THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
I am so happy that Dalian and Huey is back. That girl as follows,

was really nice. The blonde hair and eyes with the lab coat matches her nicely. I liked seeing her in the episode and Dalian eating bread was cute. The whole perfume thing and people going wild was pretty action packed. I liked it and that guy with the glass inside his skin stuck to it was gruesome.

Loved that the blonde girl saved Huey's life as follows,

that was really brave of her and noble but what I don’t understand is how the fuck is she dead in the spoiler
someone please explain how the fuck can you die when you have Tomes that can heal and revive among its astonishing over 900 000 Tomes collection? WTF seriously! That makes no damn sense but I did T_T Poor girl, she never deserved that death. Fuck unfairness, that’s all.

Decided to include all my terminology since episode 2 of this series in the list,
  • The whole Charon thing is real and can be read here. Very interesting myth.

  • When Dalian was talking about Quipu, well it really did exist and can be read here. A very interesting method indeed to look up.

  • When Dalian was talking about the Vedas mathematics, they also existed and can be read here. I also found out more of it in link 1, link 2 and link 3. Fascinating that was indeed for me.

  • Simonides of Ceos really did exist and can be read here. Apparently he was popular Greek lyric poet.

  • When Dalian was talking about Rasalhague, it is indeed a constellation and can be read about here. Rather interesting to know about it.

  • When Dalian talks about Asclepius, he really is a Medicine God. You
can read it yourself here. Really nice reading there.

  • In the last episode as Ragnarök is mentioned, well it really is quite a myth to to read about here. Superbly interesting.
Maybe I will add more later. Did not have time really to do that but there goes my chunk for this series. After all it has most amazing references to myths.

BTW I am done with the subs for this episode and Image Stitches in the spoiler
Dalian and Fiona both look splendid in them. The one of the plant is most nice.

Dammit, those buns that Dalian were eating looked delicious. I'm so jelly.
Blonde girl dying in the end was a nice twist.
The myth references is probably the biggest reason why I'm still watching this show, that and Flam. Which reminds me: No Flam this episode, I am disappointed.

It happened on the 5th episode.

Anyway, I liked this episode, but... what happened to the civet?

I'm extremely thrown off near the end of the episode as to how she died. Otherwise, this episode was pretty good.

(Dantalian no Shoka airs a week later than the main week of broadcasts.)

I gotta say that the use of perfumes as weapons was very entertaining.
Inumusume must be a conquering friend of Ikamusume, right?

Fucking dropping those buns though...

Finally, an episode (that involves Huey and Dalian) that has taken a step in the direction I was looking for: having the protagonists actually seem impactful to whatever it is that is happening on-screen~!

That's always been my biggest issue with this show; I have never felt as if Huey and Dalian did anything that made any sort of impression on what was going on. Sure, they would help out from time-to-time, but it kind of seemed as if all they were good for were the Gensho (or "Phantom Books") that they were dishing out. This episode, however, actually made me feel that they were characters that were necessary in the plot, which is good because I do like Huey and Dalian (especially Dalian)~

Yeah it was a pretty good episode but a sad one, Dalian finally made other friend whom she started to feel warmth talking to her to lose her in the end. That's some cruel fate, you can even feel how frustrated she was by looking at her expression when Fiona passed away.

One other thing.. The previous episode (ep. 6) was a prelude episode and it was named Episode 1-Extra you can see it's title at the end of part 1 so the air order was different from the chronological order. And this episode is actually Episode 6.
Guess they got back to the right order now.

Oh, noes! The buns!
And this was unexpected, they shortened the "Huey-grabs-a-random-Phantom-Book-from-Dalian's-chest"-scene.

Eh, anyway, I was hoping Hal and Flam would kind of become relevant to the plot already, but I guess it will take another few episodes before they come back again.

