- 4810 (2006)
France 50.7 (2000) --- 313.5 (2006) --- 319.2 (2007) #million euro

Total Graphic Novel Market in US (million dollars)
207 (2004) --- 245 (2005) --- 330 (2006) --- 375 (2007)

Manga distributers in US was disappointed at this data. The American comic sales increased by 10%, but the manga sales increased only by 5%. The article above speculated that this slowing down was due to the onset of the competition between the American comics and Manga, which had been considered to be in different categories. The rapid increase of newly released American comics kicked out manga from bookshelves of stores.
Did you guys notice anything wrong with the manga stores in your place?

and it's still increasing, so that's good.

I imagine from your comment that manga sales are increasing in some area where manga is still regarded as a new culture, but are declining in areas where manga was introduced relatively long ago and has become not attractive anymore.

I wonder if this is from people sitting in the aisles reading manga instead of buying it? (like I need another excuse to hate those people) I think the manga market is fine though, I doubt it will plummet like the DVD market did. I know many people are like me: I don't buy anime, but I do buy manga (much cheaper hobby). I think most people like to reread manga more than they like to rewatch anime.

I think that the spike in American comic sales is probably because of all the movies based on comics coming out lately.

It's a bit optimistic. Manga looks doing good only when compared to DVD, but DVD business is in awful situation. All the distributers except for Funimation are making debt.

Complaints from a US manga publisher.
Sakura-Con '08: Dark Horse Bemoans Manga Sales

He gave two reasons for the slow sales of manga in US.
1. The strict rating of manga and the resulting shrink wrap.
2. Scanlations
