Although there are already a couple threads looking for free hosts, I wanted to make one here that compounds them all into one confirmed list.

Below you will find a list of free hosts that support PHP as well as GD2, FreeType, and either cURL or url_fopen (since most of the scripts here have these minimal requirements). I hope to make this list a little more detailed later, but this will have to do for now:

  • freeoda.com
  • freewebhostingarea.com
  • 110mb.com (no FreeType support, so no ttf fonts work -- only imagestring())
  • 000webhost.com (disables php for hours after your first upload to audit for malware, and they have been known to delete accounts with signatures even if they have legitimate websites)
  • byethost.com (began blocking outgoing connections so cannot download rss)
  • freehostia.com (only free if you have your own domain, began blocking outgoing connections so cannot download rss))
  • 0fees.net (same servers as byethost)

My host isn't listed here, can I still use it?
Most hosts that support PHP will work, but some of them have restrictions on outgoing connections for security reasons and will not let you contact MyAnimeList to download your update feed. If you want to verify that your host will work, you can save the following as a text file named curltest.php and upload it to your host:

If you found a free host that works, post here so I can add them~!

huyyy is sharing his paid hosting from justhost..... he told me it had been closed, but w/e. It's still not a good idea to pile everyone in there when free hosting is readily available.

Thanks for the list, I will definitely check them out. 000webhost keeps deleting mine (I guess they don't like that I only have signature files on there).

yeah, I didn't mention that, but you should definitely add something resembling a site (even if you just make it using a template-based generator -- usually they provide one through the control panel). None of the hosts above want you to be using it just as an image host, so at least put in some other stuff.

I've had two domains with 000webhost for more than a year and they haven't deleted either of them even though I've just got crap here and there. I've been audited 2 or 3 times though (after lots of uploading).

edit: they have since removed my account.... jinxed it. I don't recommend using them for this purpose.

removed byethost.com from the list since they no longer allow cURL or url_fopen on their free hosting.

testing for GD (image functions)... works! version: dd..
testing url fopen... failed
testing cURL... failed

verdict: Sorry, this host won't work.

Someone got something like that too? (I'm using 0fees.net)

Byethost is now blocking all outgoing connections, and 0fees.net apparently uses the same servers so both no longer work. I hope they'll reconsider at some point but the list is dwindling.

110mb doesn't support FreeType last time I checked, so fonts may not work.

freehostia is probably the best bet at the moment..... 0fees and byethost use the same servers so I assume there is some kind of partnership/ownership arrangement. I don't expect them to re-enable connections any time soon, since I've seen problems on byethost since 6 months ago or more.

110mb only supports bitmap fonts so you can only use the numbered fonts provided via imagestring() instead of your own custom fonts and imagettftext(). It works, but it's kinda ugly.

So far the registrations for freewha is unavailable and freehostia is not free unless you have your own domain (which most of us don't).

110mb would have been good if only they allowed FreeType support.

"Temporarily Disabled"

....hopefully freewha will return. Guess that the list continues to dwindle, but I'm sure there are other hosts out there.

It's been about year since I've touched my sig so when it suddenly stopped working about a month ago I was really confused. This was the first time I've had trouble with 000webhost so I finally decided to look into it today and I think this topic gave me the answer I was looking for.

I tried using my freehostia account again but I'm getting a message saying it can't download the rss. So, would you happen to know if it's because it's in a similar condition as byethost or if it's because I'm using their "Chocolate" plan?

Seems that the registration on freewha still works, but you have to register at http://www.freewebhostingarea.com/ instead of the shorter freewha.com domain. If you register from the latter it gives a message about automatic registration being "temporarily disabled".

So it's the sole remaining truly free host atm.

@ZeroBreaker: freehostia disabled outgoing connections on all their chocolate/free hosting some months ago. This means you cannot download the rss feed and that essentially kills any chance of these scripts working.

The registrations work, but for some reason it keeps telling me to enable cookies when it's already enabled. Is anyone else having problems registering from http://www.freewebhostingarea.com?

doesn't seem to be working for me either anymore lol..... they might restrict registration attempts with a cookie.

edit: yep... try from another browser or clear cookies and it works again.

It looks more like you did something odd with your script and just broke it... though it is hosted on 000webhost so most likely they'll remove it at some point (unless you pay them but you can find better hosts for that price). Most of the free hosts that I know about have closed their doors to scripts that download from other sites, but you can find ways around it.

For example, I have written a php script that runs locally on my own local wamp server at localhost.... and the script uploads the result via sftp to an online host (which does not require the host to even run php, so I can just use any free host). That's one alternative, if you don't have your own decent hosting.

freewebhosting area will delete your account unless you have a proper site hosted on it.

Only one I've yet to try is 100mb, but I got myself paid hosting so I won't bother.

If I only put a index.html page (where all you see is like, a black background with the site name on it) would that count as a "proper site" or does it have to be a "real" site (like MAL, where there are links you can click on) ?

They have actual people visit the site, so I doubt that. I recommend using the site building tools they provide in the panel. They are easy to use and you might actually make a home page you want to use.