The sense of smell is a dangerous one.
Anyways, good episode as always. The ending was kind of dumb. A burning house full of different chemicals is more likely to create very toxic gas instead of a gas that brings happiness to everyone (the latter actually sounds like a drug)

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

The sperm whale is also known as the common cachalot. Until the late 20th century, the sperm whale was hunted to obtain spermaceti and other products, such as sperm oil and ambergris. Ambergris is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull gray or blackish color produced in the digestive system of and regurgitated or secreted by sperm whales.
Freshly produced ambergris has a marine, fecal odor. However, as it ages, it acquires a sweet, earthy scent commonly likened to the fragrance of rubbing alcohol without the vaporous chemical astringency. The principal historical use of ambergris was as a fixative in perfumery, though it has now been largely displaced by synthetics.

I can't shake off this feeling this anime could be really good if episodic story ended on ep3 or 4, they introduced Flam and Hal in next episode and went for some actual story with all characters being relevant to it. From what i seen even in lv they were introduced in chapter 5.

>The sperm whale is also known as the common cachalot.
Thanks. I wasn't sure if it was vomit or sperm or both.

I keep on feeling that there is a good story hidden somewhere in this series, but somehow Gainax just isn't letting it out. Ignoring how obnoxious Dalian is, the general writing for each episode just doesn't have the edginess that this sort of series deserves. Instead we get hints in some of the flashbacks.

It seems as if the production team feels that the series can get by with "cute" antics from Dalian, and a bit of action from Huey. But the series needs more than that because it is supposed to be story-driven.

The series needs to be adapted by the writers who came up with the ideas for the opening animation and particularly, the ending animation.

If the series continues as it is it will be a disappointment, when it could have been something memorable.

I don't read the manga but I've been wondering since the first episode who is the girl inside the archive, was that Dalian too or somebody else since she said she can't leave? And why does Huey appear like a small child inside the archive anyway?

The preview said The Book of Equivalent Exchange is next, should I expect the Elric brothers to show up too? LOL

Those scenes in the Library are obviously flashbacks to some time when Huey was a kid and wandered in to his Grandfather's library from time-to-time. That girl in the library isn't Dalian - she isn't snarky enough... <L>

Which brings up a bit of nit-picking. Little Huey tells the mystery girl in the Library that she ought to come out so that they can see the world in airplanes. However, let's do a bit of history-checking here:

- Huey was a pilot in WWI - so let's assume that he was flying at age 18 in 1918. This seems reasonable because the show is set in the early 1920s and Huey appears to be in his early 20's.

- Little Huey in the Library appears to be around 6 - 8 years old, which sets him in the library some 10 to 12 years before 1918, or around 1908 to 1906.

- There were no passenger airplanes prior to the First World War, and very few airplanes at all. I would expect that an excited 6 to 8 year old Little Huey would talk about travelling in the "most advanced" travel technologies of pre-WWI - steam engines and steam ships, even if he was aware of airplanes.

Like I said, only a bit of nit-picking...

Well I was assuming they were flashbacks before but those earlier episodes show little Huey always seem to get the exact books he needed to resolve that particular episode's conflict, that's too much of a coincidence and foreshadowing for me. Unless of course, he already read half of the archive when he was young or the girl (I call her "the librarian" for now, XD) can foretell what books he will need in the future. O_o

Then there's the books, the mystical tomes were inside Dalian, right? So if he fell inside her (or whatever gets him to the archive anyway) years before, he must have recognized Dalian when he first met her on the manor, he obviously didn't recall her on the first episode.

Related on the second point which is also on the first episode, he recently just acquired the key after his grandfather passed way and not before, so he didn't have access to archive before.

Again these were just speculations on my part since I don't read the manga and I do not wish to be spoiled if the anime is following adaptation of the manga faithfully.

That was quite the downer ending; everyone dies except Dalian and Huey.

What the shit. How did Fiona know so much about the Phantom Book? She knew about the whole 900,000 and 666 book chant and then she knew that the Book of Healing only works once on a person.

Would've liked a clear chain of events that lead to Fiona dying.

I feel like most of what I've seen in Dentalian episodes I've seen elsewhere, done better.
For example, this episode's conceit of an addictive perfume is better handled in Boogiepop Phantom.
The town of puppets in episode 6 reminded me of Paradox Spiral from Kara no Kyoukai.
