Anyone taking a Japanese curriculum that incorporates (or even goes as far as emphasizes) the use of romanized words in class should reconsider.

I honestly have a hard time reading through horrible romaji, but I don't have much of a problem speeding through kana and recognizing kanji.

I'm aware that a lot of beginner classes use romaji to ease the transition from English to Japanese. However, unless you're an elementary school student, this isn't really necessary. You should be able to learn new words and phrases using hiragana and katakana effortlessly (and of course, eventually, kanji).

There's no real reason to ever become proficient in romaji unless the backbone of your "Japanese language experience" consists of poorly subbed and mistranslated anime.
