Was I the only one who misinterpreted Shouma's friend for Tabuki at first? Why did I get the feeling that they look similar? And how much important to the story is that guy? I mean, so far all side, invaluable characters were replaced with those generic white human figures. The fact that this guy is properly drawn makes me think he might play a crucial part in the next episodes. What if he's Himari's destined one? xDDD
edit: but now that I think about it, there were also Kamba's girlfriends.. so perhaps this guy is not that big of a deal to the plot...

Tabuki's scars and the wounds one gets for using the diary... ahem... could it be related? I mean, could it be that Tabuki used the diary himself?

There's more to the episode title, that has been somewhat lost in translation. I'm totally convinced that it's another reference to the "Superfrog Saves Tokyo". And we've already seen that the frog is Ringo. LOL, made me laugh to see the frog eating the fly in front of the No.2. They really are such a couple xD
My question is though - who's the saviour? The frog, i.e. Ringo? Or rather... Momoka? Or could it be that Momoka is also a frog since she comes from the Oginome family? I mean, Takakura's children are all siblings -> all penguins. So Oginome's children are all frogs then, right?
In any case that's another +1 for possible foreshadowing of the saviour actions towards the world from Ringo's side.

Momoka being the PoC is shouting at us, BUT! If she really is.. WHY didn't she tell anything to Ringo about it? She did have a couple of chances to do that! And another question is... if Momoka is PoC.. then WHO's in Mario's hat? Who controls Mario?

Another question: how come No.2 was up and running while Shouma was off? Does it mean that he could still hear the fight? Oh... and the fact that Shouma ended up next room.. it might not be just convenient to the story.. at some point, I thought that perhaps Masako was able to make Shouma's friend win this ticket, so that Shouma would actually appear on stage? But that's a bit too much of guessing/planning from her side.. unless she was told to do so by Sanetoshi.. or unless Sanetoshi himself made that guy win such a prize and share it with Shouma.. OR... yet again.. perhaps that faceless friend will soon become another major character... we'll see...

I'm also quite impressed - saving Yuri from her mad dad.. kinda provoked the 95 accident. I mean that flying helicopter - exactly the same as the one Tabuki saw in his flashback in 1995 right during the bombing accident. It gave me a feeling that helicopters did not just bomb the subway, but also that enormous David tower... but then... if Yuri was saved by Momoka.. why does Yuri still have something wrong with her body? I'd expect that all physical wounds disappear from her body just like her father did... but it didn't happen.. why?

Finally, Momoka... the way she loved everything and everybody in this world... the way she saved people taking their pain instead... she's such a Jesus! She's such a Saviour of the world. She's such a Goddess. She's so much on the same level as Sanetoshi, yet completely opposed to his devil side. Perhaps, I wasn't the only one who noticed that reference, but it was so FABULOUS MAX!

yup, the reference is very clear
"savior of the world"
and how she got hurt ( even died as we will see later ? ) because of her saving other people and changing their lives
i think that even the diary refer to something but for now I will keep the thought to myself.

isn't she the same girl who was running around in Sanetoshi's library?

Think of Hellgirl. The person is sent to hell right away and you get cursed but if you have a knife cut from that person you sent to hell, even though you are wounded and that person was sent to hell, still does not remove that knife cut at all.

So if anything like Hellgirl, the diary only made Momoka pay up for saving Yuri not saving her and healing her.

momoka experiences spontaneous combustion, lol. Damn that sucks.

I think Yuri may have confused Momoka's words though. Momoka might have meant to love Yuri platonically like a friend, when it seems like in Yuri's reflection she's thinks and wants Momoka's words to be love. Or I could have misinterpreted that too. Oh well, it's a interesting anime!

Btw, the little girl running in Sanetoshi's library - yes, I'm pretty sure it was Momoka. And he referred to her as to "his love".

So, Momoka was Tabuki's love, Yuri's love, Sanetoshi's love... Momoka is love, God is love, Momoka is God? :P

I'm not sure about Momoka having anything to do with the hat. When Himari is in hat-mode, she's pretty mean, impatient and arrogant. It would take a lot to make the Momoka described by various people say the things hat-Himari said.

I'm also not sure about Sanetoshi being an evil entity - if anything, I find him rather playful. Of course he's kind of blackmailing Kanba, but Kanba seems to have started that shady business with the men in black all by himself, and before anything happened to Himari, if I remember correctly. Also, what would Sanetoshi want with money? I think he's playing a completely different game with Kanba here. I get the feeling it has something to do with the much appreciated incest here. Seriously - usually I don't like incest in anime at all, but I admit I was rooting for them up to now. As others have said, it's the first time for me to ship for an incestuous relationship and of course it looks as if it's not gonna happen this time. Sigh.

Anyway, we don't know anything about Sanetoshi's intentions, and there's no proof that what hat-Himari said about black bunnies overrunning the world is true, or that it's even a bad thing. Who knows, maybe the thing in Himari's hat is the "evil" force? Then again, I don't really think that things are that black and white in this show anyway.

