Since losing my VN virginity, reading the originals became an option to me, especially since people complain about VN adaptations.
I've been wanting to watch Yosuga no Sora, but thought "But what if the VN is better?".
Same went for every VN adaptation I saw listed on MAL (To Heart, ComiPa, KimiNozo, etc)

Is there a consensus for which are worthwhile and which are not?

There is some consensus regarding which have good adaptations, but I don't think anyone can agree on whether those good adaptations surpass the originals. Kanon is one that people seem to have stopped playing after the 2006 anime aired.

I usually watch anime when possible and play those games that don't have adaptations.

Well not all people will play VN like myself since is boring clicking a button and nothing happening, they rather play will game instead (unless the VN has simulator like management or life rpg that will have a audience)

There are some VN adaptation worth watching cause the main factor I look up is the VA playing the role on an old games and linear story telling like:

Ace Attorney - Yes I know i'm losing a lot of the charm (like find the clue for the investigation) from the game but its falls the same linear story and the performance of the VA

Rance 01 - This Ero VN has an animated version and its much better than the remaster of this game and every CG has no VA and every transition you click, you'll here some background music and slop water sex sound effect

VNs are always better than anime no matter what even if anime adaptations are great. I would ever recommend to watch anime over reading VN. Clannad anime is great and I didn't read VN since it's huge (biggest ever I assume) but I still plan to read it after I'll read some grim VNs which are shorter.

Those adaptations really bringing the story to life in such ways that can sometimes outshine the originals.
Only Those adaptations take the source materials and elevate them with stellar animation, add voice acting.
