I find that view to be too idealistic. I think the best way to learn a language is to speak and think it, rather than getting it translated all the time (I've been watching anime for a couple of years but still don't know jack about Japanese, except for a few words and phrases here and there). This was the most effective way to make a person understand the true horror of what could happen to children if they were raised by monsters (i.e without 'toning it down' to cater to a particular groups moral point of view)

I disagree that doing something less crude and violent would be 'toning it down' to cater to a particular groups moral point of view. In fact I think that this type of show caters to the tastes of those poeple who are sick-minded enough to enjoy displays of violence, perversion and cruelty but, not being honest enough to admit it, pretend that it is art and that all of it is just necessary to pass a strong message.

This arc was the defining series of episodes for Black Lagoon.

Completely dark, depressing, bittersweet, and amazing overall. This is how BL should have continued on in the season, but unfortunately went downhill from here.

Seriously, man? Get off your high horse. These 3 episodes are incredibly uncomfortable to watch, I'll give you that. But, I don't feel at all that the violence was glorified. The Roberta arc? Yes, that's glorified. That was the point.

I understand that this storyline goes against your morals. It does for me to. But, at the same time I can't miss how well written and thoughtful these episodes, and the series in general is.

And, yes, brutal and violent is exactly how this story should have been told.

I am sorry if I seemed to be condescending but I really wasn't trying to. I was just stating my honest opinion (in an irritated tone, I'll concede).

I disagree with almost everything you just said (I think that some ealrier episodes were well written so we agree on that) but then that is, once again, my opinion and I have already stated my arguments in its favour. So I suppose we should leave it at: we perceive things differently and reason differently and so come to very different conclusions. Don't you agree?

Why did you watch the arc all the way through again? Out of some sick fascination like you accuse others of being? You a masochist, seeing something that disturbs you? I don't understand why someone who would criticize these past eps as being crude and only for the "sick" would keep watching himself. Though I suppose it does allow you to criticize those who love this series, gives yourself a soapbox to look down on us and let us. Whatever. I find your objections silly, while this anime is just that, fake and rather outlandish at that, the real world is certainly just as dark as it makes it out to be. Unless you want to claim that children don't become as messed up as this? Or just that we should pretend that it doesn't happen at all?

I guess it's better for the to die than to live like that.

Argh dammit. It was a good arch, but I don't want Black Lagoon pulling this kind of psychological shit, I watch this for the insane guns-blazing action.

What the hell did that kid show Rock? I made the mistake of watching this ep with a really sadistic friend of mine, so I had to see the "trap" scene somewhere around a million times while she rewinded and fell out laughing.

Balalaika's pretty kickass. X3 At least, she "used to be", or she's just really good at planning.

balalaika DOES kick ass. Hotel moscow DOES kick ass all the time! and the exchange between her and boris was PERFECT!

So...I'm still confused as to whether or not Rock got flashed by a guy or a girl. Either way it's disturbing. If it's the boy then yeah it makes sense that he'd be grossed out by it. But if it was the girl and he was disgusted by it...well then perhaps Rock just let us know a lot more about himself :D

I don't believe Rock was upset because he was flashed.
I think he was upset because the kid might have been propositioning him.......At that point the gender is irrelevant.
That might have been the only way they knew how to show "gratitude."

The last episode of this arc makes it so much better. For once, It forces us to reflect on the lifestyle that these people are leading even when we're watching something just for its entertainment value.

Now the've pissed Hotel Moscow off. There's gonna be hell to pay later I bet.

What is the matter with some of you, Rock wasn't disgusted at seeing male or female genitalia. He was disgusted that a child's reaction to someone being nice was to instantly propose sex, further cementing how far gone these kids were.

The violence wasn't too bad at all, the worst part for me was watching that one dude get his head and face stomped, and smashed against the wall. That was a little much for me.

This episode just made Black Lagoon one of my favorite anime. The ending was as close as the people can get to a realistic "happy" ending. Think about it. If the twins lived on adopted by rock, then sooner or later, they will start killing people. Regardless, this episode was a masterpiece.

It was actually a quite happy ending. This is the mistake that a lot of people make. Although the ending did not end as you want (rock adopting the twins and everyone living happily ever after) the ending was more than good for hansel and gretel. They couldn't have lived happily if they remained alive. a part of their mind would alway have a fragment memory of the perverted things that whatever basterd gave them. Death, therefore, is the only way for them to claim peace.