Except for dad from hell! Man, that was really hard to stomach. I got terrible rape vibes from the scenes, I'm convinced it was meant to do that. The imagery with the hammer and chisel seemed pretty obvious to me, I thought the injuries were an addition to sexual abuse. Anyway, it was brutal on every level.

As always it was a great episode. I'm amazed that the show keeps up the quality, suspense and overwall awesomeness in every single episode, and the cliffhangers never get old. After watching an episode I go wtf! every time, with a happy but bewildered smile on my face. It only shows how fantastic this show is that the forum here is teeming with speculations, thoughts and theories. Such a great show!

GD this was a good episode! The most significant in this series so far.

f there's anything I hate, it's abusive parents. So Yuri's father is very much on my shit list. This was almost hard to watch. It kind of reminded me of certain episodes from Fruits Basket.

Seeing Momoka reminded me of the first time anyone saw Shinji's mother in Evangelion. Her appearance was understated to be sure, but you knew that when you saw her it was a big moment and that you were gonna learn a lot just from her very appearance. We even got to learn about what was so special about that diary, she even told us the rules that governed it.

It this leaves so many more questions now. We don't know when or how she got it, or why she specifically got it.

once again this show has gone where others fear to tread - looking straight into the void of darkness at the heart of humanity...we long to change fate, to forget abuse, to become someone else, to find true love...but what price will we pay to get what we want? is it worth it to sell one's soul for happiness? can one truly have happiness without a soul? questions most anime don't ask and wouldn't even know how - a mind bending experience through blackness to beauty and back again...

I agree =P She also has/had a way of travelling between parallel worlds, being able to specifically choose the difference she wants in the new world.... and all this comes at the small price of having to act as a human torch >_<

Changing the line of fate... EL PSY CONGROO! ...eh?

Though I always thought of something along those lines, mainly because of that sequence in the middle of the episodes (with the "Mawaru-Penguindrum" label moving along that "subway line" shaped map and the number of the episode next to that). Tere were lines (of lighter gray colour) branching off at some points. I felt like there was some purpose to them, like they were possible points to decide on a "new route". But this might just be a coincidence and me overinterpreting this. =D

That's what I thought as well.

Concerning Yuri's father... I'm not personally believing in a rape here - he was mad, but more in the sense of being obsessed with beauty. I'd rather take the chisel and tools at face value - the wounds are there after all. Her being naked might just have been necessary for his "work", but maybe it was just a stylistic device to make us feel the awkwardness and also the helplessness of Yuri. We don't know how far he went with those..."improvements", so that might be why Yuri does have some physical problems now. But seeing the Utena-Likeness, chances are we'll never get a definite answer on this. xD

Great episode. This show has gotten wonderfully twisted. Though I too am kind of disappointed how the yuri rape problem was solved but it was replaced by something much darker so all is forgiven. And, Momoka is getting more and more interesting and is turning out to be pretty much the central figure in all this.

What a dick father. WOW. That's one of THE best ways to traumatize your kids.

So Momoka also had access to the supernatural. And what the hell is up with that tower? How does a township/city allow something like that to exist?

They jumped out the inn, landed in a shallow hot spring and are completely fine. Logic.

So. Much. Happening. At. Once.

Dafuq. Child abuse? That's a messed up childhood Yuri had. What a sick and disturbing act by her father. Sick bastard. Momoka transferred her destiny (reminds me of Steins;Gate), healing her in the process and presumably also causing injuries to herself similar to Yuri's (how'd she get fractures from fire?).

Before Yuri could begin the act with Ringo, Shouma was there after all... that was pretty contrived (a.k.a. it was "fate" even though I refuse to believe in it) and then before she could continue, Masako appeared to challenge her.

On another note, I think having those two antagonists/non-protagonists voiced by two veteran seiyuu (with a lot of roles as protagonists under the belt) is kinda... interesting. Mamiko Noto vs Yui Horie.

Dat safe... excellent example of Chekhov's gun. No wonder it was briefly shown early on.

Wow. Just wow.

Yuri is actually remarkably well adjusted considering what her douche of a father did to her. And her whole backstory with Momoka was really moving. And Masako/Yuri fight was the combat of the hotties.

This is just my speculation at this point, but could Momoka's death in the incident in 95 have been the price for changing another fate?

This was quite a poignant episode on how family member have so much power over other siblings.
This happens so often it's not funny.

Especially when children are very young (This can even include adults though), they can be very easily influenced. Peer pressure is where most of these influences reside, but a pandemic, even today, is that parents and other siblings can basically get away with anything if it is within their family. That's why you hear (But also don't hear. Stockholm syndrome.) so many stories of abuse with aunts, uncles, fathers, mothers, ect.
Is can easily be plausible that having been told these things by her father, would definitely change her life. People don't understand how much power they have over their children (Or maybe, they do know exactly how much power they have, and take advantage).

You just have to pray that you can find someone, like in the show, that you can trust.
Even for me, that is very hard in this world. If I did not have my mother or my brother, I would have no one (yet :P).
I'm blessed with a great mother though. That is not this case here.

What a horrible father Yuri had. It's no wonder she has such a difficult outlook on life.
The writers really put in some great points into this script. These guys are much smarter than I was expecting (Especially after watching Revolutionary Girl Utena).
