Mine is a tie between the first one and the last one - 1 and 3, but probably 1. I loved 1. The whole story was awesome and I love when characters in your game get together before the game is actually over and then they fight for their love during the game, that's awesome.

But 3, I really loved, too. It had an awesome storyline and I loved seeing Iris all grown up. Edge was hot as well and I really liked Nell and her sister, too. The fighting was also extremely fun and the classes were sexy - I LOVED the classes.

My favorite is definitely the 1st one! To me, I think it was the one game that contained the most comedy and also the best music. I loved all those crazy shop scenes with Veola and Blair. XD

Yes!!! I miss having such an awesome, classic game, ah. It was a nice refreshing game, but they all are.

I still think Eternal Mana is the best one although I really do like them all and they all have things that make them great.

I think that of the prior to Atelier Iris series games, that I have not played, Atelier Viorate would be my favorite.
My top three favorite female characters of the Atelier series are Viorate Platane, Pamela Ibis and Eisel Weimar.
And all three of them appear in Atelier Viorate. ^_^

I would probably have liked AI: EM best if it hadn't got random battles, because the shop scenes with Veola were made of awesome. Azoth of Destiny was a bit of a let-down, except for the soundtrack, which was goddamn awesome. In other words, I like Grand Phantasm best, because of it's lack of random battles, the stellar music and the somewhat addictive - though repetitive - gameplay. I own Atelier Lilie as well, but I'll wait until I know some more Japanese before playing it. :P

ai1 for the nostalgia and personal replay value. i loved the completely interactive environment, actually being able to see the items instead of a brown bag, and the excellent NPC relationships.

i used to feel sour about ai2, but i was comparing it to ai1 in many aspects. there was hardly any work done to make the game feel like an actual world when going into each area. the world map was one of the most beautiful ones i have seen, though. when putting ai2 outside of the atelier series it is a fantastic game. it took a replay for me to realize how powerful the plotline was and the improvement with character development. i also really enjoyed the letter system and the music. the villain was portrayed in a way that isn't often done. a lot of emotions with that game.

ai3 is okay, it has some replay value. it has wonderful graphics and sound, but despite the claim of "going back to atelier's roots" it didn't feel that way at all. at first the fetch quests were fun, but going to the same 5-or-so places got a little boring. the plot was good but should have been enhanced a little more.

my overall favorite is ai1, but it's almost a tie with ai2

Definitely Iris 3. The battle system was just fantastic and carried over to the Mana Kheima series.

If only the atelier iris games count, I would say 2, because of it's length, and the fact that the battle system was amazing at the time.
But if all Atelier games count, I personally recommend Totori, geniously good background music, and a battle system that blows your mind, followed up with Meruru for a good new assist system and cool character design,