I disagree that doing something less crude and violent would be 'toning it down' to cater to a particular groups moral point of view. don't mind him, he's like a sick masochist who enjoys tormenting others he himself watches the very same thing.

i don't get it, just drop the show and move on.

for me it was a very powerful episode.

it showed the true realities of the world, and that children CAN be killers.

it also reminded me how dangeorurs Balalaika is O____O

the way the first "boy" got shot by a sniper on the leg and blown of his arm was just sad.

at least Balalaika didn't torture him like he did with his comrades.

but it's gutsy to see him die in front of her crying.

Balalaika got some balls :P

i guess the "girl" made a deal with Eda and recommending Lagoon as her escape route.

she even touch her boosoms up a bit, i though she was a goner :O

agree, though actually at first i thought it was genitalia, but after reading yours and seeing how the conversation and went. i think this is what she's conveying too not the genitalia part(it's just a way to confirm genetically)

and Revy's impression after Rock going outside means she knows what happened XD

so they were imprisoned due to her country wants everyone to work due to financial issues.

and the crazy people taught them their ways, and if they just followed that they'll live to see the next day.

pretty disturbing, but that's just how the world it is.

actually i was hoping Revy and her would talk since "she" manage to tell that Revy is a killer like her.

very surprise Rock wanted to adopt her, but it's too late for her especially how much has happened to both of her brother and herself.

the way she died just like that is wow.

at least she died seeing the sky clear sky, even though as soon as you look down there is blood and vengeance everywhere.

love the episode, soo many themes and message were conveyed. sure it lacks the action like past episodes, but this is freaking good once in awhile.

someone mentioned Gunslinger Girls, in fact i plan on watching it as soon as i finish this series(along with the OVA)

the new ED with both the brother and sister walking off the beach was powerful and sad at the same time.

can't wait for the next episode

Best arc of BL.

I don't know if i feel angry or pity for the twins..... their cold-killer-lifestyle was a kind of protection to their lives.

They are just kids. even with their trauma and cruel past. they are just kids. Rock seems to know that. that's the point when he sensitizes with "her".

I think that dying was a way to end up all this pain and suffering for those twins, although it was sad in the end.

Again.... best arc of the show, this made me increase +1 in the end rate.

While I'm not a cold-hearted person who feels no sympathy for children... Let's be honest, children will eventually turn out to become people like Hitler, Mass Murderers, and criminals who go and rob from the weak for their own gain. If you saw a kid who looked so innocent but knew he/she would be the next hitler or mass murderer, would you still have sympathy over shooting him/her? Perhaps even torturing him/her?
I'm not saying it's okay for any of this happen and to torture children because they might be the next criminal... but I find it somewhat digusting (more so funny) that we find killing and torturing of children inhumane and digusting while war or torture between 30-50 year old veterans or newbies is acceptable and even likeable.
I felt no sympathy for those kids. Everything you do is your responsibility; no one else's. If you were tortured as a kid, you have a choice to do whatever yo wish that experience; to become the best person ever, or everyone's worst nightmare. Quite frankly, just how everyone takes pleasure in torturing criminals in movies... I enjoyed every last second of that twin getting sniped and bleeding out. Honestly, if they are old enough to kill and wield a weapon, they should have enough knowledge to know you can't live forever and one day, you will get hunted.

I suppose I didn't like this episode (and this arc) as much as some of you did, but on the other hand, I suppose it was "good"; just not really my taste.
Or rather, I felt like the arc didn't really fit in Black Lagoon; not because the twins are insane killer-kids, but because of the lolita outfits, the silvery hair and the purple eyes. It would've fitted better in another anime, I think.

And what was actually the role of the Lagoon company in this arc? Sure, they are involved, but not as much as Hotel Moscow for example. I don't mind some variety in the show, but on the other hand, it is called "Black Lagoon" for a reason...

Well, I agree that this was tragic and stuff, but still...letting a psycho like that loose would have been worse. Balalaika was badass in this episode, no wonder nobody wants to mess with her. Only one thing I don't get - why did Black Lagoon take this job? It wouldn't be worth it to piss off the russians just over some brat even if they got paid.

This was, without a doubt, the greatest episode ever...

I think that one was a boy and one was a girl, but they made a pact that they will learn to play both roles, so incase one died, they will still be together in that way. It's really quite beautiful if you ask me.

It was satisfying to watch her die, but it's too bad she didn't suffer like her brother...

I almost thought I would cry with this one, from the title of the episode I knew they were dying but it's not the same as if they were adults or evil, the fact that they were like that because of their childhood is crushing. This as seriously gone on a darker path than the first season.
